I played HFR on LSD like three days ago after getting it on sale and found God. Literally one of the best games I've ever played in my whole life and I'm not joking.
The gameplay and level design is build around the music playing in each stage to get you into the beat, so that by the time you start fighting enemies it feels like you just started jamming with the band as they recorded the music with the main character as your instrument.
Fun, good combat, amazing visuals, great soundtrack, genuinely funny writing and likable characters. Easy GOTY 2023.
Could not recommend this game highly enough for anyone interested.

It's like any other input combo brawler but you are most effective while pressing buttons to the best of the music.

honestly? nothing. its more like a greatest hits of weird cult PS2 games from japan with the action combat, the rhythm game and a lot of platforming as well. none of these elements are especially 10/10 but if you think canceling dashes into attacks on the beat of the background music in order to go through the hallways between fights much faster is cool instead of annoying you will probably really like this game.
the combat is more advanced then something like killer is dead or oneechanbara but its definitely a level below a dmc or ninja gaiden because the rhythm mechanics are filling in the blanks. your attacks always come out on the beat even if you aren't pressing but hitting on the beat rewards you with more damage and also the meter you spend on the more interesting parts of your movelist that give the combat a lot of its depth.
the closest I have to an actual complaint is that theres no hard lock on but the grappling hook and the auto lock have done a really good job of not fricking me over and the moves are more about spacing and knowing when to dodge or hit then the kind of precise inputs that would really want a hard lock so its fine. a lot of skippable tutorials as well because they really wanted to ensure even stupid little kids could wrap their heads around this combo of two extremely demanding genres
TLDR: just play the first level on hard and if you aren't feeling it refund it

Having played Hi-Fi on PC putting it on Switch is probably the best decision they've made with the game. Every game that gets ported to Switch prints money.

honestly? nothing. its more like a greatest hits of weird cult PS2 games from japan with the action combat, the rhythm game and a lot of platforming as well. none of these elements are especially 10/10 but if you think canceling dashes into attacks on the beat of the background music in order to go through the hallways between fights much faster is cool instead of annoying you will probably really like this game.
the combat is more advanced then something like killer is dead or oneechanbara but its definitely a level below a dmc or ninja gaiden because the rhythm mechanics are filling in the blanks. your attacks always come out on the beat even if you aren't pressing but hitting on the beat rewards you with more damage and also the meter you spend on the more interesting parts of your movelist that give the combat a lot of its depth.
the closest I have to an actual complaint is that theres no hard lock on but the grappling hook and the auto lock have done a really good job of not fricking me over and the moves are more about spacing and knowing when to dodge or hit then the kind of precise inputs that would really want a hard lock so its fine. a lot of skippable tutorials as well because they really wanted to ensure even stupid little kids could wrap their heads around this combo of two extremely demanding genres
TLDR: just play the first level on hard and if you aren't feeling it refund it
