You get both regardless. The difference between the two is a handful of other party members are different depending on who you pick. Rena is generally considered the better pick because she can recruit Dias, who is one of the best party members in the game. Clause gets Noel, who is a spellcaster, and spellcasters are kinda shit in the original.
Rena and claude also has vastly different sidequests from each other.
I remember the story elements being slightly different like not knowing what's happening with Clause in space as Rena because Rena isn't there, but I don't remember too much about the sidequests. Its been like a decade since I played the game so I'll take your word for it.

I don't really care for combat being sprite based, I know it's 3D but it's 3D real time combat with fricking sprites and not 3D models, it would have been neat to get 3D models IN COMBAT and sprites outside of combat, but that's too much work I guess for them to implement.
Thinking about it, it honestly probably wouldn't be. They have all the models from their mobage sitting there. But maybe the swap between the two would have felt too weird in practice. I'm gonna rewatch the trailer a few times to see if I can glean anything else about the combat but I find it quite funny that there's now three different versions of SO2 and all of them have significant differences to their gameplay and more.
Nah, the games are loosely connected via references due to taking place in the same universe and having some character connections but tell largely separate stories. SO2 is the best entry point for the series.
That would be pretty great, and seeing that Voice Type option does give a lot of hope for that. I might be mixing this up a bit but the funny thing about the VAs is that from what I remember they actually had some of the original PS1 VAs working on the PSP version, except they voiced different characters.

It could have been handled a little better, especially since the comparison pic shows they weren't even trying to recreate the original place, but it looks decent enough and the art is really nice. I couldn't tell from the trailer but I'm curious if they've got yet another set of VAs to do the lines because that'd be quite funny. I'm particularly curious about the actual gameplay changes, the assist thing is genius for a game like this but I didn't see much about the chain thing. At least it looked like there's a lot of settings to have original things like the old OST which should be a staple in any and all remakes.

Also while that interview was in 2019, I believe the meeting in question where it was shot down was even before that and before Xenoblade2 came out when interest was a lot lower.

Bros, I'm so excited. SO2 is one of my all time favorite games. When the remake got leaked I feared the worst, but this looks like it's actually going to be faithful to the original. I'm not totally sold on the way some of the environments look, but overall it looks great. I literally had a dream about SO2 last night and woke up telling myself I should play through the game again.

I feel bad for you, I honestly think that HD2D is the ugliest modern art style and I hate the frick out of it. Ever since square revealed that shit with octopath 1 I refuse to play any game in the style. My favorite part about pixel art is the environments and background art.
nah, I agree it makes me diamonds too but the best is and always will be pre-rendered.
Back in the PS1 days I always wished to see the future bringing even better backgrounds for amazing scenery and I got a bit of that thanks to stuff like FFX. But then everyone in the game industry seemingly made a big reunion and decided to all collectively kill it like Caesar's assassination.
Do whatever you need to do with character sprites, go ahead and do your thing. But pre-rendered backgrounds will NEVER EVER be surpassed.

SE had the idea to to use the arts as portraits, so they were probably drawn to accommodate multiple facial expressions being easily swappable

Whoever the frick did the boss sprites in octopath 2 for example, is probably the only motherfricker in the entire company that has any competency at it. And that is what sprites should be, baseline. Not "wow this is great but we can't expect every sprite to be like this" yes we fricking can, because that's the bare minimum for sprites to be used. If you aren't gonna put that work in, don't bother using them at all. I am not accepting zelda 2 tier spritework in every game 30 years later when the industry had accepted a standard far better than that 25 fricking years ago
