Sonic 3D is severely underrated. It's comfy rather than fast-paced, but it still uses Sonic pinball physics. It was neither meant to be a mainline Sonic game nor a Mario 64/Crash competitor, but SEGA had to quickly make a Saturn port of it because their other Saturn Sonic projects fell through (not Sonic 3D's fault.) It has two great soundtracks. One of the original devs made a director's cut with improved physics among other things.

Yeah, 3D Blast is pretty decent once you get used to the controls. I also don't see very many people acknowledging that 3D Blast is literally "3D" Flicky, which becomes very apparent once you unlock both games in the Mega Collection.

Also that era of 3D Sonic renders were 2muchSOVL2control. I miss when Sonic was kinda glossy and spiky looking. (Heroes was too floppy looking) And the pointed shoes. God I miss them. All of Classic Sonic's OG design exuded "pointiness" which worked because he's a fricking hedgehog. Meanwhile Modern Sonic is just very bulbous and globular and too soft looking for my sensitive autistic tastes.

      >yep, a star on legs and a queer jester are definitely gonna surpass our previous mascot in popularity

Nice cropped porn homosexual. Anyway, NiGHTS and Ristar weren't ever intended to be competitors to Sonic in any capacity. They were merely creative outlets for Sonic Team who were (understandably) a little burnt out on making Sonic games. Sad that they didn't get to keep that outlet, because I think Sonic suffered because of it since they obviously started shoving their unused original game ideas into Sonic games where they had no business being at all.

I fricking hate Tyson's Sonic. I also hate the Felix The cat knockoff remodel they've been using in merchandise. Generations Classic model has also been pretty dog shit.
Judy Totoya still draws what I consider to be the best interpretation of Classic Sonic. He's still got the cuteness everyone seems to think he needs, but the needle is still very clearly on the cool side. Tyson's Sonic leans far too much on the cute. I can't ever picture that version of him ever going hard.

I like this huemonkey animator's iteration of Sonic, he trends towards angular but still has the roundness of his actual sprites from the Genesis and SMS/GG games. Ends up with something pretty close to how Classic looked in the Sonic CD cutscenes, or the transitional design when Sonic Adventure was first being drafted and Modern hadn't quite gotten there yet

Maybe at least one person on the team made that connection but more likely they just wanted to imitate GoW but also didn't want to give Sonic a weapon so stretchy arms was the solution.

It could've been. It's possible the stretchy arms came from some Ristar game prototype but eventually got turned to Sonic.

Not many people say it, but you're right. Sega were moronic for this. Allowing Naka and Sonic Team to focus on NiGHTS instead of Sonic during the Saturn era did irreparable damage to both Sonic and Sega. They literally tanked the company for mid.

On one hand, I think nights is a great game, on the other hand, I agree that both sega and sonic would probably be in a better position had they made a proper sonic game for the Saturn instead of nights. The fact that yuji naka actually prevented sonic xtreme from making headway because it would’ve used stuff from nights is the most confusing thing ever, he had to have realized that abandoning sega’s mascot for a new ip and actually trying to hold sega’s mascot back was a bad and selfish idea, right?

          Anonymous

Sonic was never popular in Japan(according to Naka and Ohshima, Japanese kids were sending letters to Sonic Team asking who Sonic was when NiGHTS came out) and the Genesis sold like shit over there(it was a distant third place compared to the SNES and the TurboGrafx-16) so Sonic Team probably just didn't see the point in making yet another Sonic game instead of a new IP that could appeal more to Japanese Sega fans.

Of course, Sega could've easily just b***hslapped them and said "ayo what the frick are you guys doing, we're making a new console and we need a launch title with the blue rat, get to work", but they didn't.

        Anonymous

I think Sonic Team had the leeway to do new things because the Virtua series was the hot new thing from SEGA at that time, Virtua Fighter was more of a system seller than Sonic. That said, yanking the use of the NiGHTS engine from a Sonic game because it's not being made in Japan was a really stupid move and get to the core of what Naka's problem was.

This is actually a pretty alright isometric game. I think if the entire game was designed more like Dia ind Dust, Volcanic Valley and Panic Puppet, it would have been far better received. The Flicky hunting just doesn't suit the gameplay. I don't know what John Burton was on about when he said 3D Blast was slow. If you actually zoom around the levels without doing Where's Waldo, it's pretty damn quick. He programmed a damn good engine. The cramped level design was it's ultimate curse.

But, I'd reiterate a bit my previous statement. I meant something more like "explore areas outside playable space". Clearly this has to do alot with it being my childhood game, but Sonic 3D always felt so vast to me. Due to how camera is positioned, there's always just enough stuff aside from playable area to make you wonder, what's out there? What if you could jump over the fense and go there?
Still, this is some cool shit in those videos, I'll be keeping this game on my radar.

          Anonymous

Weird. Was there ever a playable build found? I imagine the fisheye thing was to hide the deficiencies of Saturns 3d capabilities, kind of pigeonholes you in to looking in such a way where the game can offload 75% of the world and focus on whats in your limited view. Also I bet controller was a consideration to some extent, I had a 3d controller but what percent of Saturn owners did, maybe 5% at best? So camera control, 3d movement, easier to force you on a plane like bug or early Xtreme would have

Achshually S3DB has this - spindash. Fairly useless as a "I need speed" crutch because you don't need speed it provides, but it makes attacking enemies easier, save for rare flying robots and the rape snowmen whose shots tend to hit you even when it shoots them in opposite direction.
