You can parry just about everything except grabs and flame based attacks. So his flurry rush and his Insta-death attack can be parried. You can even parry the shockwaves that pull you into the insta-death attack, but it makes more sense to just let it happen so you can kill him in one blow.

I wish only the generators made you play the minigame and that the flame jet obstacles just made you do something like Mac where you hit it once. Generators usually lead to more substantial platforming sections with a loop out of the area while flame jets are usually just hiding one room with a collectible and then you have to do the minigame again to get out.

nah gotta do them from scratch but you can quit after you do challenge doors and it saves it. but a lot of the zshield/flame/generators are kinda deep in there

Nah. The game also hates that move, tag team dodge/parry combos and tag team combo enders when it comes to score and im really unsure why.
The thing I dislike the most in this case is that you are punished massively for finishing a fight fast when it comes to overall score.

You need to kill with the tag team to trigger overkill and let you keep using them to juggle for higher score. Also make sure to always cash out a hit counter with your Special's with highest multiplier you can.

Honestly on my level selection reclear while doing all the spectra doors 90% of the fights ended up being S rank with an overall of "ASS" with score being A. and this is before the spectra doors made me realise parry, counter and jam overkills were even a thing since I never noticed other characters having attacks in the shop

I can say, however, that the XXYYY combo is basically a string of KH attacks, Chai's beam aerial beat combo is basically Ragnarok aimed down, and the second hit of YY is taken from KH2.

The raw test of your rhythm/defense, the fantastic song timed to the sequence, the framing of it, her health bar going back up every time she got angry, the scoring of it being unique compared to all other fights. I got SSS first try and it's one of the most satisfying vidya moments I've had in years. Best girl gets best fight.

I missed it because I was so excited about doing it perfectly on my first try that I sat back in my chair and missed the QTE as it popped up. Basically she hit the ground offscreen with a thud and Mac calls you a dick.
Fricking love these two, they're so endearing. Chai's a dumbass but it's not out of ignorance, it's just he's got a good heart and just lacks experience. Peppermint's rough around the edges but she's fighting for a good cause and comes to care for and respect Chai. Their banter is fun too.

Well Chai's abilities are totally accidental in this game, maybe the plot of the sequel is bad guys trying to weaponize it for themselves, so everyone involved is following Chai's rules

Smidge, the hint-fridge, makes a note of the world moving on beat now. It's probably moreso just "a broad area around him suddenly moves on beat". Which suggests he could frick with things by changing tracks on his own music player (and that could be a neat mechanic in the sequel, honestly).
I think the premise of Chai's powers is that the world is always moving to that rhythm, his defect just allows him to tap in to it. Some "beat of life" homosexualry.
I hope sfm/blender gays replicate the style for the porn. A lot of the 3d stuff all go for a realistic looks which makes anime models look like plastic or clay instead of doing cell shading or something.

Complete rework. Two different styles, both significantly streamlined (one that plays a melody if you play the same note twice in a row, the other stocks your last four notes and plays them when you perform, both have only three melodies since each note is attached to one). There's some cool new tools like Infernal Melody (an incentive to hit the monster to build up a meter that gives you access to a strong performance that gives a party-wide attack buff, would've solved World's issue with AUL being necessary on a meta Horn) and a weak but multi-hitting attack that re-ups all your melodies if you play all of your notes in sequence to get it online, but the core gameplay lacks that freeform melody-building gameplay of the previous few games. World had it perfect with the Setlist mechanic where you could stock multiple melodies at once and play some or all at your leisure. It really let you go between Offense & Support as fluidly as possible, and building combo strings that create multiple songs in the fewest inputs was incredibly fun since it varied by the Horn you were wielding.
It's not as good as Worldborne Horn or Valor HH in GU but I don't hate it outright like some do. I think it's at least more functional as a solo weapon than pre-GU games, although I could go back to 3rd gen and still enjoy my time with Horn just because of how the melodies work.
Admittedly I'm somewhat of a MH normie, I first started playing with Freedom Unite on PSP and have only played it casually up to world. But that's disheartening, I was thinking about picking up HH when my friends started playing (I normally main charge blade). It seemed pretty simplistic in the practice grounds, is it normally more complicated?
It's actually quite simple because they let it cancel basically all moves into each other as a means to build melodies easily. It can KO like Hammer but it actually focuses on Exhaust damage, so if you keep hitting the monster it'll get tired faster. If you play the notes of the Horn's melodies in a row and then press Perform you do an attack that will activate the effect of the melody at the end. It's a little easier or harder to get these off depending on the game. Rise is the easiest to use by far but I think GU or World is fine to learn it since Rise as I said reworked it heavily to be a much more aggressive weapon that buffs your team without having to find your moment to play (since the performances are long and leave you kind of open).

It's probably not really intended to be more than a "hey maybe this is a thing that could go somewhere". A potential sequel could literally not follow up on it at all and be fine. Romance doesn't need to be in every story, and one as ridiculous as HFR's story probably needs it even less, unless the romance is similarly goofy.

The weird thing about MS & Phantom Dust is that it seems like everybody there really fricking loves the game and simultaneously thinks making a new one would be a huge waste of money. That's probably why they did that remaster and put it out for free with functioning online servers, because that's probably the best they'll ever get the greenlight to do. It's a shame since even the director says he has sequel ideas he wants to get out.

That's what annoys me about it. They have no idea what they had. The scrapped remake footage seemed like such a bad idea and the remaster didn't even properly recreate the original game since there were major graphical effect oversights. If you compare footage it's easy to tell with environmental and skill effects. Next to zero marketing, too, for such an old game and then using it to gauge interest for a sequel. They set it up to fail, just like this game, only this game was new and stuck out based on where they happened to introduce it. It found its niche despite how they tried fricking it over
I only hope this inspires them to say frick it and commission a sequel with the original director and just go hands off to bolster their Japanese catalog
Just finished it today and it was honestly great. Been a while since I enjoyed a game from start to finish. Performance was also great, solid 4k120fps, with no DLSS. Thank frick that at least one developer knows how to optimize their game, because I'm genuinely getting tired of all these shit PC ports having stuttering issues and whatnot.

Same, but you can feel how much the forcing of the entire game to be on the beat limited their soundtrack. Every original track is 4/4 with the same BPM, and they had to get a band to cover that Flaming Lips track for Rekka's fight in order to fit it in properly. If I'm honest 1000000 & Invaders Must Die are the only out and out winners of the licensed music in terms of how they're used.
A tempo setting as a separate difficulty select would be sick though. Training Mode lets you up the tempo as a toggle.
Well there is a "faster song" switch, but even that's not really doing much besides just upping the BPM, and it does so uniformly.

How's the rank score tallied anyways? I often end a fight in S rank and get something like a B at the end. seems like special moves are really important because of their multiplier
yeah specials, your combo total, not gettin hit, parries(directional parries even more) and parry counters multiply it.
dying reduces rank at the end of a stage so dont do that. The trick to scoring high is using your reverb on either big specials that flat multiply your points, or using it on jam attacks to overkill enemies.

Xenogears wasn't really a massive seller. It did pretty well, but I recall the huge majority of that being in Japan. I don't think it's odd to not recognize it.
