You get both regardless. The difference between the two is a handful of other party members are different depending on who you pick. Rena is generally considered the better pick because she can recruit Dias, who is one of the best party members in the game. Clause gets Noel, who is a spellcaster, and spellcasters are kinda shit in the original.
I remember the story elements being slightly different like not knowing what's happening with Clause in space as Rena because Rena isn't there, but I don't remember too much about the sidequests. Its been like a decade since I played the game so I'll take your word for it.

I wasn't being ironic. If an RPG's story is shit the game has no place. This is why SMT continues to flounder and fail and die off, while Persona rakes in cash. Soulless grinds and "lol apoccylips happened everything is gone, now wander through dungeons aimlessly for 9000000 hours to go kill God" being the only bit of story are why it keeps failing, despite Persona being the same goddamn combat and game systems except with an actual story tied to it.

Persona doesn't have a story, the main plot is dumped in the beginning then at the very end. everything in the shit sandwich''s filling is small talk off--plot that serves as character development. Tales is a constant success delivering that for decades, and Persona after 3 started doing it too.

I also thought 5 was a decent enough game with the budget in mind. Treat it as a spinoff or something.

As someone who actually likes the HD-2D style, this actually looks jarring.

I don't really care for combat being sprite based, I know it's 3D but it's 3D real time combat with fricking sprites and not 3D models, it would have been neat to get 3D models IN COMBAT and sprites outside of combat, but that's too much work I guess for them to implement.
Thinking about it, it honestly probably wouldn't be. They have all the models from their mobage sitting there. But maybe the swap between the two would have felt too weird in practice. I'm gonna rewatch the trailer a few times to see if I can glean anything else about the combat but I find it quite funny that there's now three different versions of SO2 and all of them have significant differences to their gameplay and more.
So, do I have to play other Star Ocean games to play this?

Nah, the games are loosely connected via references due to taking place in the same universe and having some character connections but tell largely separate stories. SO2 is the best entry point for the series.

SO6's artist' style only works with the type of 3D graphics FFXVI or FFVIIR has, you need borderline facescan shit for that type of art to work in 3D
I haven't played it yet but I do know SO6 had the models as collectible pieces in some board game minigame so they're definitely still there. They could also be equipped as accessories, in the demo Rena was great since she healed you.

It could have been handled a little better, especially since the comparison pic shows they weren't even trying to recreate the original place, but it looks decent enough and the art is really nice. I couldn't tell from the trailer but I'm curious if they've got yet another set of VAs to do the lines because that'd be quite funny. I'm particularly curious about the actual gameplay changes, the assist thing is genius for a game like this but I didn't see much about the chain thing. At least it looked like there's a lot of settings to have original things like the old OST which should be a staple in any and all remakes.
I would've just preferred a straight port. The difference in art styles between the character sprites, text box sprites and background just doesn't look right

It always made me laugh when I played the PS1 version how Opera and Ernest arguably had better endings with literally anyone else but each other when they were supposed to be an "established couple", with only their solo endings being worse since they just keep looking for the other iirc.
Anamnesis is the only gacha with gameplay I actually enjoyed and the multiplayer aspect was surprisingly fun.
Too bad it wasn't profitable because it was more game than scam.

Sprites on 3D isn't entirely new as mentioned, but the older way of doing things has the "quality" of the 3D match. The character sprites are blocky of course, but so are the polygons.
I don't like it when pixels receive "modern" things like environmental lighting.

2dhd is so hot and miss. OT2 was the first one I that looked more good than bad the majority of the time but even it had parts that looked that looked shitty with mediocre sprite work blanketed with gross cheap filters.

Yes, it always involves someone from the intergalatic federation being stuck on a planet that is outside of the federation and has no technology, just magic. First game was only a little different because your main character is from said primitive planet and joins up with the federation members who crash land there.

Yeah 1-3 and 5,6 have multiple endings. Mainly affected by your affection points.
4 has "multiple" endings meaning there's a true ending for all characters that you can unlock at the same tine depending on your affention points.

Bros, I'm so excited. SO2 is one of my all time favorite games. When the remake got leaked I feared the worst, but this looks like it's actually going to be faithful to the original. I'm not totally sold on the way some of the environments look, but overall it looks great. I literally had a dream about SO2 last night and woke up telling myself I should play through the game again.

Nah, the games are loosely connected via references due to taking place in the same universe and having some character connections but tell largely separate stories. SO2 is the best entry point for the series.
That would be pretty great, and seeing that Voice Type option does give a lot of hope for that. I might be mixing this up a bit but the funny thing about the VAs is that from what I remember they actually had some of the original PS1 VAs working on the PSP version, except they voiced different characters.

It could have been handled a little better, especially since the comparison pic shows they weren't even trying to recreate the original place, but it looks decent enough and the art is really nice. I couldn't tell from the trailer but I'm curious if they've got yet another set of VAs to do the lines because that'd be quite funny. I'm particularly curious about the actual gameplay changes, the assist thing is genius for a game like this but I didn't see much about the chain thing. At least it looked like there's a lot of settings to have original things like the old OST which should be a staple in any and all remakes.

If you aren't gonna put that work in, don't bother using them at all.
