There are a few tracks from SWSH and SV I like a lot but a whole lot of meh. Mainly due to me thinking Minako Adachi’s orchestral themes is bland and not caring about GF’s Toby Fox wanking. I like Undertale and Deltarune’s music but his guest compositions feel whatever, like he’s saving his best stuff for his own games. Ichinose and Sato redeem a lot of the osts as a whole

I hated sv's leitmotif using. Those people DO NOT know how leitmotifs work. Literally almost every song seemed to have that one melody fox wrote. I think even the final battle theme has it but it's used very very badly.
I felt legends Arceus had some pretty good world music. I was disappointed there wasn't more battle themes however. Overall I think legends Arceus had good music

they should have just asked Toby to create the entire soundtrack, not like he singlehandedly made one of the most iconic game soundtracks ever or something

Toby doesn't make good music outside his games. Not that Undertale's music is specially good outside a couple of themes.

It's catchy and iconic, but not great. He abuses repeating the same short sequence over and over and over and recycles too much (leitmotifs don't work that way: there must be a connection between the themes. For example, I can't use the same motif in the "going to sleep" inn jingle and in the fire dungeon battle theme but now in lower key because it doesn't make sense, those things are not related).

Not to say that Undertale's music borders on plagiarism. Of course, Toby didn't know that it would be such a hit and probably though nobody would notice, but when it became so sucessful, many people started drawing the uncanny similarities with other game's ost

I really liked the way he used the Waterfall leitmotif in both of Undyne's battle themes though. That was really really good, and the connection was there as Waterfall is where you learn the history of the monsters and what their motivations are iirc. Plus, yanno, Undine and water in general, and her tracking you throughout that area. It all plays into it.

Pity talking about Undertale online was always pretty much impossible. It did some things well.

you might be thinking about it too hard. i personally don't think every song that uses a leitmotif needs to be directly connected. there are songs that use leitmotifs and ARE directly connected thematically in Undertale anyways so to me that doesn't seem like that big a deal
            >Toby doesn't make good music outside his games.
that's why they should have given him full control, certainly couldn't be worse than

            Like wtf is this shit:

Gen II, IV and V had the best music, gen VI was pretty meh and a big step down from V. VII was better, but VIII and IX really shat the bed except a couple of themes

tbf Toby fricks up leitmotifs too, like when he gave Muffet a remix of Ghost Fight/Dummy despite her not being a ghost

I like how Death by Glamour combined all of Mettaton's associated themes, like Metal Crusher and that Breaking News one.

The only reason it's iconic because is a meme/joke
It's disco music for people that never want to disco
Which is not a thing tpc and other major company wants

To be fair, Disco music is catchy and removing the cringe culture, dancing and fashion that surrounded it only makes the tunes easier to appreciate

iirc even Toby was surprised that they used his South Province and Academy themes as leitmotifs. They're decent melodies but not leitmotif worthy. But yeah I wasn't a fan of the use of leitmotifs in SWSH and here. Alola reuses the Alola theme a lot but there was still a lot of variety. And imo the best use of leitmotif is if you can't even notice it's the same melody unless you're listening closely.

I recall some Gen 7 music being pretty good. Gen 8 was hit and miss for me, but it definitely had a few great tracks. Haven't heard much from Gen 9 but the Area Zero track I checked out was pretty good.

Pokemon music is just hit and miss really. Some gens have more hits, others more misses, but I'd have to go through them one by one.

My favorite Gen 8 track was one of the Wild Area ones. It's really good. Wish more of it were like this honestly

Their MIDI instrumentation is SHIT. It sounds like it's played under a pillow.

No, SV OST is solid. SwSh was decent enough. PLA is also decent. BDSP's remaster isn't too bad, although ORAS turned out better.

The problem isn't that it's gotten worse, it's that it hasn't gotten better either. So ever since I was introduced to genuinely amazing video game music pokemon just feels worse by comparison.

Thank God you didn't say III. I'll never understand people who put RSE music up on a pedestal, it had a few good tracks but a lot of them were goddamn intolerable. Worst instrumentation in the series.

It did when they moved Go Ichinose to a technically higher position but one with less involvement in the actual composition. That happened in gen 8.

This might be hard to hear, but the newer soundtracks get hyped up by people who literally only play mainline Pokemon. Pokemon spinoffs and most other tendie franchises have consistently better music.

any kind of top video game soundtracks of all time will be barren from pokemon games with maybe one of gen 1-2 stuck at bottom. their popularity is reserved for nostalgia in youtube comment sections or for people like you to try to and start genwars

No. I think that area and city music might've become a bit worse, but that seems on purpose because it makes the actual good tracks in important moments of the game stick out so much more and have a greater impact.

Yes. I wouldn't hate SWSH and SV as much I do if it wasn't for how bad the soundtrack was.
    I can deal with dexit.
I can somewhat deal with the constant downgrade and removal of features that leaves the games with nothing else to do but catching Pokémon, subpar battles, even more subpar story, and paywalled online multiplayer.
I cannot deal with a soundtrack that gives me headaches while listening to it.
    >But there's volume adjusters now, you can still play the game with only the music muted
I'm glad it's there, but that shouldn't have to be mandatory to play a game.
