Nah, most of them(and a huge chunk of portraits from other RPGs at that time, too) had a deformed, inbred look. They look like a badly generated AI image. Still a good game, though.

They had to replace a lot of these portraits with shittier ones in a patch because the artist traced real celebrities for them and the devs got in trouble for it. It was an unpleasant surprise when I booted it up after installing one of the expansions and all the best portraits were gone.
Why would it be a problem when none of them are recognizable as a celebrity?

Arcanum's are pretty good, they are based on real life 19th century pictures.
Half orcs (at least the first portrait) are based on 1800s anti-irish caricatures.
All portraits are based on war heroes and politicians of the age. Great idea and execution

What rpgs let me switch out character portraits for actual photos (Icewind Dale, Baldurs Gate, Pathfinder, Wasteland style portraits)? It's my favorite feature, and I can feel myself getting very immersed because of it
Maybe in the (near) future, so far ai generated stuff still usually has some telltale signs of being ai. Like the body/face proportions and features being slightly off, a certain "smoothness" permeating the image etc.
Let's see in the future.

I'd personally describe them as varying from "tolerable" to "really bad". Also, I was about to swear up and down that bottom right wasn't in the game and you must've installed a custom portrait pack mod, but I just figured up the game to check, and I'll be damned, I was wrong. They're people who want to wear all the most superficial trappings of some alternate/subculture to seem "cool", or rather to have any identity beyond just consuming, the irony here is obvious. It's the same as someone who's barely played any sport, like say basketball, but wears full and1 outfits out in public. Or "is into mma" and wears some gaudy mma-merch everywhere. I literally know a person who did both in the span of two years and I'm sure you know people like these as well.
They almost never have a true passion/love/nerd obession to the thing they're desperately claiming as their identity, but they'll make sure everyone in a 100 mile radius knows they're "into it". And they're usually extremely insecure about their actual profiency in the thing since they don't actually care that much about the thing itself. The millenial(?) term for this is probably "poser".
I mean, god forbid someone liked games for, you know, gameplay. If someone just wanted to see the story they could just check a wiki or youtube.

They really are good. Everything about each of them exudes a sense of fantasy myth a wonder. The backgrounds also contribute a lot. There's something about them that really make them seem like portraits of real people living somewhere out there.

Man I wish IWD would be so mediocre because I like the setting and it's tone but it's such a endless chore to play through.
With mods, especially difficulty mods it's more interesting. I've played through it two and a half times in the last two years. It's also a strong contender for the best audio design in a crpg, or more specificially the ambients, soundtrack and most of the VA is top notch.
It was the half-elf in the middle with the braids, for me.
Always liked the gal in the strappy gown.
Again, IWD2 was the infinity engine game that needed the most love tbh.

It should be noted that what passes for commercialized "nerd culture" and what nerds really are are two very different things. You can be nerdy about lifting weights, optimal diet and rest, cars, computers, fricking anime, movies, books etc. It's not really even a culture, just a way of approaching things.
