It kinda was. Most releases were overshadowed by Kojimbo's spooky demo.
2014 had Alien Isolation, Bayonetta 2, SP Stick of Truth, DKC Tropical Freeze, Titanfall, Sunset Overdrive, MGS Ground Zeroes, inFamous Second Son, Shovel Knight, and Dark Souls II. All of those games have their issues but every single one would've been better a GOTY than Inquisition.

Nothing is broken about a weapon that wants you to look into enemy for 5 seconds before firing. If someone kills you with smart pistol they could've killed you with a regular assault rifle too.

NTA but Prey was the System Shock 3 a lot of people dreamed of. It’s an excellent game.

I would say its barely good, like barely reaches the 7.5/10 score.
Just from its year i would say, Sekiro, Pathologic 2, Outer Wilds, Resident Evil 2 and DMC5 are better games.
Outer Wilds was easily the better indie, it was an actual good game with strong game design and innovative space systems, its a genuine miracle of an indie game, then you have Pathologic 2 which was more artisitc and atmosphere and even more immersive and interesting to play than that dialogue slog that is called Disco Elysium, just because its the biggest im14andthisisdeep material doesnt make it game of the year.
Choosing DE over a game like Outer Wilds is instant failure in evaluating game design and merits on game quality.

Stellar Blade could have taken the empty spot, but it's almost certainly blacklisted from nominations like Hogwarts Legacy.

Helldivers is only winning the online/community awards, closely beating Palworld. And honestly Tekken 8 should take FF7's spot. Let fighting games shake up the weeb market more.
T8 is getting dogged right now for pulling a "the big microtransaction come in at Month 2 so the reviews don't deduct points for it and the word of mouth isn't bad" and it being PvP focused hurts its chances at GOTY ambitions. It'll take Best Fighting Game (even though UNI 2 is better, and I say that liking T8 more than 6 & 7 combined) and MAYBE one of the other minor awards.
