For example with MK1 right now, everyone hates it because there are 2 viable kameos out of ~30 and like 5 viable characters out of ~25.
I also forgot to add people are also angry at MK1 because no crossplay, no matchmaking filters, KotH is super antiquated, and in general NRS hasn't done anything to make the online experience better since they overhauled their netcode a decade ago for MKX.
Sales don't mean shit for quality, and MK1 is literally a failure on the gameplay and spectacle fronts alike. Gameplay is Mortal Kombat as you know it, sluggish and off-putting on hit registry, combined with Kameo assists that no one likes, and the spectacle is watching stiff animations cancel into each other with no real fluidity as characters fly about real awkwardly. There's no appeal once the hype wore off.
