It pisses me off how a legit 10/10 game a huge free content update and no one seems to care about it.

then a bunch of long custcene attacks that would have been interactive combos in a real game.

Not him, nor do I care about calling Hi-Fi Rush a flop or not. It's only the players playing at the moment on Steam. SteamDB has a separate estimate for owners numbers.
            https://steamdb.info/app/1817230/charts/
It's impossible to know for sure so different stat platforms make different estimates so you can take the most generous or the most pessimistic estimate depending on what stance you want to take. This is only an estimate of Steam owners too so it's only a part of the full picture.

Well as far as the devs are concerned, that 300K is what matters, and for something like HFR, that's damn good numbers. I'm hoping it'll set something of a precedent for more companies to take a risk like this to fully develop a game and just put it out there. It may be the shot in the arm the industry needs.

Genuinely forgot the update was today until I saw a thread earlier. It's not as substantial as people speculated from the 10 achievements being added but it seems fun, I'll try it later.

It's quite good. The combat has just enough depth in both the action and rhythm elements to be engaging, though if you have acumen in both genres it can be a little easy, which is probably why the update is focused on extra post-game modes.

DMC has more specials like different launchers, stinger, shuffle, drive.

Hi-Fi rush mainly only has combos. any move with different properties can't be used when ever you want to string together creative stuff like DMC.
everything is part of a combo string which means you'll be starting the same combo a lot and just going down different combo "paths" like a warriors game.

it's good that standard combo strings have a lot of paths but not good that that's 99% of your combat. the game needed directional specials with good instant utility.
another thing that sucks is a lot of your other utility is on shitty assists which suck and feel cheap to use. you just call a character in and they do a string of attacks and then cease to exist again.
they're all on cooldown timers so it feels like playing some shitty mobile RPG and what's worse the game has a lot of shitty artificial mechanics that force you to use them.

the worst thing about the combat has to be the fact that there's a huge obnoxious QTE prompt at the end of every combo. this shit does not need to exist and is an eyesore.

        Anonymous

Sounds like twewy, except they have utility pins. If I liked those games, will I like this game?

            [...]
I'd cosign that. Both have a similar style to them visually and the assist system does let you multi-task in a way that's like a simplified version of NEO's system, while HFR's rhythm mechanics is a more advanced version of how NEO gives you bonuses for dodging on-beat.

Cool, I'll give the game a shot then. Thanks, anons!

          t. moron who can't play rhythm games.

it's a rhythm game because there's at beat. you don't need a QTE if the music and animation show where the fricking beat is.
you don't need a fricking prompt because you're not a deaf moron who can't feel the rhythm or simply look at the animations.

plus Nero and Vergil's strictly timed mechanics in DMC are not even rhythm based yet they work. the game doesn't assume you're moron and put a huge fricking QTE on screen for them. these moronic devs would have ruined DMC with stupid invasive shit like that if they made it.

It's also on GP. Which is excellent for subscribers but good luck convincing Steamgays to pay full price for a GP game and good luck convincing them to play a game not on Steam. Timmy has been trying for years and all the free games in the world can't help him there.

It's like how Hades and Outer Wilds were Epic exclusives while in Early Access and barely got much attention, then they hit steam and consoles and suddenly they were huge and people couldn't stop talking about them. GP/Xbox is the same as EGS sadly. I think Starfield might end up the same way unless people can pirate it early.

Don’t forget it had the distinction of releasing in between other launches elsewhere that went so insanely poorly that it killed the studios making the other gamea.

Personally I think Hi-Fi Rush is great but it's just that Xbox+PC+GP day 1 is kind of a death sentence. You don't really hear about many day 1 GP success stories, Wo Long is already forgotten despite just having new DLC release too while the Nioh 2 gays still jerk off the game constantly and Jack's game gets brought up more. I think there's a good chance that P3R is going to end up the same way because it's very hard for people to justify paying $70 for a game that others are getting for $15.

GP kills a game’s momentum like poison kills rats if the Dev can’t keep up at least bimonthly talk worthy content.

If a game is on GP but isn’t frequently the host to some new content or event it gets buried by the gamepass games that do have those.

            Anonymous

Wo Long is just generally worse than Nioh 1&2 and SoP to be honest, plus it has a bad PC port despite Nioh 2 running great on PC and SoP getting some patches to run better after it launched. I feel worse for Wild Hearts which didn't have that sort of launch and isn't truly on GP (just a trial via EA's launcher) but was forgotten nearly instantly despite legitimately being the best not-MH hunting action game because of the truly bad PC port. I enjoyed my time with it but it ran like ass on my 3050 on upper-mid settings and crashed for no reason outside of combat.

SoP is the only Final Fantasy game I've given more than 2 hours in my life, I easily put it above Wo Long & Nioh 1. Can't say I blame you for assuming some sort of fanboyism though.

              Anonymous

I think the difference is partially there not being any sunk cost in Wo Long's case. People already bought SoP so they were more willing to shell out for the DLC so we actually had quite a few discussion threads about each DLC pack for SoP on here. But buying DLC for a game that you don't actually own is a much harder sell so people aren't interested in buying Wo Long's DLC and we don't even see people discussing it on here as a result.

I didn't either but I'm 130 hours deep into Street Fighter 6, it has a pull on me that's made it my #2 for now. Usually not interested in the big-budget games even from Japan, plus no PS5 so XVI isn't on my radar, so most of HFR's competition will be AA or indie titles; Bayo Origins, RE4make, Pizza Tower, & the Kirby remake are in my 8-8.5 range at the moment and I think a handful of games that aren't out yet could get close.

Both happen to be games with combat directors pulled from companies with a history of great action games (Masaaki Yamada, Ryota Suzuki) trying to combine that style of action with a different genre (Rhythm & RPG) and an understanding that a lot of people who pick the game up will be new to DMC-esque combat.

I'm not playing any more of the updates until they add Playstation button prompts, or at least the ability to swap to that "Four buttons in a diamond shape" thing Switch games have. I hate Xbox controllers.
Game's fantastic, but I can't get in the rhythm if I have to constantly keep remembering which button is which, and their insistence on keeping Denuvo shit in the game means I can't just mod different prompts in without some shitty .exe patcher that breaks every time they update the game.

      Anonymous

You don't have to be a master at juggling shit to do well. If you're not good at action games and also not great at keeping tempo it might be rough though because some of the midgame shit is pretty punishing and a few of the bossfights are straight-up nonsense if you're bad at both genres.

      Anonymous

hi-fi rush has more air combo strings than Dante and Nero.
what it lacks is more attacks utility attacks like Calibur.

        Anonymous

I think their idea is the all the assists are Air OK and provide utility but yeah, as Chai alone you're limited to your hop-over after the magnet pull in terms of midair utility, it's why the SPECTRA Door where you can't touch the ground is so tricky even fully upgraded.

      Anonymous

No. You have a grapple, multiple launchers, utility characters that can launch or continue aerial strings, and specials.
Oh and everything cancels into each other since you can dash or parry to interrupt a combo and start a new one, or summon a utility character during a combo.
The combat gets very complicated very quick, but it's not like dante in dmc5 constant weapon and style swapping complicated.

        Anonymous

but I always just do square triangle square triangle and square triangle triangle triangle or just square square square square and then I'm on the ground and I don't know what to do but repeat and mash assist

          Anonymous

I always try to mix up my combos. I usually do stuff like
          >dash -> light, light light, heavy -> dash or parry -> heavy -> heavy -> heavy -> beat combo before the last heavy attack -> summon an assist or do a super
          Or
          >light light -> dash -> heavy heavy -> light -> character assist -> beat combo -> grapple reset -> light light light -> heavy -> dash -> heavy -> heavy heavy light -> super

The game gives you plenty of options. Mashing frick you over when you try rhythm tower or play on hard.

The combat is super easy if you have any rhythm because of parries and jam attacks. Also Mac's charge attack is absurd crowd control.

I feel like threads about games like this are one of the few islands in this piss ocean that demonstrate that some people here still play games. Certainly I wouldn't have heard about it if it wasn't for these threads. It's really sad though that it's impossible to talk about mainstream games here. That being said, the people in the Final Fantasy threads that can actually write something also show signs that they care, even if they no longer play the games.

At this point, it's rather fair to be tired of gaming. If you're over 30 you've seen at least a decade of nearly all properties you cared about die.

              Anonymous

              >If you're over 30 you've seen at least a decade of nearly all properties you cared about die.

Might be a correlation to how shitty discussions have gotten in recent years. Zoomers grew up with the shitty versions of the games boomers loved growing up while also having to watch everyone shit on said new versions.

                Anonymous

I think the combative nature between people who like the new shitty thing against the people who like the old good thing is for the most part healthy. Because how else does a young person learn what came before and how things are better.

I think the problem that makes discussions shit here is that the people who are new to the Internet, regardless of their age, basically past around 2010 when basically the entire population got online showed up with the impression that the default behaviour of the Internet is to be shit and so they act out their worst impulses to be shit and it has a compounding effect that everyone's shit to each other. Whereas the people who were around before 2010 learned to some degree that you don't feed the troll and you ignored people who were just bad actors or disingenuous. And now because the majority cannot ignore anybody being disingenuous, it creates this feedback loop that reinforces the notion that people are supposed to be shit, when before, discussion was good because there was this notion that the person who hated something hated it for good reasons or wanted to love it, there was this thing in common between people who disagreed. And without that common sense of care, when you just by default hate the person you're talking to, you can't talk about anything.

It also doesn't help that the moderation cannot (or will not) do anything about the repugnant shitty people who spend their entire lives being shit here. It's a clear downside to being anonymous. It was fine being anonymous when everyone wanted to belong to a community; it's bad being anonymous when people are here strictly to be shit.

fully agreed, the bad faith shitposting is getting too tiresome, but at the same time I'd rather have made-up negative opinions (like we see with every big release like FF16 recently) than squeaky-clean corpo wiener-sucking like on gaming subreddits

This isn't a dub. EN voice acting is the original, in this case, because the director recorded the scratch audio for the entire game himself during development. That's why all the cutscenes are animated to the English voices. Some of it was left in because the devs liked it.

If there's nobody willing to say it in six months, then I will: "Hi-Fi Rush" is an awful title. Loved the game, but I have no clue what the point of the title is and it doesn't really get across what the game is either. To me it reads like a pre-production title Johannes put together to get across the game's overall vibe that they never got around to changing, like Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy.

And HFR is easy even on Hard, only things that suck is fire trails on the ground not going away completely or the Samurai dudes. Final phase Kale is a Black person too but that's par for final bosses.

First BPM Rush run, 170BPM is cancerous and the hardest stage IMO; you have a big blue tank, a green sword & shield guy, and a flame boxer on the field at all times. 200BPM was oddly easy, possibly because I built a ton of batteries in it very quickly for some reason and was able to High Pitch Punch into Peppermint air combo into magnet backstab ender over and over. I think I can do better, I'm just rusty after months away.

Samurai & Kale are based for actually making you parry on the off-beat.

        Why did you post this?

          Anonymous

Because the idea that rhythm and action games don't go together when the fun is learning fricking boss patterns, AUDIO cues and maximizing combos that utilize timing aren't very antithetical at all. In fact they usually go hand in hand.

I am high, anon. What on Earth did you post as well? I do not understand how they pertain to rhythym.
You are right, though. It can be hard for gameplay and rhythym to come together for someone whose not in the right mindset, but that doesn't mean the entire subgenre should be written off.

              Anonymous

audio cues, timing and execution are very much the same. call it reductive, but the only difference between playing/executing well in a hard action game and a rhythm game is APM, which the latter has a higher demand for most of the time. Where as action games have a character you pilot and maneuver that has recovery and startup frame to accoutn for and hitboxes etc.

If anything an action game is an easier version of a rhythm game, this is why people call Sekiro a rhythm game all the fricking time, they're basically right except you don't fight to a set beat.

                Anonymous

                >You don't fight to a set beat.
You fight to the beat of the swords.

Games are different to everybody. I struggle with Rhythym games and have no care for Sport Games, but give me an Aircraft Simulator or something like Foxhole and I'm off. I wish to try this game, but I need to track down a physical copy.

For me it was like a 8, I can't say much negative things about the game but the gameplay got quite repetitive a couple levels after getting Korisca
Maybe if I played less games I'd like it way more, it lacked a form of novelty or something for me idk why

      Anonymous

really?I think that's where the game picks back up honestly, where it drags is post-Rekka to after Korsica's shitty QTE fight. The lead-up to Korsica is mind-numbingly long and then you're hit with a non-traditional boss fight after being cucked out of a real fight with the Jojo dude. After Korisca you get a relatively short level and a half for Mimosa and then it's a basically a straight shot to the end of the game.

        Anonymous

Korsica fight is excellent though. One of the best original tracks in the game, perfect pacing, great way to introduce dodges to the parry sequences, top banter. One of my favorite bosses in years, though Roquefort & Kale were really great as far as traditional bosses go, barring the slow pace of Kale's second phase.

          Anonymous

The Korsica fight is fun for sure and one of the coolest momenta in the game. But its placement in the story is awfully paced. There is way too long of an stretch without any proper traditional boss fights, and it makes the game drag a bit

Lmao. The combat is broken with ally spam. There is no difference in combos. You could just end up spamming 2 combos with the same result. Game also has alot of unskipable dialogues and cutscenes which make the replayvalue alot worse.

    It's a 7,5/10. I still had a good time with it.

you probably played with at least a decent sense of rhythm or the ally spam stuff wouldn’t have been working out for you as well. If you’re not hitting beats the game isn’t afraid to leave you thirsty for meter in order to spam those attacks.

Watch someone with NPC rhythm try. It’s fricking astounding how this game can really show you a surprising amount of people can’t hold a rhythm for more than short bursts.

    > There's a main female heroine that is smarter and/or more clever than him (maybe that red hair girl, but I'm thinking it's the brown girl). And she has to be a Mary Sue which is awesome at anything she does

I'm somewhat impressed they didn't put in a completely black girl/guy that was the super genius 'scientist' or someshit, unless that's what they made that girl be.

almost right, except the heroine gets dabbed on by the stupid male lead multiple times and eventually warms up to him

It's all of that but the MC is the literal personification of the chad with 4 IQ meme. All the characters have their own dumb moments. There's a little bit of yuri fanservice on the brown girl being into the red head mommy. MC is shit on because he IS an idiot but also equally praised for getting the job done.

will never not tilt me, the game was almost perfect I had somehow deluded myself into thinking chai/mint was a thing, so the piece of shit ending credits shit had me in a sour mood for days

if it helps, those credits were outsourced and clearly not actually checked by the devs. Every single fricking character's heights are wrong in it.

nah dude it's almost certainly intentionally written by.the director/writer, they had those weird out of place voice lines in korsica's debut mission and stuff too

someone in previous stated that the devs talked about yuri and shipping stuff via twitter posts that are now deleted. I wish someone could recall what they said. Wayback machine doesn't help.

      >Lead character is clumsy and/or a moron (unless it's not that white dude)
He's both, but he hits that sweet spot of "dork who's still good at what he does.
      > There's a main female heroine that is smarter and/or more clever than him (maybe that red hair girl, but I'm thinking it's the brown girl).
      Close, but
      >And she has to be a Mary Sue which is awesome at anything she does
Peppermint has a pretty good dynamic with him where while she gets frustrated with Chai's bullshit, she can't deny that what he's doing IS working better than what she does.
The red haired girl is far more competent unless you look at what her password was as chief of security but she's a lot nicer towards Chai since she's in her early 30s and is generally pretty grateful for all Chai does.

It may be a 10/10 game, but it appeals to a minuscule part of the population because rhythm games are a minuscule niche.

If you really want to get gud you have to practice. Clear what you can and just play daily. Instead of launching once, getting dunked on and leaving forever.

Thanks but I played the game a lot when it came out, I have no rhythm. I couldn't S rank a single battle after numerous playthroughs, my friend S ranked almost the entire the first chapter for his first try.

I struggled at first with an xbox controller, then I switched to KB/M controls and started tapping the mouse buttons to the beat.
Idk if it's the sound of the mouse clicking or it being easier to tap with pointer/middle finger, but it allowed me to move from mostly A/B to A/S.

Oh I'm not trying to be good, I just try to pass but it is too hard for me. I could only do the hard difficulty and the extra rooms by abusing the assists after days of trying. I could never beat the tower, not even floor 9. In fact the first time I played the game on easy I died several times on the first flying bot section from almost max life (where you can't progress until you can repeat the pattern). So not being able to even finish the arcade on easy is no surprise. I'm almost always D for rhythm, sometimes barely C.
I was never good in anything but not being able to do the fundamentals of the game at all depresses the hell out of me.

I'm confused about something, the only human part Rochefort and Kale have is their heads? The rest is robotic? Like Robocop?

Correct. Roquefort is even more robotic than Kale though, even his "human" skull seems pretty decked out with machinery.
