Why do strategy games still look like this? Are boomers still stuck in the 80's when board games looked like this?

can you guys find something new to bicker over, this argument is getting boring. as they say, "to each his own".
Hey, I live there 😀
Now you don’t *draws katana, tips fedora*
I think the OP complains about hex-and-counter system.
Kaliningradbro?
>Half of Poland
>Third of Belarus
>Third of Lithuania
>kAlInInGrAdBrO?
Also: it's Kralovec now
>it's Kralovec now
Still better than a province based map. But yeah, even theater of war level maps should use coordinates.
Is command ops 2 a dead game? Haven't seen any news from them. I sometimes play the free scenarios. It's decent. The ai is very bad sometimes, it's sending hq and aa units against my tanks.
I still don't understand why every other operational strategy game uses hexes or provinces.
>Is command ops 2 a dead game?
Yes, the devs stopped updating it.
>The ai is very bad sometimes, it's sending hq and aa units against my tanks.
It happens because AI doesn't cheat and is not fine tuned for each mission, so it's possible to (accidentally) ambush him as he repositions his forces.
CO2 has a bunch of issues, for example, the command delay system is flawed so it's often more efficient to micro individual battalions rather than to keep the organic OOB. But it's still miles better than any other WW2 wargame.
It's sad that this game died. They should have marketed it better because it's pretty unknown among the wargaming community.
They should have made more interesting scenarios. Nobody cares about western front.
They tried. It was shilled in the wargamer, which aims for a more mainstream audience, and had articles in a bunch of sites. I think it just fails to keep people engaged.
Wargamer has a audience? I thought that nobody reads that shit website after they sold out
Because there is nothing better than gary grisby system for war in the east. I like titanic simulations.
>t. Not boomer
>titanic simulations
>soviet units literally get magical buffs from late 1942 onwards because the devs have no fricking idea why Germany stalled despite winning so hard in 1941-1942
WitE is an overdesigned pile of ahistorical crap and illogical nonsense, and anyone who says otherwise is a larping moron. WitP is the only gary grigsby game worth playing.
Skill use
Go back to goi4 kid.
>goi4 kid
>recommends witpae, which is more complex and clunky than wite
How did they mess up WITE but not mess up with WITP
Lack of research leading to questionable design choices. To be fair, it's difficult to research the Eastern front, lots of sources are either Soviet propaganda, German propaganda, or Allies' fanfictions.
WitP is a lightning in the bottle, the devs picked a very ambitious theater of war for a wargame and nailed it.
Thank you for confirming that you haven't played WitE just like all WitE shills here. Because WitE is actually a wehraboo's wet dream. Not like you'd be aware of it, because like I said, you're a larping moron who hasn't played the game.
>WitE is actually a wehraboo's wet dream.
how
I agree with that guy and I am both a wehraboo and have 1.5k hours in WitE mp. In a balanced game the German player should be able to take Leningrad or Moscow in 1941, and if he's even slightly better than his opponent he can take both and likely close the game out in '41.
Expanding on this, the problem is that Axis has a much higher skill ceiling than Sovs, particularly in 1941. Even worse a lot of the skills can be learned by reading the forum and AARs, like optimal rail repair, use of air, and most egregiously the optimal turn 1 start. Common '41 operational tricks, most infamously the Leningrad right hook, are also all teachable, if you know where to look. The Soviets, by contrast, are an almost immobile mass. Soviet gameplay against a good German player consists of spreadsheet management and creating a checkerboard defense in front of wherever you think he's going to push hardest. Obviously this changes if you make it to '43 or so, and Soviet gameplay becomes much more like Axis gameplay, but for the first 2 years you are playing a very different game.
> Axis has a much higher skill ceiling
hitler was noob
>have 1.5k hours in WitE mp
WitE2 seem to have buffed the soviets in general and make things more balanced, albeit there are still a bunch of being polished.
To be fair, each turn in WitE 1&2 is like 10 minutes minimum, and can go up to an hour depending on how much you want to fine tune your stuff.
>each turn in WitE 1&2 is like 10 minutes minimum
Sounds far more bearable than witp's nightmare tier turns.
The only time my mp turns took under an hour was during mud. 1-3 hours per turn was probably normal.
>you're a larping moron who hasn't played the game.
The irony is almost palpable.
Seethe harder, goi$troony.
So is this true? Wehraboos can't handle their gross deutchland ubermensh losing to damn Russians? That explains why literally every western-made game (except for gems like WiTE or JT productions) about the East Front deals only with 1941-1942
>What is that, a functional UI? NOOOOOO I CAN'T PLAY A GAME WITHOUT GIANT MOBILE GAME BUTTONS AND SHITTY 3D MODELS
kys zoomer
>pictographic icons in buttons
>also shows hotkeys for them
>and a tooltip when you hover over
Seems good to me.
trve chads just play on vassal directly
One thing I never understood. How do you deal with reactive fire/turn interruptions when playing PbEm?
you don't, you have to play those games live
One way is an honor system where you stop and interrupt, which is as stupid as it sounds.
Another is to resolve the complex interactions live, and pbem the rest
Can also house rule to cut down on back and forth
Best is to play pbem friendly games
These games have actual depth, and most people when faced with it don't like depth, only the illusion of it. They want lots of systems complexity and to min max in a specific way after watching a youtube video.
When faced with actual depth, most people crumple and have a tantrum.
What hex and counter game would you recommend for a drooling moron such as myself?
If you want those that are not that complex, then check out Decisive Campaigns, Shadow Empire (it’s sci fi but with proper wargame mechanics), Advanced Tactics. Whatever Vic made, basically.
Other options: games by John Tiller, may peace be upon him. Also decent low and mid level hex and counter wargames, basically a classic style
I am also kind of moronic and the easiest of them all to get into were Campaign Series.
Operational Art of War 4 is very simple if you can get past the admittedly clunky UI. It's supposed to be able to simulate anything from Waterloo to modern day, which does mean that some of the older scenarios feel a little bare bones because a bunch of mechanics just don't exist (like air power, EW, WMDs, armored units.)
The most zoomer game is Civ 5, which turned squares into hexes, so here you go, baiter-kun
shut the frick up you little homosexual, post your address and I will come sacrifice you to Grigory Kulik
Advanced Tactics Gold is still my favourite. I did a PVP match against some autistic german guy a couple years back. Owned his ass despite the fact that he picked the map (with its own unit design/ruleset that I never played before), picked which side he plays, and reloaded each turn like 3 times every turn with some bullshit excuse every time. Felt great bros.
ATG has a random map generator which puts it leagues above most games of its kind. A lot of cool unique maps/mods too.
ATG was my first proper wargame. While I did enjoy it, I hated how little automation it has and how many clicks are necessary to setup one unit, nevermind the hundreds needed to win a match. It got tiring really quick.
Not sure when you played it last, but you can create unit designs (subformations) and automate reinforcements from HQs.
There's also plenty of hotkeys that help you play the game a lot faster. I see your complaint a lot but it's honestly not as bad as you think once you learn hotkeys and how to do shit quick. I mean, yeah, turns can still take a long time depending on map size and how far along into the match you are, but I kinda like that. There needs to be enough micromanagement so that the skill ceiling is still high.
While VR Designs' games have their flaws, they are all my favourite wargames.
Is there any way to change the resolution/ui scale? im trying to play it on a small resolution and half the button are outside the screen
Tips for learning this game? I picked it up on sale but am having trouble learning the rules cause I'm a dumbass.RAPH0B
There's an in-game tutorial that teaches the basics of playing the game. Then read this guide on how to optimally use each unit: https://ftp.matrixgames.com/pub/AdvancedTacticsGold/AdvancedTacticsGold_StrategyGuide.zip
Gary Grigsby started making games in 79. He really is the master of hex war gaming imo and I love WiTe2. There is definitely room in the genre for innovation but I hope hex wargames never die.
I think the master of hex wargaming has to be Mark Simonitch
They're better than grid square based systems tbqh.
On the topic of hex-based strategy games, Flashpoint Campaigns Southern Storm is finally coming out this month after years of delays. If you like brigade-scale, WEGO, cold war, OODA simulators then it'll be right up your alley.
Whats new? I recall getting told to wait for their new game.
>Minimum screen resolution
>1024x768
What resolution are you trying to use?
Well shit, im trying to play it on 1024x600
Windows allows for downscaling, so you can use 1024x768 but the text is gonna look a bit hard to read since it has to fit those extra pixels. Just untick the hide unsupported resolutions for this display button on the monitor settings to see it.
The option is grey so im trying to set it as a custom resolution but all i get are unvalid errors. Current resolution must the limit of this relic of a laptop
I can guarantee you it can be done somehow since by default it allows for like a %20 downscaling vs its native resolution iirc. At worst you'll have to edit an entry in the registry. Search in there using "downscaling" as keyword.
There's a lot new. UI's still basic but redesigned mostly into an easier-on-the-eyes dark theme and has largely moved to floating panels - they really want you to use multiple monitors.
The biggest changes, besides the big move to CENTAG (and with them, the introduction of Canadians, French, East Germans, and Czechs as factions) are the introduction of SOPs and battleplans.
Without getting too in-depth, SOPs now allow you to change how units react to battlefield conditions. You can now tell them to do things like hold fire or only retreat when contacted.
Battleplans are essentially COAs for AI, making it much more dynamic.
Larger variety of support powers. Combat model has been significantly tweaked, so on so on.
Overall it's a lot more user-friendly and there shouldn't be so steep a learning curve.
Sounds pretty good, particularly the AI part since I cant really play on mp.
>You can now tell them to do things like hold fire or only retreat when contacted.
Sounds like recon was a suicide task before.
Not the other poster but, yes it was.
My HMMVs would engage enemy hinds and get BTFO'd lol
It was, particularly Soviet recon because they literally couldn't hide.
NATO's early-gen FLIR has been turned down now and there's an SOP option for mounted recon infantry carriers to "hide" when the infantry are dismounted - making them much harder to spot.
i do not like zone of control
I just wish this game (War in the East 2) didn't expect you to flip through a 600 page manual every time you want to figure out what an option or a number means. Have the developers ever heard of something called a tooltip?
What's the difference between running recond on day 1 vs 7? What's the downside of high intensity air operations? What effect do any of these support battalions have? What effect do any of these commander values have? What effect does splitting a battalion have? What effect does motorizing a division have? What's the difference between bombing a target on day 1 vs 5 or 7? What do any of these options even do????
Age does not apply. Lets put it this way. There are two types of gamers. Those who play games like WitE are superior beings, capable of achieving great things. Those who do not are subhumans, ignorant, slow witted and generally only useful for carrying out menial tasks.
What do we think about games like Strategic Command where 1 hex = 1 unit and there is no stacking?
>we
I dont really like the idea. Sounds like an arbitrary restriction and pushing is harder. I suppose it makes sense when you're trying to make the whole world playable like in their ww2 version but the result doesn't look particularly attractive given that Europe is a clusterfrick.
