It's kind of funny how they chose the most generic sword and sorcery cover art for this game when the game is meant to be more historical and ingame armor looks nothing like that fantasy stuff
Yeah. I don't mind the cover but it doesn't represent the game well. The fantasy elements give an important flair, though.
He has flirted with the idea of a spiritual successor to it.
Is battle brothers even remotely similiar?
I haven't played Battle Brothers but the cynic in me says probably not since I've never seen another game quite like Darklands in all my years.
Might still give Battle Brothers a go, though.
I really don't know if comparing BB to Darklands is appropriate, but BB itself is a mixed bag.
It has a steep learning curve, mostly so you know which gear, stats and traits are good at which parts of the game and how to even approach different enemies. And you get punished *heavily* for mistakes and sometimes rnjesus just fricks you over and half of your company ends up dead.
On the other hand having a good run going on feels great if you get through some struggless and get a feeling for navigating the lands, slowly building up your bros.
Shit like that is usually down to publisher frickery. >no the game won't sell if you make the cover look too realistic, the kids are into D&D so if you want to sell an RPG you need to make it look like a Dragonlance ripoff!
It's not that generic, seeing as there's literally no dragons, giants, minotaurs, or demons on the cover. It's actually quite conservative and portrays zero fantasy-like qualities.

The fine distinction is that darklands is the fantasy world that some or many people of the real era might have believed they were living in. That's what makes it "historical"
The day to day life they were familiar with is depicted in down to earth medievalist ways, the unseen world they believed was at the edge of that with demons, demon worshippers, direct physical intervention of the saints, mystical alchemy, is where it becomes fantastical

This.
Based.
The setting is so much more than 'just 1500's Germany'.
Well, you have to remember that back in '92 there would have been about 10 people max working on this game and the VG market wasn't as 'refined' back then, the publisher would have just commissioned some striking fantasy art that would be sufficient to portray a feeling of 'dark fantasy', there was very much a disconnect between the box art and its contents in the 80s and early 90s
>darklands isn't really historical
Oh? Let’s see your arguments. >you throw potions
Okay, I’ll be charitable and give you this one. >saints have powers and demons exist
Where’s the lie? This is the world we live in. Haven’t you been paying attention?
saints are just people canonized by people, often for spurious reasons, their bones don't do shit except attract pilgrims to milk, devotion to them has no power. demons in reality are men who fail to transcend themselves and get mired in the material. do you actually think hell is a place and not a state of being? alchemy was a method of spiritual attainment, not mere potion brewing or transmutation. the game is made by the type of modern man that is consumed with material explanations and takes people of the past for fools.
I mean, It is historical because It is set in a real medieval kingdom during the 15th century.
But its historical fantasy because of what you cited.
Think about It in another way, though, people at the time truly believes dragons lived in Ásia, demons could be materialized through Magic etc.etc.
Heck, I believe in demons today. So its clearly fitting for the time period
>people at the time truly believes dragons lived in Ásia, demons could be materialized through Magic etc.etc
morons of all time periods believe in fantasies, just look at how popular egalitarianism is now, but the proportion and depth is unknown as people offer lip service and those who are looking back tend to want to believe nowadays that we've progressed, and generally have no head for allegory.
This is not a political statement Freak, um just saying that what the game depicts in perfectly fine for historical fantasy.
all fantasy is derived from pagan religions, also egalitarianism is real
the right-wing stuff is completely fake. even demons are fake, it's just people blaming their bad outcomes on something that isn't real.
>even demons are fake

Nonetheless, It doesnt make of It any less of a good depiction of the period in the sense of a historical fantasy, as is with cavalry novels and such.
What is a good example of historical fantasy, or historical RPGs in general, for you?

i have no particular interest in historical fantasy, it's an oxymoron. "historical" is like "based on true story", it's really about marketing.

The world has always been bad.
I’ve not really found anything that is similar.
It has that old school Microprose colossal manual that is packed with details and an obsessive amount of detail in certain an areas like the saints.
The issue though is that all this interesting stuff is packed in to a game that fundamentally is really not that as much fun as it should be. It’s clunky, especially in combat.
Still enjoyable but it has problems.

You should add Maria Pita to it.

Frick. I'm all in for medieval fantasy stuff that's not tranime or pixelslop. "Historical" games like kingdom come are boring
darklands isn't really historical. you throw potions and saints have powers and demons exist. most people who talk about it haven't played it.

egalitarianism is delusion spawned from religious dogma and pushed by people who want to create factories which churn out slaves.

josh sawyer is into it so idk about main inspiration but it was probably an influence on the games he directed
He has flirted with the idea of a spiritual successor to it.

nope, the reason being that it isn't a very well made game
True, the setting is Kino however.
Germany is not kino.
>plenty
No.
Serpent in the Staglands, kind of.
Its really not at all beyond the sprite style, which was not why anyone liked darklands
Yeah plenty, but they arent 1:1 carbon copies so it's not what you want even though you probably played this for an hour and dropped it anyways.
