Help me anons. Is there any semi decent MMO that is entirely free?

It can even be an old MMO with 50 players. I have a lot of free time and would like to experience one. The only condition being it’s for free. I'm considering trying EverQuest (P99).

Project 1999 is one of the best MMO experiences you can have at the moment and that's coming from someone whose tried a majority of the genre over the last two decades AND tried the game for the first time in early 2019 several months after the launch of the green server.

No, everything is a log in for weeklies raid treadmill. There is no world to explore or experience. Just rush to max level and RAID. Your best bet is private servers for older games.

      >EQN
      >Landmark
I will never not be mad. This has to have been one of the biggest scams in video game history and they got away with it scott free. There wasn't even an uproar, just silence as no one ever spoke of it again.

did landmark tarnish the idea of "early access" forever? im sure it wasnt the first but it had to play a part in people being apprehensive to ever pay for an unfinished game again

I mean what did you want them to do? Sony sold the studio and whoever bought them fire everybody and scrapped canned every project to milk profits off what was left.
Landmark was actually great while it lasted, it was very promising. It played great and had a great community of amazing builders. The engine was solid.

I always felt like SOE biggest asset was their technical people. SWG,EQ2, Planetside 2, Landmark, they all had amazing engines and technologies on launch. It's such a waste.

it did? i thought the game ran like shit which ultimately helped people make the jump to world of warcraft with everyone else

Well yeah, a game that has low poly low texture models tend to run on more machines.

It's irrelevant though, the engine (and the game) did a lot more things. WoW was technically pathetic on launch but it benefited from the huge popularity of war3 and snowballed from there, that's all there is to it.

Go ahead and play P99. You will eventually lose interest. Also check out private servers like SWG Legends/SWGEMU, any WoW private server, City of Heroes Homecoming, etc. Ignore the GW 2 morons that will tell you that their mmo is free when you have to buy all their expansion and hidden DLC.

Good, you're learning. You could also look into either of the Toon Town Private servers and see why autist love those game so much. There some TERA private servers that exist but they're all the "Reach max level, do endgame dungeon now" kind of deal. The actual EQ 1 and 2 are full of bots and hacker if you even think of wanting to try those two game.

p99 isnt the greatest server by any stretch but it's definitely something you should check out if you haven't played everquest before.
it's not a perfect reproduction but it's the closest you'll get to see what mmos were like before they were popularized. it's also not a forgiving game. you may end up hating it before you even leave the newbie zone which is okay because its not for everyone. theres a reason the genre turned into what it is today

final fantasy 14 is free for a long ass time. basically the entire first and second expansion. if you take your time and appreciate the story, you can get easilly 100-200 hours out of it, and you'll likely want to sub at the end. but even if you can't pay, you'll still get those first 2 expansions worth of content. the main campaign is basically a single player final fantasy game, but you will do dungeons and raids with other players. and all of that old content is still being ran all the time by people levelling/gearing new classes

Mafias are good for MMOs as long as there are multiple. To enable that, the game needs to make it possible to grief big groups with only few people.

          Anonymous

          >Mafias are good for MMOs
It's a monopoly that keeps any new guilds from forming and usually has some insane job application level requirements to join, and good luck getting any scraps of loot for months of raiding.

            Anonymous

If the mafia gets too exclusive, greedy or top-heavy, individuals will start griefing them at the grassroots level and eventually form a new mafia.
The game only has to make guerrilla griefing possible.

            Anonymous

That doesn't mean they'll actually use it, especially the botters and gold farmers. The worst fate for a Chinese WoW player is having to play with other Chinese players exclusively.
Hardcore players should have gotten their own realm first and been forced to move over to it. Even if most chinks can't fricking communicate in English 99 times out of 100, at least there's SOME meaningful interaction you can have with them through grouping up and completing quests. You can't do that with hardcore players, they're purely a hindrance you're in constant competition with until you reach the Great Filter of level 35-40 where they start thinning out, but even then you'll still run into the c**ts occasionally.

I dont know shit about turtle WoW, is hardcore a specific setting or a mindset?

              Anonymous

Specific setting, disregard them, it's 1.12-based which is a dealbreaker for me personally. I would recommend Duskhaven Reforged when it releases in October or Project Epoch. Both are classic+ servers based on 3.3.5 (WOTLK client) with custom zones, quests, dungeons/raids, race and class combos. Duskhaven even has Mythic+ dungeons and shit like a Bard class.

I tried P99. It was interesting from an academic perspective but not fun as a game for someone who didn't play it back then. Game's very cryptic and rudimentary, which is charming, but the playerbase is very insular and myopic in a way that makes getting any onboarding basically complete gibberish. Motherfrickers told me mining bonechips for cash to sell to higher level players for some quest turnin that it turns out barely fricking anyone needed. So as a newbie you cam explain to be regularly ignored and just solo leveling for months on end.
I wish it was as exciting as the Keith Parkinson illustration makes it look
