it's shit, and I love DE. there's no balance whatsoever, it's sweaty bullshit from start to finish, you get exhausted before the first mission is over. they were right to "nerf" it, and it wasn't even a real nerf, they just removed like 3 enemies from the first mission for the sake of pacing, but no the youtube sweatlords don't like the state of not sweating. possessed enemies is a neat idea implemented poorly. they really didn't need to quadruple the hp of a buffed enemy, and they really didn't need to make it the main mechanic of the final boss.
          TAG 2 got it right.

            Anonymous

Yeah, Eternal was such a letdown. Its like they took everything about 2016 and decided to screw up everything it did right.
            >oh, back to basics huh? Nah, lets just insert 80 different mini mechanics into the formula to annoy the player
            >light on the lore and straight to the point? no, I think we'll need more complicated backstories. Doom Slayer-sama need to be someone of renown. Let's make up a whole universe to explain him
            >players enjoyed just shooting monsters? Hmm, that's not going to work a second time, let's add some more pointless platforming sections
I thought it was an "okay" game, but I have zero desire to replay.

turn down the difficulty then? the game should have been harder, only last map in base campaign of DE is fun once you play the game once and stop getting filtered

Agreed. Doom Eternal remains my favorite shooter. Naturally
Narrowly beats Ultrakill due to level design and polish. But the final boss completely shit the bed lol. No desire to play that again.

Story is also digshit in general but who cares.

The final boss fight in general is one of the most hilariously underbaked things in this entire franchise, and Mighty Doom exists. DLC 2 dropped the ball across the board from giving to the hammer that's more overpowered and spammable than a bullet hell bomb mechanic, to having "big" fights that were very awkwardly designed to be always contained versus the super turbo dickey puncher 3 that was the first DLC, to really bland new encounters like spinning sanic imps or 1HP hell trooper goombas.

But I mean, when you fight the Dark Lord himself who turns out to be the capital G in God who made the Doomguy in his fricking image, I expect a hell of a lot more than a timed dodge slap fight and some ghost summoning.

        Anonymous

missed potential not making the fight like when you fight yourself in ultrakill, a lot of missed potential in general. could have made it so when you go to glory kill him he interrupts you and does a reversal instead or shoots at his own demons to gain back some life

Ultrakill's mirror match was how this should have gone. The V2 fight is amazing and it blows my mind the devs didn't think to take notes from it.

He should have no affiliation, pretty cool guy, isn't afraid of anything, kills aleins and demons doesn't give a shit about being a knight or wahtever

I liked the plots of both Doom 2016 and Eternal. The expanded lore of Eternal is kinda cool, and I think id did an ok job trying to create a "universe" or full lore of Doom. I haven't read all the lore, and probably never will, but it gives some depth to the game. Regardless, the story and plot are completely optional: it's all told through skippable cutscenes and the optional Codex pages

I didn't mean to say the criticisms aren't legitimate. I was just giving my take on the new Doom "universe" in Eternal. I'm mostly indifferent to it, but I can agree with criticism like how the ending of TAG2 was too "Marvel-like".

          Anonymous

Eternal doesn't make a lick fo sense without the context of its plot though
          >Why are you in a huge space fortress? Plot.
          >Why are you chasing these hell priest dudes? Plot.
          >Why are you going to this new locale of the Sentinel homeworld? Plot.
          >Why are you meeting up with God of War's voice actor? Plot.
          >Why are you taking time out of your schedule to go destroy the super gore nest? Plot.
          >Why are you going to meet Samuel Hayden and why is he suddenly a good guy? Plot.
          Etc. etc.
You can say that the cutscenes are skippable because you've already seen them, but without them the progression of levels and events are completely disjointed and arbitrary. Eternal cares about its story, and it WANTS you to care too.

In 2016 you can reasonably make the argument that even ignoring the details of the story, the plot can still be summarized as
          >Slayer wakes up
          >is pissed
          >kills every demon in his way until he finds the biggest demon he can and kicks it in the mouth
And the game rolls forward with that momentum alone. Not so for Eternal.

What made Doom 2016 work was Doomguy's complete disregard of the overarching plot, whenever the game tried to explain something, doomguy would either stop the conversation or do something destructive to move forward
but they break that flow eventually where you absolutely have to have a long pause, talking with Samuel Hayden in his office, they're trying to explain things too much, instead of having doomguy just do what he wants.

        Anonymous

        I'd go with this.
2016 made it cool by just alluding to background stuff and setting up the player as being this vengeful rage fueled invincible turbo autist. That was all it ever needed. And the main plot was your generic demonic invasion, nothing too complicated.
Going in to detail on how everything transpired was a tremendous mistake. Having the main plot also involve stupid aliens and space knights instead of just "demons are invading again, time to put them back in their place" was the second mistake.
We did NOT need to know how the Slayer got his fricking powers, who he was, where he came from, let alone all that other shit, Did everyone at the studio forget why they made 2016 in the first place and why the campaign was liked, or did all the writers quit since?

      >2016 sets up that Samuel is gonna keep Slayer on a leash to sick on the next catastrophe
      >Eternal just fricking has Slayer in some teleporting space keep with Earth already having been mostly overrun and every plot-relevant thing but fighting the tide back happened off-screen between games
Fricking have Samuel drop the Slayer in pretty much at the start of the invasion or shortly after and then you can still have Sammy get fricked up off-screen because the Slayer can't be everywhere at the same time. Having the whole game just suddenly revolve around killing three priests with no build-up besides some logs and having zero context to what's going on, combined with shit like having the Mars space station level intro from E3 complete with Plasma Rifle when you got the fricking gun in the second level of the campaign already, tells me there was some MAJOR late-dev rewrites that the lore guy tried to awkwardly pave over a pothole with.

The lore implies the original Doomguy basically planewalked through Hell to an alternate dimension where Doom 2016 and Eternal took place. It would seem like an obvious opportunity to introduce a second alternative Doomguy native to the Bethesda dimension who ended up falling to the demons. Or a Doomgal even, just say every dimension has its own Doomguy.

Those guys got patched later on to have more than 1 hit point, which makes them running out of time so much more obvious.
I think they were an underutilized enemy type. It would have been nice to have enemies that drop a tiny amount of ammo on death.

Both of these DLC enemies were just a slap in everyone's faces. Instead of fixing what doesn't work, force people to engage with the shit that doesn't work.

              Anonymous

The microwave beam was legitimately good already, but overlooked. Spirits were a great way to get people to actually use the thing. Stone Imps were better when you could just shield bash them to death.

                >Spirits were a ____ way to FORCE people to actually use the thing.
Fixed. I use the Heat Blast 100% of the time there's no Spirit on the field. You have more than enough CC with Ice bombs and regular damage stagger.
If you want an example on how to organically get the player to use a firemode they otherwise wouldn't: See Carcasses and the Ballista's Destroyer Blade (even just a small charge completely destroys their projected shields and kills them behind it.)
It feels satisfying to do because it's among the BEST ways to deal with them, it's not satisfying when it's the ONLY way to deal with them. Especially when that way is to hang around, slowed, in a limited range, with your dick out, watching a bar fill.
Big Angels and Poison Prowlers were the only good DLC enemies.

                Anonymous

Its not just the microwave. I don't know anyone 5hrs+ into the game that uses the micro rockets, the air detonation or the full auto combat shotgun

                Anonymous

Honestly I get some use out of full auto shotgun, once it got buffed enough that good use of it can keep a good slaughterchain going with free refills. Air detonation is also good in select cases for stunning enemies briefly while you try to focus on other shit. But micro rockets, you may as well just be using something else unless you somehow exhausted most ammo options.

                Anonymous

problem with the air detonation is obviously the delayed action, there is a massive opportunity cost to waiting even a second when you could already be shooting something with a new weapon, and the cluster bomb is too handy for dealing with swarming fodder when you wanna save rockets

theres a similar issue with the triple barrel chaingun, its just too nice to have an instant shield you can pull out during oh shit -moments and surf away from danger with your shield up, its why i genuinely wish there was a way to keybind all the mods individually because i like the triple barrel chaingun aesthetically

It is when you're forced to do something awful and unfun, like using the Microwave Beam. If the Microwave Beam was actually fun to use, no one would have complained.

                Anonymous

It is fun to use, and is one of the best stunlocking tools you have access to. The Ice Bomb takes too long to recharge.
It's just like the Destroyer Blade. Nobody wanted to use it at launch because it made you slow, then people learned that you can bunny hop with it to preserve momentum. A lot of Eternal's weapons seem to have a way better secondary fire than the other at face value, but most of them still have a purpose. The auto shotgun and micro missiles are the only ones that aren't really worth using.

                Anonymous

I don't think strongly encouraging the use of mechanics in a game is bad. However, being forced to use the Microwave Beam to kill spirits is a death sentence especially in DLC, horde mode, and higher level play.

The typical encounter is as follows: you have to quickly swap mods, ensure your crosshair is locked on the spirit and not a different demon, maintain focused fire on the spirit while your movement is slowed and you're taking damage from other demons. It's not a huge problem once you're experienced enough, but it's poor balancing.

and seraphim is literally shoot it then blood punch it until it dies, DLC1 boss is shoot 2 enemies then use microwave and he's better than both. your argument here is that he's a bad boss doesn't make sense, every boss is arguably bad that stops the flow of the game besides maybe the cube boss.

The Seraphim fight was better because it expected you to do something different for each phase. All of Eternal's bosses were like that. They either changed up their attacks or changed the arena with each phase. The Dark Lord was literally just a big Marauder who sometimes summoned some red ghost monsters that died with a single hammer use. He gained no new attacks as the fight progressed, and you didn't damage him in any different ways.

        >>oh, back to basics huh? Nah, lets just insert 80 different mini mechanics into the formula to annoy the player
I don't think there are too many mechanics, the "combat-loop" is fairly straightforward and adds structure to the gameplay. Chainsaw for ammo, glorykill for health, flamebelch for armor. In 2016, you could breeze through the game by just spamming the RL and other power weapons while never having to worry much about ammo. Additionally, the demons were less "advanced" than in Eternal which made them less of a t.hreat. The Marauder is a great example.
        >light on the lore and straight to the point? no, I think we'll need more complicated backstories. Doom Slayer-sama need to be someone of renown. Let's make up a whole universe to explain him
The lore and story is entirely skippable and optional. You can skip cutscenes and read the Codex entries if you really want to learn the new lore.
        >players enjoyed just shooting monsters? Hmm, that's not going to work a second time, let's add some more pointless platforming sections
2016 had platforming sections as well. Eternal just made the platforming slightly more difficult and this filters people. The platforming is a very minor aspect of the game too lol

            >Limits how you can play the game
That's how games work. Eternal restricts your ability in this regard, but opens up other ways to play the game with the new mechanics like blood punch, dash/double-jump, etc.
            >Why is that a problem, you can impose restrictions on yourself if you want a "challenge".
How is it an engaging FPS game if you can just breeze through the game without a fun challenge? That's the definition of a game. You're basically saying you, the player, should make the game fun to play as a "game".

              Anonymous

Your "arguments" make no sense, I say you can impose restrictions yourself and you ignore it. I say it limits what you can do, you say "that's how games work, they limit you and open new ways to play"? It can't do both at once. This is just further proof to me that eternal fans are delusional.

            It's not.

Doom 2 level design overall is a big downgrade from 1 and the Icon of Sin is a dogshit final boss.

The only good levels in the original Doom games are in Episode 1. Episodes 2 and 3 are just as bad as Doom 2
Doom 2 is better purely because of the new enemies / SSG

I know story doesn't matter in Doom but Eternal's is so unbelievably shitty and cringe that it still gets distracting even with skippable cutscenes

I could excuse a lot of the sillier parts of the plot in Eternal but how the frick was there an entire super advanced hell city that nobody knew about, ever?
