Ultima III is a good simple no-frills experience that lets you customize your own party and have a very archetypal CRPG adventure. Ultima IV is the birth of the "dialogue tree" with the slightly more involved story and moral underpinnings. Ultima V expands on this concept, lengthening the dialogue and challenging the moral precepts developed in the previous game.

It IS a faux pas to ask why no one replied to your thread on the third slowest board on the site.

They're not but JRPGs take influence from them, shared history

Wrong. Wizardry in picrel is a JRPG adaptation of Wizardry. The Ultima games released for NES are also JRPGs.

If you're not used to the challenge of CRPGs then you might want to look into some of the Japanese console versions of those games, which ease up the interface and the difficulty a little bit. The vast majority of console Japanese Wizardry have the option to be played in English in their options menu.

No one ever used to call them "JRPG".

Sorry for the phrasing I didn't mean to imply they were JRPGs or whatever, I was explaining my interest in them as being because of my interest in JRPGs. That being said I kinda don't care

you gotta play ALL +-20 Wizardry, Ultimas and Dragon Quests or you lose your jrpg weeb card, these are the rules.

You play them until 1983-1984. Japan started to attempt normal RPGs (so not action) themselves around that time instead of playing import machines or ports for RPGs. Anon was/is posting about one of them (Mugen no Shinzō) of which the first 2 games were quite influential for Japanese developers.

Ultima will be too complex for your brain. Play Wizardry Llylgamyn Saga on PS1 or SFC. By the way, you should contemplate why and how these concepts were worked into every RPG to follow.

Just get whatever PC versions of the first games in those series. Enjoy gaming history anon.

Play Wizardry 1~3, they are pretty good. There is a good remake for PS1 made by the Japaneses. The OST is amazing.
4 is my favorite. While it's not the hardest rpg, it's among them. For 5, I'd recommend the SNES one. 6, 7 and 8 you must play the PC version since you can carry the same party over the games, so finishing 8 with the party you started in 6 is unique.
As for Ultima, I have only played the GOg version. iirc PC-98(or 88) has a nice looking port of the first Ultima.

Does the PS1 collection of wizardry 1-3 let you transfer characters into 2 and play as their descendants in 3? I always thought that was a really cool feature, even though my only experience is barely fooling around for a bit in Wiz 1.

What version do you recommend for 4?

        >PS1 collection of wizardry 1-3 let you transfer characters into 2
Yes. Unlike the SNES version, it keep the right order (the SNES version, Wizardry 2 is in fact the third game)

        >What version do you recommend for 4?
You can play the PS1 version. It allows you to either play a remix of it or the original game.

Keep in mind that I do not know if there is some fantraslation, but the games allow you to change almost 90% of the gameplay to English in option menu, so you will have no problem in playing them.
However, I don't know if the remix has English version since they did add new stuff. Still, you can give it a try and see if they the original version for Wiz 4 on PS1 has everything in English.

The menus to change languages, for example.

The only thing missing is the description of the spells since they were not included in the earlier versions so you need to look them up in the manual.

Cool, thanks for the info. Been meaning to give these games a try for a while.

If you have trouble learning how to start these games, watch some of a video. Don't spoil the whole game, just get an idea of what to do to get going. Also read the manual and write down keyboard commands.

The trouble is in picking which of the versions are the best ones. There's like 10 for each Ultima and some seem to be entirely different games. What are the nicest versions of early Ultimas that can be easily run on a modern PC? This thread is mostly just snarky comments, seems like nobody can actually answer the question. Ask an FF fan this question, he'll not only tell you the best versions of FFs he'll have a week long fight about it. Ultima, not so much, I guess nobody plays them

what do you mean? the answers are fricking easy. no zoomer is going to play a text parser and keyword game with a hunger system on the apple 2.
        >ultima 4
        you want xu4.
        >ultima 5
you want the original or the one in lazarus.
        >ultima 6
        original is fine.
        >ultima 7
you want exult especially for keyring.
        >underworld
play the original, mouselook if you need it.
all of them will run. 4-7 are the essential games. are you satisfied. did i fulfill your spoon feeding needs? you wont last a second in these games if you need constant information fed to you like a little baby.

          >are you satisfied
Obviously not because you started with 4. Would an FF fan start listing best versions with 4 and finish at 7? And then leave a snarky remark about how "hardcore" of a gamer he is because he played some FF games but not all?

i shall not be answering such a moronic question as to why akalabeth is not necessary to play. your generation is a disgrace and should be shamed off the internet.

            >Obviously not because you started with 4.
you want some sort of dawn of souls for ultima 1? or more like, some UI like they do for dorf fort? I think it might miss the point of playing u1 in the first place but at the same time I wonder if it even exists.

This is the absolute worst advise. Lazarus is trash. Mouselook on Underworld? Do you even like games? You don't even need to move the camera up and down ever. You probably like exult as well, which is also trash.

They may not be the prettiest versions, but the gog versions of Ultima all run fine without patches. In Ultima 2, there's a part where you need to slow down the game to land a rocket, but that's about it. I played through all of them over the last year and a half and can confirm they can be completed. Keep it simple and get the gog versions. If you like them, try other versions. The controls on these games feel weird, but give it about 15 minutes and they'll feel fine. These games seem overwhelming, but once you play a while and get a feel, you'll see they aren't complex at all. Make sure you give them a real chance though. Glad a zoomer is interested.

Avoid SNES version. They changed the order, 3 is 2 and 2 is 3.

Did I "not really beat the game" if I didn't delete my party when they wiped on the ps1 version? Did people really put up with that shit in 1980 instead of just ripping out their floppy?

      Anonymous

are you asking if tech savvy adults didnt back up their saves to other floppies? the answer is always yes. wizardry 4 tried to mitigate this with its save functioning in different way.
