It's fun to at least switch over just to see how it is. I can give the game credit that for the most part it was okay. The main reasons people don't like the casting change though is that they brought the original PS2 voice back for the 7 dub and people liked it only to replace him with a fricking youtuber voice actor.

I think the majority of the actual voices they hired for yakuza 1 were pretty good choices, it just came down to the fact that the people directing the dub didn't put a lot of care into getting the right performance out of them. Every so often the actors would pull something out that is, while still a little awkwardly delivered, is pretty well done for the scene.
Although it's a little hard to deny that i don't think of the characters this way anymore. Hamil completely forgets Majima, not hard to understand considering he probably did tons of gigs back then.
one thing that also probably made it harder for him to remember was the fact that the example they showed him when they asked him about it was the video that places the dub over Kiwami, so modern graphics would make him assume it's a more recent role rather than a role from 15 years ago.

The story goes into full soap opera schlock a lot of the time anyway. I don't mind it though, humor and drama mixes well, at least in vidya. The goofy stuff accentuates the serious pretty well.

Wouldn't make sense since the series have always been working on a shoestring tight AA budget. The production quality only really started stepping up more into 7th to 8th gen and it's still not that big. I mean look at how they always use the same setting, that's not indicative of high budget. Final Fantasy is really the COD of Japan.
I checked out some of the english dub in yakuza 7 and all of that also sounds awful. It doesn't help that YongYea definitely doesn't fit the role but part of it is also probably really bad voice directing. It sounds like the worst type of early 2000's anime english dub.

I absolutely approve of how the dub was handled and SEGA should have just committed to keeping Kiryu's English VA around. I fricking HATE this casting. At least with 7, Ichiban and the rest of the cast isn't carrying the legacy of Kuroda Takaya as Kiryu, so the English cast was okay. Regardless, any game starring Kiryu should only be played with the JP audio since it's not just the VA that's almost impossible to replicate, but the manner of speaking that's present in JP dramas as well. Dubbing shit with the pauses and all makes the game's presentation sound like amateur hour.
LJ was made under his supervision, and that game was KINO (even if the story was the worst in the franchise), but then again so was Ishin and that one was everything wrong with modern gaming, save for MTX.

You can easily emulate the PS3 version, just don't use the mod that lets you play at 60 as it breaks minigames and potentially some combat. The PS4 version is natively 60 and they did some fixes to it specifically when they were making it. There's a MTL patch if you want to try that

Considering that other RGG games on DE handle it just fine i assume that's mostly bullshit and they just tried the switch to Unreal Engine due to many core members of their team leaving the studio in order to join Nagoshi and his new Netease funded team.
Having your own inhouse engine with the DE is nice but if you lose most people who developed it and designed it you run into the issue that newer members who replace those old ones might struggle with it. Meanwhile everyone knows how to use UE.

Just wait for the original to get the translation patch the old team said they were still continuing, use the machine translation patch, or wait for the guys who were gonna shove Kiwami's translation into the original. The original still has a bunch of problems and the story/substories are still fairly mundane for the series, but the experience will be better compared to Kiwami.
If you want a good samurai Yakuza, play Kenzan. Yeah it's clunky and yeah playing it is a pain in the ass because you constantly have to consult a guide, but it's pure sovl and makes you feel like a true samvrai®™

I think the majority of the actual voices they hired for yakuza 1 were pretty good choices, it just came down to the fact that the people directing the dub didn't put a lot of care into getting the right performance out of them. Every so often the actors would pull something out that is, while still a little awkwardly delivered, is pretty well done for the scene.
I liked both Majima and Shimano's dubs.
Although it's a little hard to deny that i don't think of the characters this way anymore. Hamil completely forgets Majima, not hard to understand considering he probably did tons of gigs back then.
one thing that also probably made it harder for him to remember was the fact that the example they showed him when they asked him about it was the video that places the dub over Kiwami, so modern graphics would make him assume it's a more recent role rather than a role from 15 years ago.
They had the right idea getting older men but it needing to be a dub hurt them.

The story goes into full soap opera schlock a lot of the time anyway. I don't mind it though, humor and drama mixes well, at least in vidya. The goofy stuff accentuates the serious pretty well.
I love going to the toilet and playing a piss jet mini-game when I'm "supposed" to be on a timed mission that requires me to quickly reach my destination and dispatch the enemies before they bomb the whole city.

For whatever reason, Yakuza is quite literally the only series where given the choice that I've played through subbed, and it's fricking glorious in subbed.

The production quality only really started stepping up more into 7th to 8th gen and it's still not that big. I mean look at how they always use the same setting, that's not indicative of high budget. It's fine, i wouldn't say it's bad. Not that i played with it on first playthrough, but i tried it on my second playthrough and i thought it was alright. I absolutely approve of how the dub was handled and SEGA should have just committed to keeping Kiryu's English VA around. You can just tell what SEGA was really doing with this decision when they referred to Yong as a 'popular youtuber'. It's basically them trying to be hip and 'with the times' at the expense of Yakuza fans.

I fricking HATE this casting. At least with 7, Ichiban and the rest of the cast isn't carrying the legacy of Kuroda Takaya as Kiryu, so the English cast was okay. Regardless, any game starring Kiryu should only be played with the JP audio since it's not just the VA that's almost impossible to replicate, but the manner of speaking that's present in JP dramas as well. Dubbing shit with the pauses and all makes the game's presentation sound like amateur hour.

You can easily emulate the PS3 version, just don't use the mod that lets you play at 60 as it breaks minigames and potentially some combat. The PS4 version is natively 60 and they did some fixes to it specifically when they were making it. There's a MTL patch if you want to try that

Having your own inhouse engine with the DE is nice but if you lose most people who developed it and designed it you run into the issue that newer members who replace those old ones might struggle with it. Meanwhile everyone knows how to use UE.

Just wait for the original to get the translation patch the old team said they were still continuing, use the machine translation patch, or wait for the guys who were gonna shove Kiwami's translation into the original. The original still has a bunch of problems and the story/substories are still fairly mundane for the series, but the experience will be better compared to Kiwami.
If you want a good samurai Yakuza, play Kenzan. Yeah it's clunky and yeah playing it is a pain in the ass because you constantly have to consult a guide, but it's pure sovl and makes you feel like a true samvrai®™
