Have video games completely stagnated?

And I don't mean that in a doomposting way, it's hard to explain but it just kinda feels like everything that could've made has already been made, now everything is just slightly different from the last game
If it's graphics everything is already in its peak basically, regardless if it's photorealism or more cartoonish it's always the same
If it's gameplay you always know what to expect, even if a game has its own quirks in the end it's just gonna end up being slightly different from other games in the same genre
I started thinking this while playing Persona 5 earlier and comparing its graphics with 4, there is a huge difference between the two but the next games won't look any different from 5 simply because there is nowhere else to go

Bro we live in a point in time when remasters are unironically popular
If that isn’t enough to tell you games are absolutely stagnate like a swamp then perhaps consider the fact most games coming out today are just a rehash of something another developer already did except worse

      >we live in a point in time when remasters are unironically popular
Basically all you need to say, for the past 3 or so years, half of the biggest VG announcements have just been remastered games that came out 15 or 20 years ago. We have hit the wall of creativity and ability for triple A devs, because they realized its way easier to do the bare minimum and then just rinse a few idiots for the next couple months or years, get the money and get out. Why would blizzard care if Overwatch 2 is the laughing stock of gaming, when they still have thousands and thousands of morons buying their 25 dollar skins and getting the battlepass every month, when they have millions of people ready to shovel the slop that was D3 back into their faces but with even more predatory monetization. Indie and AA games are the place to find real innovation and experimentation these days

This is kind of nice because all these Zoomers start going "Why didn't anyone tell me this old game was so great?" because old games literally ARE better than the trash they've been playing.

No, they've been hindered by women. Seems like the only thing women do in studios is hold men back. Like, you can't make a female character without a woman's approval.

Fricking idiot, women were in dev teams in JAPANESE games back in the late 90s.

It's true. All the low hanging fruit for making realistic graphics has been picked. Games have such huge budgets now and they're only getting those budgets if they promise to play things extremely safely so that the investors won't throw tantrums.

most genres and gameplay styles have been "figured out" as far as the current medium permits so we're at the phase where they get refined and expanded on, just follow projects doing things you like, we're in a great spot right now it's just not as exciting looking as the industry's infancy

I wonder if the new Apple whatever is what it's goign to take for VR to really take off. After spending some time with my brother's VR set this past week I'm pretty convinced that there's a ton of great potential in the VR space, and the games I played felt futuristic in a way I hadn't felt with games in a good while

It's still basically the same as normal VR. It's not some Sword Art Online kind of shit.

Yes, they have. We're at the point where remakes/remasters are MORE profitable than making something new.

Everything that is new has to go through "the checkboxes" to make sure it will garner at least X amount of audience attention. Graphical fidelity was always low-hanging fruit because all you had to do to improve it was throw more power on the problem and it happened to make for really good normalgay-bait.

I think it's a societal problem. The nature of escapism has changed. In the 80s, 90s and to a lesser extent 00s video games were meant to take you to a new world, or into a new role, or let you do something that you'd otherwise never experience. It was all about getting AWAY from reality. Even in very realistic games like sportshit or simulators the goal was always to be immersed in being someone/something else for a while.

The state of modern escapism is not so much about getting away as it is about getting BACK to 80s, 90s and early 00s version of escapism. We're escaping into the past and bathing nostalgia instead of escaping to new worlds and building new fun video game memories.

    It's sad shit.

if you want an example of what modern escapism is like, look up any generic isekai in the last 5 years. its all masturbatory and shallow and without conflict.

My favorite thing about this is how if I look up said isekai on a site like tv tropes I promise it will be more exhaustively catalogued and detailed than some of the greatest and most renowned works of human history.

I've never had a good experience with a single isekai. It's such a unique setting that has the possibility to ask some really fun questions:
        >is this reality better than the old one and if so why
        >do I fit in better here than I do back home, and if so what does that say about me
        >if I am happy here, is that real happiness, or am I just happy because of an artificial circumstance set up "for me"
        >are there values here that should be replace by those back home, or should some of the values here be bought back with me
        >why would I even bother trying to "get home" if I am objectively happier here, does it even matter how I got here
There are so many fun topics isekai could go into that they just don't and it always bothers me.

You’re thinking of an actual story, written by someone who gives a shit. That’s not what these things are. It’s pure drivel, wish fulfillment harem nonsense masquerading as something with a little bit more depth to it, aka genuine goyslop, which is why it’s so funny to see weebs so often toss that word around.

there are some good ones, but the count is woefully low considering the bulk of isekais plaguing the market. id recommend faraway paladin manga, but avoid the anime. you can tell the author was a tales-of gay after a certain character gets introduced and right now we are going through tolkien arc and unironically is doing a better job at it so far than current tolkien media.

We're criticising isekai now? That's like attacking fanfiction. It was never even trying to be high level. The better question is why are you watching it

          Anonymous

well, considering Forspoken was an isekai, and like most isekais it was a concept with good potential underutilized by its creators, i think its a valid related arguement.

People complained about the two most recognizable and popular FF protagonists? I don't believe you. I like Tidus, btw, I just wonder what the tuck happened between the Squall/Cloud designs and Tidus. Then came goofy ass Sora with his big ass shoes and red onesie.

His character was never brought into question, his design was. Not that Tidus is alone here, plenty of FFX characters are completely overdesigned to an absurd degree.

Perhaps the cocaine explains how they managed to completely lose the source code for multiple projects. Not like anyone would ever need that for any reason.

    Nah. We're just older.
It's like when you saw your parents (and before them, grandparents) do the "they don't do X like they used to" and talk about how their old way is better.
It's the same thing here, except were more focused on video games. Even the stuff you loved as a kid was built on stuff someone else did, but you didn't notice because it was still "new" to you.

why make these threads if you arent looking for evidence to the contrary? video games are shit because you only play shit and you only ever played shit. shit has stagnated. (You) have stagnated. that's why you keep making the same shitty threads everyday.

No, they're regressing. Look at something from ~2014-2016 and compare it to something from the past year or so. We went from having a nice clean image with material shaders that popped to muddy, cloudy images with very dull shaders.
