Um, no? that game just wasn't good. Lots of good retro inspired FPS games are still being released.

      >retro inspired
Isn't that a bit redundant? Retro quite literally means something resembling old thing. Is like inception. What if we take this pixel shit retro game that just came out, but then we make game that is inspired that! We shall call it... retro inspired!

Slipgate making another shitty game is not the canary in the coal mine for the FPS renaissance.
It's starting to become an oversaturated market, sure, but it just means that good stuff will just have to be more interesting than just reskinned Doom/Quake 1.

Half Life was always overrated cinematic trash. The previous game worked because it aped DN3D, an actual good FPS.

Not by a long shot, we are finally entering the era where indie games stop emulating Doom and Quake, trying to go as fast as humanly possible, and trying to make Half-Likes with focus on pacing, atmosphere, set pieces, puzzles and satisfying combat without breaking the flow with cutscenes. Phantom Fury is halfway there, stumbling when it comes to puzzles, storytelling and combat: Story has fricking dialogue trees, puzzles are often not communicated well enough or told where to go and the combat is meh because the enemies are either stock dumb or hitboxes are incredibly wonky.

But by all means, I bought it because I want them to keep trying.

How long until we get to CoD4 and the cycle repeats?

CoD2 and 4 signalled the dark ages of the FPS genre though.

Start experimenting with mechanics instead of just aping shit from 2 decades ago

Possibly. But that game is just garbage. I do think Steam is completely oversaturated with these indie "boomer shooters" nowadays, especially since they all just bafflingly rot in early access for 5+ years, but some still manage to be decent. Probably time for the industry to do something else though, most are medicore and the nostalgia has worn off.

early access is the problem with this genre and most indies
it gives these gays an excuse to hide behind the label and collect revenue even though the product is incomplete

I feel like if steam had an unlimited refund window for early access games it would deter a lot of the early access shit taking so long and just being plopped out as a half-assed 1.0 since the devs have collected all the revenue in the EA period anyway.

      It's alright.

      >paint-by-numbers cosmic horror story but I'll be honest it was one of my favorite elements of Quake 1 so I don't think that's a negative
      >good art
      >amateur level design
      >some enemies are just way more durable than they should be but don't do anything besides rush at the player so it just turns some encounters into slamming your most powerful guns into them for a few seconds

I had fun with it and am hoping the sequel has some marked improvements.

Graven and Phantom Fury were rushed out the door after mass layoffs. These games aren't finished. Wrath: Aeon of Ruin would have suffered the same fate if it wasn't 90% finished before everyone got fired.

I had fun with and really enjoyed Nightmare Reaper but it did somewhat outstay its welcome towards the last 10-15% of the game.
