/thread. Souls formula doesnt seem to work well with the open world element. There is a charm that can be found on old souls map design. ER is just big planes with enemies scattered around, which is not engaging. Only few dungeons have clever level design in ER.
I too revisit souls games from time to time and my favorites are DS1 because its comfy, and Bloodborne because it has unique artstyle and has the perfect amount of git gud and powerfantasy. I have beaten ER once, and Im not planning to go back ever again.
my issue with elden ring is that you'll never be at the intended level for the content. i left raya lucaria for later, came back after radhan and utterly steamrolled it.
skill based combat design doesn't work well in open world rpgs because stats trump skill completely

i mean, i liked my time with the game and the exploration has several kino moments. Stormveil and Leyndell are among the best dungeons in the series and the whole underground reveal was very well made.
i just think the game needed a smaller map and less mini dungeons (and maybe make those randomized like chalices so they're not a waste of time on next playthroughs). even the bosses are a case of less is more, there are several bosses you could outright remove and you'd have a more compelling experience

The gameplay and mechanics dont usually fit into this category because they usually get tweaked. Every game in the same IP generally reuse assets (around 10 -20%).
The problem is that 90% of the trailer is recycled assets. Literal enemies with a different head skin on top, or a new finisher for an attack, thats it. Makes the trailer feel like a fanmade tribute or some shit like that.

i worked at a company that did asset flipping games under so many dummy publishers to get past steam's greenlight limitations.
it used to be a really lucrative venture until so many started doing it (plus steam raising quality control) that now it is nearly impossible to sell games with any profit margin. it was remarkably easy to make a profit, there's a whole trick behind it using steam cards and reselling them through bots. my ex boss would've moved to mobile games but by the time he got the idea that market was so infested with shit it was impenetrable.

The three Dark Souls 2 DLCs are, combined, roughly the same size as the base game, were released in under 2 years and contain significantly better content than the base game. It was pretty clear that the legacy dungeons were the best part of Elden Ring. Given the option between 1 zone and 6 legacy dungeons or 3 zones and 3 legacy dungeons...I'd choose the former.

The Chariots get used like 3 times in the whole game. Which isn't a big deal when you think about it. Imagine any hazard limited to a single use, that's silly. And besides, each Chariot encounter is a little different. The pathways are different, the manner of dispatching them are different, and that one even added lava along the route.
Speaking of lava, dungeons have different environmental hazards too. Poison and rot swamps. And buttons on the ground that fire arrows. Or that big moving floor that lifts you into spikes.

Sure, Artorias was an amazing fight, Kalameet was pretty good, and Oolacile had an interesting atmosphere, but the guardian was too fricking easy (I've never died to him despite being underleveled or drunk), manus and his entire location just isn't fun, and you can get through the entire dlc in a flash. Better than The Old Hunters DLC? Ludacris.
My reaction to it was "damn, that's expensive". If it really is the size of Limgrave it would have to be much more densely packed with content to justify such a high price, I think.

Learn the difference between Expansion and DLC
The idea of expansion seams to have bean lost in time.
DLC is usually 1-2 hours of extra content. Expansions is usually around 50% or more of the base game.

honestly only problem with the original elden ring was the cut content like merchant kales questline and some of the endings being half-assed.
game was pretty good all throughout and dlc looks great. no need to be annoying, you were never gonna buy it anyways.
I aint paying full price for it, but considering Elden Ring came out like two years ago, and From were cranking out Souls games yearly for a while there, I would not be surprised if this is like a full Dark Souls game worth of content, at the very least.

don't get me wrong, I'm going to play and probably enjoy this but the derivative content is glaring and obvious for anyone who has been playing these games for the past decade. and yes I did see the added weapon classes look interesting, unarmed combat + sword throwing based class look like they might be fun.
