That’s probably the darkest the game ever gets until late game really. Everything else is honestly so tone deaf it’s actually funny.
It was never intended to be a drama which is why it's more of a mystery/thriller.

The game literally allows you to dress Frank like Mega Man wearing undersized 6-year-old toddlerwear and appear that way in cutscenes. It's meant to be selectively funny playable B-movie depending on the player's decisions.
Dead Rising is not only a masterpiece in terms of gameplay its also a fascinating parody of American culture. Also Frank West acts more like a detective than a photo journalist, he even has a theme for when he's putting the pieces together.
DR1 was trying to do the same parody that George Romero already accomplished well over decades before it and Capcom is full of moron japs trying to emulate that (despite them denying this is a Dawn of the Dead ripoff).

Dead Rising 1 is easily the best in the series. The AI is indeed horrendous but you get used to it.

DR1's AI is abysmal but it's part of the difficulty at this point, and in fairness only adds to how fricking stressful and rewarding it is to rescue everyone.

Also its pretty hard and kind of slow on the begining but once you start to reach level 10 you will find joy mindlessly killing zombies and finding survivors, btw their IA sucks so you better get used to it fast.

In pc? yes.
If you frick up a case the game gives you the voice to either reload a save, start the game over, or keep playing until the end which will get you a different ending, but it gives you the chance to explore and get to know the mall without having to worry about the time limit. After that you can start over with your level and PP carried over.

What is great about Dead Rising is that it is an example of a AAA arcade style game that is meant to be replayed several times to improve your outcomes. This genre is pretty rare, and you have to appreciate what you get.
