You only need to upgrade your PC in about 3 years (warranty runs out).

Video games are a cheap hobby even for third worlders. $1300 PC will be enough for 5 years without upgrading.
You like cars? New decent car is like $50k and you're going to spend $50 for fuel just to have a ride.
You like guns? 50 rounds box of 9mm is like $15.
You like travels? Don't get me down on hotel room prices for a night.

You Black folk are pathetic. Gtx1080ti from 7 fricking years ago, and ZERO reasons to upgrade, all games run perfect.
Only reason to upgrade is for VR, no ifs and no buts needed.

That has more to do with CPU in my case.
I used i5 3470k until 2019. My 2012 HD7950 was still doing not that bad.
Now I have 2070S as a GPU, but the problem is my Ryzen 3600, as it becomes the target for 30 fps 9th gen gaming.
Now I'm waiting for Zen 5 and this time I'm going for 9800X3D

I need a fast, reliable laptop for nothing but email, writing, and one piece of software that requires Windows.
The only laptops I've ever used were laptops given to me by jobs, but I need to buy this one myself. I'm not a PC or tech expert but I know enough to build my own PCs (which I've beein doing for years). However, while I understand laptop specs, I have no idea how to judge refurbished/second hand models before buying. Are there any good guys on how to judge a second hand laptop, or otherwise do you guys have a rec for a cheap laptop that will do what I need it to do? It can't be a Chromebook because of some of the software I need to use.

      I'm

I game on a used thinkpad that cost me 200 dollars

and I would suggest going to the thinkpad general on Ganker, /tpg/

If the software you want to use doesn't need great specs I would suggest a T430 or T530 for the great keyboard and waterproofness. If you need a bit more oomph get a T480 or T580 so you can watch 1080p videos and the like

I'm quite happy with my T580 i7 8650 and it only cost me ~200
