The standard for content and combat in MMOs has gone way way down since WoW's hayday.
You got GW2 and ESO that high up when their combat system feels like garbage to play, and is not fun at all. At least ESO has voiced questlines and doesn't have quests titled "Beat the Bigot" and "Smash the Fash", but neither of those games belong that high because they're just not fun.
Don't know enough about OSRS, or EVE, but Lineage, Rift and BnS don't belong in A tier as well.
The only games with fun combat in this list are Classic and Tera, and Tera doesn't exist anymore, while Classic is going down the rabbithole of repeating every expansion until the game becomes dogshit again.
Also PSO2:NGS is missing from the list, it's real shit but at least the combat is fun and the character creator is good, but even that doesn't belong above B tier.
Aside from Classic WoW, the only other game with open world PVP for resources here is BDO, right? I think maybe Archeage too?

Full loot PvP MMOs are niche in NA and EU. The majority of the playerbase doesn't speak english.
It still has about 300k daily players on no more than two servers and literally zero bots since the switch to Battleye anti cheat.
T3 resources are always high in demand because unlike T4+ it has no enchantment level and is used in every refinement process.
You don't even need to let your bots run in the yellowzone. In bluezones nobody can touch you and they are full of T3 resources. 4.1 and 5.1 are worthless and you rarely find better stuff in T5 yellowzones anyway.

One does the most moronic "new" ideas imaginable while completely ignoring its fanbase, the other does old ideas at a high quality with an aesthetic and world not seen in other MMOs and a story that mogs pretty much any other MMO out. FFXIV's ideas are definitely cloned from old WoW (admitted by the devs even) but nothing about the actual game is "phoned in"
Copying GW2 and making flying at least somewhat interesting is better than anything FFXIV has ever done in any of their expansions. FFXIV most certainly does not do old idea with high quality, they give you the exact same shit you did before, but with a different background. Some of the aesthetics are nice true, but the world is empty, dead and useless, even WoW has FFXIV beat when it comes to it's world. And bragging about story in an MMO is the most braindead thing you could possibly do, because it's presentation will always be worse than even the most mediocre single-player game. If you want an idea of how phoned in the game is, just look at Variant/Criterion dungeons. Variant has 3 paths for you to choose from, but it's pathetically easy as it's main purpose is just to give you a bit game whilst hanging out with your lore guide. Meanwhile Criterion is the same dog shit dungeon, but with savage tier bosses. Even the live letter they did for DT was a complete bore, because they just announced more of the same shit we already have, and don't even get me started on Island Sanctuary.

This is moronic considering the genre with some of the best writing is isometric CRPGs which have essentially no "presentation" for their story. Same goes for many of the best JRPGs. The trope that MMOs don't or shouldn't have good story should not make their efforts in doing so null. Its effort nonetheless and they were successful.
CRPGs allow you to roleplay and use their simple presentation to provide you with a variety of dialogue choices that take into account your race, class, stats or gear. FFXIV has none of those, outside of a few NPCs mentioning your job, which doesn't change anything. FFXIV is supposedly an MMORPG and soon you'll be able to hit max level without ever interacting with another, if there plans on expanding Trusts come to fruition. FFXIV puts the MSQ before anything and the entire game suffers for it.

You are side stepping and changing my comparison. The point is, the presentation and delivery of story in CRPG functions well despite it essentially just being a book. Presentation has nothing to do with RPG elements. JRPGs often do not have meaningful choices as well and still can tell great stories with weak "presentation". I gave an explanation as to why people tolerate the simple presentation CRPGs. I for one can't tolerate JRPGs incredibly simple presentation, because they don't have anything to make up for it. Besides, both genres are primarily made up of single-player games. Forcing a stupid JRPG story on you in an MMORPG is beyond stupid and using it as a positive of the game is even stupider. There's a reason people call ARR a filter, because it's slow, boring and barely has any gameplay.

I don't understand why you're differentiating the various stages of some games anyway but not others. Raganarok has Renewal and Pre which is basically the "Classic" that changes the mechanics FAR more significantly than classic to retail WoW. Maple has Pre-bigbang which is basically changed to the point the entire map is new. There's like 4 different active versions of Runescape as well. TERA's differences are microscopic in comparison yet you still split them.

It was to some degree ahead of its time. It released as a hardcore game back in the day when most MMO players were actually casuals, not zoomers who min-max a game to death before it's released. Getting 40 people to do a long atunment that was what killed it. On top of that PvP was a shitshow from the getgo, there was a way to reset rank if you had already gotten a high rank/gear you could just perma smurf. They also invested a lot of time into content no one played like the big AV-Style PvP mode (that was played literally 3 times).

Metin2, Silkroad Online, Tibia, Knight Online, Cabal Online, Lineage 2, MU Online. All of these were pretty big in those kinds of countries, for some reason.
Rift at its peak deserves S tier for being 10 years ahead of everything else at the time from a systems perspective. People don't realize how nuts some of the stuff it did was for 2011-2014. It also still has the best class design and wardrobe customization for characters in a MMO to this day among other things.

But unlike eve, you could control multiple fleets, each with up to 15 ships I think, and then there were weekly corporation wars as the stations all went neutral and would be fought over, before locking to the new owner for the rest of the week.

Runescape hardly even classifies as a game. The game is more mathematically designed around hobbled progress and time gating than any other game in the history of the medium, not a single change happens in that game without an army of devs mathing out its exact engagement time and long term time sinking. The game is the epitome of a busy work simulator.
Some MMOs may be slightly better then others but at the end of the day its the ol´shit. Only EVE had something special in the way how players actions impact the economy, the territory, all these stories and drama that naturally occur by just playing the game and interacting with eachother. Infact most MMOs could just be considered big open world rpg games with co-op, while EVE i would say is a true MMO.

The standard for content and combat in MMOs has gone way way down since WoW's hayday.
You got GW2 and ESO that high up when their combat system feels like garbage to play, and is not fun at all. At least ESO has voiced questlines and doesn't have quests titled "Beat the Bigot" and "Smash the Fash", but neither of those games belong that high because they're just not fun.
Don't know enough about OSRS, or EVE, but Lineage, Rift and BnS don't belong in A tier as well.
The only games with fun combat in this list are Classic and Tera, and Tera doesn't exist anymore, while Classic is going down the rabbithole of repeating every expansion until the game becomes dogshit again.
Also PSO2:NGS is missing from the list, it's real shit but at least the combat is fun and the character creator is good, but even that doesn't belong above B tier.
Aside from Classic WoW, the only other game with open world PVP for resources here is BDO, right? I think maybe Archeage too?

One does the most moronic "new" ideas imaginable while completely ignoring its fanbase, the other does old ideas at a high quality with an aesthetic and world not seen in other MMOs and a story that mogs pretty much any other MMO out. FFXIV's ideas are definitely cloned from old WoW (admitted by the devs even) but nothing about the actual game is "phoned in"
Copying GW2 and making flying at least somewhat interesting is better than anything FFXIV has ever done in any of their expansions. FFXIV most certainly does not do old idea with high quality, they give you the exact same shit you did before, but with a different background. Some of the aesthetics are nice true, but the world is empty, dead and useless, even WoW has FFXIV beat when it comes to it's world. And bragging about story in an MMO is the most braindead thing you could possibly do, because it's presentation will always be worse than even the most mediocre single-player game. If you want an idea of how phoned in the game is, just look at Variant/Criterion dungeons. Variant has 3 paths for you to choose from, but it's pathetically easy as it's main purpose is just to give you a bit game whilst hanging out with your lore guide. Meanwhile Criterion is the same dog shit dungeon, but with savage tier bosses. Even the live letter they did for DT was a complete bore, because they just announced more of the same shit we already have, and don't even get me started on Island Sanctuary.

This is moronic considering the genre with some of the best writing is isometric CRPGs which have essentially no "presentation" for their story. Same goes for many of the best JRPGs. The trope that MMOs don't or shouldn't have good story should not make their efforts in doing so null. Its effort nonetheless and they were successful.
CRPGs allow you to roleplay and use their simple presentation to provide you with a variety of dialogue choices that take into account your race, class, stats or gear. FFXIV has none of those, outside of a few NPCs mentioning your job, which doesn't change anything. FFXIV is supposedly an MMORPG and soon you'll be able to hit max level without ever interacting with another, if there plans on expanding Trusts come to fruition. FFXIV puts the MSQ before anything and the entire game suffers for it.

Presentation has nothing to do with RPG elements. JRPGs often do not have meaningful choices as well and still can tell great stories with weak "presentation". You have completely changed the conversation.
I gave an explanation as to why people tolerate the simple presentation CRPGs. I for one can't tolerate JRPGs incredibly simple presentation, because they don't have anything to make up for it. Besides, both genres are primarily made up of single-player games. Forcing a stupid JRPG story on you in an MMORPG is beyond stupid and using it as a positive of the game is even stupider. There's a reason people call ARR a filter, because it's slow, boring and barely has any gameplay.

No, my expectations are from actual MMORPGs like UO, EQ and DAoC. The whole point of an MMORPG is existing a large world with other players and making your own stories together. Not being railroaded down a linear story where a plot and characters are forced onto you. Not to mention your character's personality and morality are fix'd as well.

I don't understand why you're differentiating the various stages of some games anyway but not others. Raganarok has Renewal and Pre which is basically the "Classic" that changes the mechanics FAR more significantly than classic to retail WoW. Maple has Pre-bigbang which is basically changed to the point the entire map is new. There's like 4 different active versions of Runescape as well. TERA's differences are microscopic in comparison yet you still split them.

It was to some degree ahead of its time. It released as a hardcore game back in the day when most MMO players were actually casuals, not zoomers who min-max a game to death before it's released. Getting 40 people to do a long atunment that was what killed it. On top of that PvP was a shitshow from the getgo, there was a way to reset rank if you had already gotten a high rank/gear you could just perma smurf. They also invested a lot of time into content no one played like the big AV-Style PvP mode (that was played literally 3 times).
Yes but it's incredibly dead, sometimes it's literally unplayable for weeks. I played it a while ago for the nostalgia and there were a few people in the starter zones but mid game it was empty.
For reference this was the atument. The silver+ in dungeons were fairly hard for the average player, I remember we had to carry a lot of people through and still would end up with only 30~ people every raid.
As someone who has been trying mmos again due to free time opening up, The one ones I enjoyed were Gw2 and a dead one called Wakfu.

Rift at its peak deserves S tier for being 10 years ahead of everything else at the time from a systems perspective. People don't realize how nuts some of the stuff it did was for 2011-2014. It also still has the best class design and wardrobe customization for characters in a MMO to this day among other things.

You'd spawn into the galaxy with some crap ships, go to some planets, mine resources, bring them to a NPC or player owned station, sell them or make ships from them, and then go mine some more or fight NPCs/other players
But unlike eve, you could control multiple fleets, each with up to 15 ships I think, and then there were weekly corporation wars as the stations all went neutral and would be fought over, before locking to the new owner for the rest of the week.

Runescape hardly even classifies as a game. The game is more mathematically designed around hobbled progress and time gating than any other game in the history of the medium, not a single change happens in that game without an army of devs mathing out its exact engagement time and long term time sinking. The game is the epitome of a busy work simulator.

Only EVE had something special in the way how players actions impact the economy, the territory, all these stories and drama that naturally occur by just playing the game and interacting with eachother.
