LttP is a more ambitious and bigger project (console vs gameboy)
LttP has more content, better graphics, good everything. LA is smaller in scope. koholint is smaller. but it's ok because it was made to be a gameboy game.
A lot of people praise LA's items but most of them were rehashed from LttP. The roc feather was the best new item, but the rest are passives (bracelet, mirror shield, etc) or things that already existed. LA does really good dungeons, but so does LttP.
LttP is better just as OOT is better than MM, mainly because it is a bigger game, done from scratch, and overall equally good quality.
Not to say LA is bad though. Both LttP and LA are top 2 best 2D zeldas. 1993 and still unmatched.
this has never been more true then when I started last replaying the game. LTTP feels like OOT, in the way npcs comment on stuff in the overworld, and in the dungeon design how they feel practically 3D but flat.
LA had Zelda II elements, Mario enemies, a novel story for a Zelda title (granted I guess they were all fairly novel when there were only 4 of them) and PORTABLE when not taking up the TV screen meant something. Also better soundtrack.
>mario enemies
cute but doesn't matter at the end of the day >better soundtrack
besides ballad of the wind fish, ocarine tunes and tal tal heights, the other songs were whatever >zelda II enemies
thats nice. >it's le heckin portablerino
doesn't matter.
The problem is that LA generally is more compact and thus makes more use of the areas
LTTP, while good, fails a lot in that overworld is not used as much and as such, it seems more empty
I also dislike how dungeons in LTTP seem to require more backtracking and are overall slower due to the animation and sprites
I never felt LTTP being slow.
both games have backtracking. It's just that naturally LA's backtracking feels less because koholint is smaller.
The "empty" areas in LttP overworld are not many. But I agree that LA makes the most out of every space more.
LttP has better dungeons
LA also attracts Speedrunning troons a lot, more than LttP.
LA has a really nice "every square of the map has something" which extends to Oracles, but LttP's bigger map covers the same amount of explorable content either way.
Also the stuff to find in Hyrule Overworld is much more than just the 26 seashells of LA.
It took playing a mod that allows for 3 heart runs for LttP to grow on me. Having played both that and the Hero Mode hack for DX, I would say LttP is better, but they're close.
i love both so much
lttp is amazing and redefined so much for gaming
but la is just like mindblowing how they could fit so much exploration into a gameboy cartridge
Both are top 2 2-D Zeldas.
Not much to talk about of gold standards. We should talk about how we can improve the other lesser games and how to improve them since modern devs need that help since theyre stupid young millenials without talent.
For instance, LBW wasn't bad, but they have an incessant need to "innovate" with the rentals and "open" order, when all they need to do is to create a good artesenal experience. to me, it's a pre-text to be lazy and don't putt effort in the roadmap design of the game.
LBW is a top tier 2D Zelda. It’s the only one that is about the quality of LA and LttP. I don’t dislike the capcom games at all, but they’re definitely a step below those three.
No it’s just short and cute but has a bunch of fun little things to discover like any Zelda game
It was mostly just how smooth the game feels to play in addition to being portable in the 90s on your game boy. Having a full fledged adventure that you can save any time in your pocket was unmatched. It’s just pure perfect Zelda formula. The bosses are just hard enough. The puzzles are just hard enough. Everything is just so well tuned to keep all levels of gamer entertained, and it also has a great memorable catchy soundtrack for something on a handheld.
Complete misframing. The classic style of zelda works independently of level of linearity which is why you can have everything from Zelda 1 or alttp (pretty non linear) to Skyward Sword (hallway simulator) that still follow the same style and formula
The problem with "open world" (even though most of them are open world, you really mean Switch Zelda games) is that the dungeons suck balls cause they lack any restrictions. The quality of any Zelda game directly correlates to the complexity of its dungeons.

>including the sword
I think this is the only big negative I have about LttP. The sword range feels awful going back to it once you're used to future games.
this is a love-hate thing I have with it, on one hand I would wish it to be bigger, but on the other hand it's an unmistakable unique quality to the game. Something about LTTP, all of it feels like miniature, like you're playing with toys in a toyset or something. I actually enjoy this aspect a lot. I think the aesthetic for LA's remake doesn't fit that game, but would have absolutely fit LTTP
Link's Awakening was always a poor man's ALttP, I don't think anyone would dispute that. That sweet sweet fan port DX HD does add 2 item buttons which was my main complaint with the original game. I hate the look of the remake so I didn't bother with that one.
You know, with the release of LADXHD, I finally played through it in its entirety and I can definitively say that LTTP is just remixed LA. They're both good games.
As a kid at 5 I could never beat Bottle Grotto because I couldn't figure out you had to throw the genie bottle. I had three files where I basically screwed around after getting the power bracelet not knowing where to go but exploring.
Both are top 2 2-D Zeldas.

basically this. Also the dungeons were an absolute joke. Game was too easy.
?
It was always better

OOT is just ALttP but 3D
this has never been more true then when I started last replaying the game. LTTP feels like OOT, in the way npcs comment on stuff in the overworld, and in the dungeon design how they feel practically 3D but flat.
>OOT is just ALttP but good
>OoT is good
Basically this. Just can't compare the production values
LA had Zelda II elements, Mario enemies, a novel story for a Zelda title (granted I guess they were all fairly novel when there were only 4 of them) and PORTABLE when not taking up the TV screen meant something. Also better soundtrack.

Hello zoomer.
>doesn't matter
it does matter...
we had to often use our parents TV so being able to play on the couch or on our bed was crucial
I think they’re evenly matched despite being two totally different beasts.
The problem is that LA generally is more compact and thus makes more use of the areas
LTTP, while good, fails a lot in that overworld is not used as much and as such, it seems more empty

LA has a tremendous amount of backtracking, both in overworld and dungeon design. Face Shrine is the worst, Turtle Rock while egregious was enjoyable.
Why was his hair pink?
It's related to a palette bug combined with the need to swap Link into his pink bunny form, as well as the blue and red mail palettes.
Sprite pallet limitations.
Because pink hair is cool
What are your thoughts on inflation?
LA has screenwarping and the doghouse glitch aka the most fun glitches to ever appear in a game
speedrunning troon spotted.
actual troon spotted
LttP has better dungeons
LA also attracts Speedrunning troons a lot, more than LttP.

Was never fond of the giant knife ears they depicted Link with in LttP. at least in LA/Oracles it looks like it's the hair.
Both are top 2 2-D Zeldas.
Not much to talk about of gold standards. We should talk about how we can improve the other lesser games and how to improve them since modern devs need that help since theyre stupid young millenials without talent.

There's no way in hell LBW is better than Oracles or minish cap.
oracles were high IQ. LBW was made for room temp IQ in how braindead it was.
>we the players need to fix the developer's games
proceeds to ruin the central motif of a game
don't quit your day job buddy
LBW's no order was lame. There's no sense of progression and it attracts all the speedrunning troons to break it.
this is irrefutable truth.
I get it, you can't appreciate the game. oh well
>liking the gimmick that killed what could've been an elaboration of LttP, the potential of a modern classic
You're not very bright.
Does anyone like Link's Awakening more than LttP? Don't get me wrong, I love LA (just like I love the Oracle games), but LttP is clearly superior.
During quarantine I went on a big 2D Zelda binge and I honestly don't get the LA love. Is it because of the trippy "Everything was a dream!" setting?
for me it's the movement, it feels very satisfying to move around in the game, which is wild because obviously it's a flat top-down game
No it’s just short and cute but has a bunch of fun little things to discover like any Zelda game

LttP is the ugliest Zelda game
No?
The problem with "open world" (even though most of them are open world, you really mean Switch Zelda games) is that the dungeons suck balls cause they lack any restrictions. The quality of any Zelda game directly correlates to the complexity of its dungeons.
Zelda 2*
I like The Minish Cap more
Either way they're both brilliant games by master director Takashi Tezuka.
Linear zeldo > open world zeldo
Complete misframing. The classic style of zelda works independently of level of linearity which is why you can have everything from Zelda 1 or alttp (pretty non linear) to Skyward Sword (hallway simulator) that still follow the same style and formula
LA's movement and items feel better to use mechanically, including the sword, it's as simple as that
>including the sword
I think this is the only big negative I have about LttP. The sword range feels awful going back to it once you're used to future games.
this is a love-hate thing I have with it, on one hand I would wish it to be bigger, but on the other hand it's an unmistakable unique quality to the game. >knockoff brand tastes better than name brand
love to see it
You know, with the release of LADXHD, I finally played through it in its entirety and I can definitively say that LTTP is just remixed LA. They're both good games.
LA running so parallel to LTTP is partly why the story motif is so compelling, you would expect it out of a dream.
As a kid at 5 I could never beat Bottle Grotto because I couldn't figure out you had to throw the genie bottle. I had three files where I basically screwed around after getting the power bracelet not knowing where to go but exploring.
Link to the Past is overrated and soulless.
*blocks your path*
It was mid. inferior to LttP in every way
basically this. Also the dungeons were an absolute joke. Game was too easy.
>inferior to LttP in every way
It took everything good about it and expanded upon it.
You didn't beat the game.
the only thing Wind Waker did well was fairies in a bottle
>is the best zelda game in your path
>Most Zelda fans have not played lttp because it "looks old"
3d games were a mistake
>LTTP Chads, now is our time
Post them!
The story, atmosphere, visuals, music, and general pacing are what I like about LA over ALttP.
