I wanted to like Nioh but I hate the loot system and mission design.
Fromsoft's combat might be "simpler" but it's more effective and is used within stronger content (on average).

yep, playing nioh is spending most of your time in menus and dark souls is spending most of your time PLAYING the game. A shame cos nioh is othewise based but I tapped out of both nioh 1 and 2 halfway through out of boredom.

I'm proud of you for once Ganker for calling this out for what it is. Today a little faith in humanity was restored.

Ultumately the "cuhrazy" amount of action inputs, much like a fighting game, in practice becomes memorizing a handful of max dps combos. Essentially nioh 2 is executing the rote memorized combo which involves stance switching spasms that do not actually meaningfully change your stance because you are only stance switching to restore ki not actually execute a move from the different stance. Occasionally you switch to low stance for mobility or a stance with a defensive mobility option. It's nowhere near as complex in practice as the amount of options would lead you to believe, especially because gear is built around empowering specific moves which also further restricts your combat flowchart.

elaborate on the weak and strong points. i've only played ER and MonHun. Hard lock on targeting is absolutely console babby shit that ruins action games

        Anonymous

        To name a few:
I think (later) FROM games generally give bosses more elaborate movesets, which doesn't necessarily mean they're harder though
Nioh has probably the most complex player movesets and weapons, while its bosses are actually pretty simple and usually straightforward; it has more narrow boss movesets yet they're often fast to compensate or otherwise require more precise timing since i-frames are far lessNioh is also probably king of build autismoing, with MonHun (specifically GU) also offering quite a lot of choices. As a result, however, Nioh is easiest to take and break apart, although in DDDA there are several very amusingly broken things like Magic Khomie which has learned the power of Great Cannon + Full Moon Slash
In contrast, FROM games offer more modularity and capacity for mix-n-matching, which doesn't mean that the build-making process is particularly deep, but you can combine some wacky shit where other games usually have pre-baked moveset packages that you then fine-tune in different ways. FROM movesets however are generally the weakest of the bunch and are pretty one-note, however BB did spice it up quite a bit IMO
Dragons Dogma has the best niche mechanics and various immersive stuff, like your character height being a factor, darkness being propa danger and so on, it generally offers a more down to earth and realistic ARPG experience
Dragons Dogma Online had very, very interesting vocations and is a step up from DDDA, even though some are bordering on being too anime
Also Dogma & Souls have the more interesting multiplayer aspects that are quite creative, however I probably had the most fun just hunting with close friends in MH. My guilty pleasure is making autism roleplay builds and invading in lore-appropriate areas in FROM games. I have made several people think I am an npc too

          Anonymous

Based vidya enjoyer. I also agree out of Dogma/SoulsER/MonHun/NiOh that Dogma gives you the greatest immersive ARPG experience. Everything from the hubs to the quests to the dialogue to the music all are perfect. It not being level based while also not being a totally empty open world really helped with giving you a sense of scale when you're forced to travel at the start.

I definitely liked Nioh's diablostyle build autism and the combat was just fast enough and more technical than Souls that it really can't be beat in the action side for an ARPG.

No lock on works in Monster Hunter specifically because the main monsters you fight are all huge. Fighting small monsters in MonHun has always been a royal pain in the ass that literally no fan of the series likes largely due to the slow weapons and lack of lock on/attack tracking.
