on the one hand i think you're a moron for not calling it a real game
on the other i do kinda agree that wonder doesn't look that different to NSMB and it makes me wonder what the point is when we have mario maker

      Anonymous

They said themselves the Mario Maker was the last word on NSMB, and they would have to do something different if they ever made another full 2D Mario, which they seem to be trying to do. Time will tell if it's a significant step forward for the formula, or just a bunch of gimmicks though.

        Anonymous

        yeah i guess so
it basically has to be as big a difference as mario 3 was to the original mario but for nsmb if we look at it as "significant enough to be a new game" and i don't know if the gliding and pushing are enough to justify that so far

Seems like they're focused on doing lots of weird things with the level design. That power up that makes the world around you transform is obviously going to be a huge thing.

            Anonymous

It's merely going to transform a level from being a static Mario level to one with moving obstacles, but Mario levels have had moving obstacles since forever. What I'm saying is that the whole "gimmick" is a scam.

You're absolutely right, 2D platformers are hardly a game and even VN's like ace attorney require more interaction, yet you have crowds saying the latter isn't a game and nothing about the former because it's popular. Curious you'll see a lot of people on Ganker claiming to be redditors, yet they fall in the same pattern of thinking regarding this.

Most of these Mario games let you know why you're pushing the buttons within the first few minutes. The ones that don't have that in-game all had it in the manual.
The story to the first game actually puts a lot of emotional weight behind every block that Mario or Luigi breaks. You might be into it.

Platformers are for children and manchildren.
Dont try to understand what the appeal is.
It will sell million because parents will buy it for their children to keep them occupied, not because people are looking for an engaging and stimulating experience.

      Anonymous

The appeal is ease of movement, acrobatics, and weaving a character through tightly designed obstacle courses. If you don't get it, it's not for you.
Don't worry about it. Play your "very grown up" games, where you character is planted to the ground, and talks at you while you move stiffly through hallways, and pick up crafting materials. You're an adult. You can handle those themes.

  16. 11 months ago
    Anonymous

    >What's the appeal?
You run and jump through obstacles courses surrounded by pretty scenery and set to good music. The characters in these games have a very tangible sense of momentum to their movements that adds to the challenge of navigating said obstacle courses. Power-ups further add variety to the gameplay, and clear times and high scores encourage replayability.

Also, nostalgia, obviously. The first NES game was a legitimately ground-breaking video game that left a lasting impact on the platforming genre and is one of the most iconic games to have ever existed. There have also been several sequels to that game that all enjoyed equal or greater global popularity than the first game. The series has been consistently popular for nearly forty years and was likely among one of the first video game series that a lot of people in their twenties and older played as kids.
But you already knew all of that. You just wanted to see if someone was bored enough to write this.

I don't understand why Ganker has a boner for this, but seems to hate the NSMB games. It's literally the same. It will play exactly the same with few extra gimmicks. It will be toddler level of difficulty. They literally only changed the art style a little.

      Anonymous

I'm not Ganker and merely someone who posts here sometimes, but my biggest gripe with the New series was the artstyle.
I didn't play all of them, just NSMB, NSMB Wii and NSMB 2, but I didn't think they were bad games. The Wii game was actually really good. The 3DS game, 2, was a huge disappointment, though. It was a very short game that didn't feel like it was worth what I paid for it.

    >That's not a game

You progress in a level. By running right yes, that's how you advance in a level in most 2D games. You dodge or attack enemies, you collect things, you explore hidden paths, some items give you abilities, you can die because of environment hazards or if you get hit a few times, etc.
There. I just described a game. Mario games are quintessential examples of video games.

I don't like Mario, it doesn't interest me, I played maybe 4 mario games in 20+ years of gaming but you'd have to be really moronic and contrarian to think it doesn't qualify as a game.
