Why stop now when you can always double down and hope for the best! More crossovers! More "premium" products! The obvious reason why there was a slump in sales is because people didn't have MORE products to buy!

what you morons never seem to realize is this is their sales strategy and has been for years now.
they WANT to ruin the company. running a company into the ground and milking every last drop of profit is far more lucrative in the short-term than the long con of putting effort and time into your brand.

      Anonymous

Yeah, and the worst part is that the people doing this shit will exit the company with a fat bonus and leave the mess for some other poor schmuck to try and squeeze more money out of it. Rinse and repeat until the company is dead.

CEOS literally do not give a frick if their company fails. Companies only hire CEOS based on job history and if they have a choice between
      >genuinely constructive and successful man
      >person who has """experience""" being a CEO
then they're going to pick from the same well that they always have. There are no consequence for being a bad CEO you can only fail upwards.

Hypothetical question: what do you think would happen to MtG if Hasbro+WotC went totally bankrupt, shut down forever? It's partially a legal question since the copyrights/intellectual properties would probably be liquidated to pay off debts or something and I have no idea how any of that works.

But just suppose that the "business" of Magic: The Gathering becomes dead forever, somehow. Would players start creating new sets in some organized "semiofficial" capacity, you think?

        Anonymous

We’d probably see a bunch of MtG clones appear after a few years
People would still play unofficial tournaments and there are enough cards to keep LGS afloat for a good 2-5 years.
But the meta and bans would be defined at a local level and eventual the cards would be used just for the art.

But way more likely another company like Asmodee picks it up and runs it into the ground again. And that happens until the brand is worthless and no one is buying, then it’s put in the IP vault.

It'd be up to Hasbro/WotC to decide how to sell those right, right? As in, one company could buy Transformers, one could buy Monopoly, one could buy MtG, etc etc... or does everything the company have need to be bought in one big package?

Isn't the Wizards MtG side of things only slightly underperforming, and it's the TV and Film side of things that Hasbro's losing the real money on? Like, everything is being mishandled by them right now for sure, but the dumpsterfire that is Magic the Gathering is much smaller and controlled than the ragining inferno that is Hasbro's mass media side of things.

I think so. I remember seeing some numbers like 7% for WotC and 14% for the rest of Hasbro. But I don't have any context for what those mean exactly- 7% of WotC could still be larger than 14% of the rest of Hasbro since WotC was raking in more cash in absolute terms.

It's actually up to the liquidator.

If the company thinks they get more bundling it, they bundle it.
Usually when that happens bidders, who definitely haven't negotiated with each other before hand, refuse to bid, forcing the company to split the products and then the bidders all buy what they want with minimal competition from each other.

        >Would players start creating new sets in some organized "semiofficial" capacity
People have already been making custom cards and sets for over a decade (see CCG channel for plenty of sets). If MtG suddenly died there are plenty of people willing to take a crack at it.
As for the organized part, the people making proxies already count. Imagine if they could suddenly make money this way legally. (Whether or not that would be good for the game is a different discussion).

Yes. The worse it gets, the funnier it is to me. I hope it devolves into complete shlock like Shrek and Dracula vs Spiderman fighting over Ravnica.

        >Shrek and Dracula vs Spiderman
We just need to see an Into The Spiderverse crossover and the floodgates will open even further.

I got into MTG with the D&D Sets, but started playing when Phyrexia was released last year. Went to Friday Night Magic every other week and it was fun, but the pace at which new sets are being released including the power creep in that short time, turned me away from playing. I'm not buying any new sets anymore. I'll just keep playing the same commander and standard sets I have with friends that do the same.

Could always get OCTGN or wieneratrice and play for free online too if you want to keep up w/the meta.

The problem is with managers and directors is they think there is still room and ressources left. Since it is so popular and old the paypigs will always be there and always buy stuff.

I think Hasbro believes in a future global recession and they want to get peopke's disposible income while they still can. Then, when the last few idiots realize MTG is a shitty funkopop game full of stale overmonitized 80's toy brands, it won't matter that they don't have money anymore and they can align their rescue of the game's image with a recovering economy.

Or maybe I'm giving them too much credit. Even if thats whats going on, I doubt the plan will work.

Buying and selling stocks should be illegal. If stock market didn't exist, none of this would have ever happened. Only way to gain control of a company should be inheriting it from your dying father, as he inherited it before you. No buying or selling allowed, ever.

Just make it so the only shareholders who are allowed to vote on a company's board of directors are the ones who bought their stock directly from the company (ie the actual investors). Anybody else can collect dividends and such but gets zero input of any kind into how the company is run.

There's a lot of shit that should be illegal

The bad thing is that stocks really do help small companies.
The problem is that managing stocks is now a business in and of itself, when stocks should be a way for people to invest in projects and companies that they believe in
Also that Supreme Court decision that said increasing the pay for your employees without simultaneously increasing dividends for your shareholders is illegal needs to get overturned.
Also everyone involved in the push during the 70s that said "The real way to make money isn't a good product, but to grind your employees into dust and pay yourself more" needs to have their families killed for their crimes.

I agree. I have the opinion, inflation is caused because of stocks. (And loans)
Because investors expect the company to grow and give them dividends. So the company needs to create wealth and generate money making it more expensive each time.

Honestly it's hard not to think of social engineering when you see how insistent the entertainment industry is on showing you a black man with a white woman. It's just so on the nose it feels like a psyop. I saw a music video the other day and there were 20 dancers around the singer who's petite, pale and blonde. Who picks up the girl and spins her around? The one Black person, of course! How can you not think it's a psyop?

          Anonymous

I'm not sure if psyop is quite the term, but you're right. It absolutely is social engineering, zero speculation needed. You can get it from the horse's mouth if you want, they have proudly stated their intentions and methods for decades. They want you and your culture destroyed. People don't see it because they're a boiling frog. Our people used to hold virtues in common that today are long forgotten; things as simple as "junk food" or "the boob tube." Now it's acceptable and encouraged to be a prostitute rather than be married with children. The change came swiftly but no one remembers the world before. We will see terrible things in our lives.

religion is kind of dead. people need something new to believe in to make them feel like good people. Currently that syndrome is pity for minorities and angst against previous established morals like religion and family. The other option is to make money your new God and the other half of people are doing that. It will all be passe at some point.

So you admit mtg drones don't care about the flavor or art, and will buy anything that has overpowered cards in it. Sounds like printing busted UB sets is the way to go then. Normies will buy for IPs, addicts will buy for power level. Win-win.

      The One Ring is busted
      what’s the other one? bowmasters?

        Anonymous

Bowmasters has unseated Dark Confidant as the best black 2-drop creature. The land cyclers (Lorien Revealed especially) are also really strong. Delighted Halfling is probably another "busted" card because of how many legends there are now that having 2 toughness and uncounterable is better than Noble Hierarch in a lot of decks.

That's about it, though. I think the land cyclers are all good designs and do something new. It's not like a 5 mana draw 3 made anything obsolete. The impact TOR and Bowmasters had is bullshit, though. TOR is like Time Warp with Ancestral Recall attached to it. I'm dumbfounded as to how Bowmasters made it out of R&D. I guess I shouldn't be surprised since the printings of Murktide Regent, Ragavan, and Minsc & Boo.
