More or less this. The others are either too jank from being such an unproven genre or mired by modern gaming aesthetics.

If you GOTTA get more hitman they're not terrible, but 3, BM, and C are equally top tier.

        >Absolution could be a pretty nice blueprint for their new 007 game
The story and scope of the last trilogy is straight up a Bond story, replace 47 with 007 and nothing even feels out of place.

With all the 007 references in it, I think you might be right. Still, I must say that I really enjoyed seeing 47 in bright, sunny locales, and Bond would have far more shootouts. I don't think I've seen a dedicated rampage mission yet, haven't played 3 though

I'm more surprised it took more than 2 decades fro them to grab the 007 license as the gameplay of the games is probably the cloest thing we could ever get as a 007 game when the actual 007 games were literally call of duty clones.

The World of Assassination trilogy has more MI references than 007. And that's a good thing.

This problem was present even in Silent Assassin. The Hidden Valley level in particular.
The real offender is that you need to use instinct to bypass certain moments, and it's downright broken on the higher difficulties because it doesn't regenerate.

Silent Assassin bit date but worth a play I guess
Contracts worth a play for sure
    Blood Money a must play
Absolution not my cup of tea. If you go in with the expectation of a linear stealth game and not the deep Hitman sandbox it's playable. I can see how people like it.
    1 2016 is good
    2 2018 is good
    3 2020 is good

TLDR they're all playable. Absolution your mileage may vary.

If I'm an autist who feels a compelling need to understand the story in an assassination game, can I just start with Hitman (2016) and skip all the earlier games? Or do I need to start with Codename 47 and work forward through all of them.

        Anonymous

You can start with either. Hitman isn't really known for its story tbqh, and I'm a huge story autist too.
It's like asking "should I start with Christopher Nolan's Batman or Tim Burton's Batman to understand the story?" They're both kinda the same story but different. You can start with either.
There's references you wouldn't understand in Hitman 2016 if you didn't play earlier titles, but they're still not necessary imho. Hitman 2016 is like a relaunch for the series.

That being said, I do recommend the earlier Hitman games. They're very good, especially Blood Money.

On one hand, the story between series entries is a bit all over the place and not a lot of them are consequential to the next one. But on the other hand, C47 is the only one that really tells the story of how 47 came to be. If you're a complete lore autist, you might need to visit C47 to see why there even is a 47. Contracts remakes some missions and the TM trilogy references it, but they don't really tell you the full story. Other than that nothing really interesting happens in the other games lore-wise, the one in 2SA is hardly referenced anymore and Contracts is just a flashback montage

Thanks bros. I played Codename 47 back when it released but I remember absolutely nothing about it because I think it filtered me in some capacity. I'll probably just take a deep dive from the start then.

Contracts is a partial-remake of the first two, so start there. Then Blood Money and finally 2020 since it includes 2016 and 2018 levels. All the same content and then some, unified progression, but no panties.

You're a science experiment by an eastern european mad scientist who combined the DNA of five donors to create someone with perfect genes, and then brainwashed and tortured the kid for most of their early life to purge anything resembling emotion or empathy from him, and then trained him to be an expert in every subject under the sun.
47 eventually gets out on his own and joins the super secret global assassination agency because he's the best and its all he knows. Gets a handler with a sexy ass voice to ASMR him on missions, and then goes on a series of globe trotting adventures taking out high profile targets by staging elaborate accidents and escaping unseen.

Blood money for classic hitman, with small to medium sized maps.

HITMAN 1, 2 or 3 (basically same game with different maps) for large assassination maps, there are a couple of things you can do in each map, but if you play too many maps map to back it can get tedious.

Any other non absolution game in the franchise if you want an experience similar to blood money, but maybe a little less polished.

The fricking DLC system is convoluted as shit and the semi always online system is also annoying. Imo if it weren't for these 2 issues Hitman would've been much more popular.
Regardless of these issues Nu-Hitman is genuinely great and from what I can tell all 3 games+ DLCs are just 60€ right now. That's absolutely worth it. If youre unsure just download the Hitman 2 demo, which is the first mission of Hitman 2 (there's also the Hitman 1 demo which is less enjoyable albeit worth a playthrough)

Hitman Absolution is meh, but might be enjoyable. i enjoyed it (although I wasn't Hitman fan prior to that)

Blood Money is old but still great. I bought it after playing Hitman 1 and still had a lot of fun, even without any nostalgia.

Anything prior to that might feel to dated for you. I personally dropped Silent Assassin.

Yes the Trilogy is cracked, but you can't unlock anything. You'll have to download a save file.

Is the Hitman 2 port better than 2016 ?
I downloaded H2's demo and it ran way better than 2016 does on my machine, but it also took place in Bumfrick Nowhere Kiwiland with almost no npcs so I'm skeptical if it will be worth it to buy it just to end up refunding it when Miami or Mumbai makes my computer slow down to 5fps.

          >Is the Hitman 2 port better than 2016 ?
Maybe marginally? I've never noticed or heard anything about the newer Hitmans running much better than the first one, although it's been a while since I played. In your case it's probably the fact that the H2 demo is simply less crowded than the H1 demo, although I might be wrong.

Play the WoA trilogy ASAP before they shut down the servers and they are lost in time like tears in rain. If you like them and want more, and don't mind eurojank in exchange for atmosphere and SOVL, play the following:

All of BM, Contracts and SA.
The following missions from C47: traditions of the trade, the massacre and cheng chau fish restaurant, the lee hong assassination. Use cheats to skip the remainder of C47 (trust me).

A lot of people don't like Colorado because the whole mission takes place in a restricted area, and every single NPC has a gun. This makes doing anything at all in that mission extremely difficult, and Silent Assassin is nigh impossible unless you follow the speedrun strategy

Not him but I'd give Colorado a 6/10.
Unless I missed it it didn't seem to have as much choice as other levels. The House wasn't as interesting to explore as Beldingford Manor or the English Estate in nuHitman 3. Not much elevation in the level aside from the House itself. I dunno, just didn't have as much character and story telling as other levels. IIRC you had to eliminate quite a few people so it felt like an online mission somebody made.

Who the frick knows. There's a gorillion versions because of the fricked up architecture that spans the three games. Also, every limitation of Hitman 2016 could never be fixed in the two other games because of the need to support the previously released levels.

        >"HITMAN 3 is the best place to play every game in the World of Assassination trilogy. If you’ve already played HITMAN 2 on Steam, the locations that you can access in that game will be converted into an ‘Access Pass’ for HITMAN 3 when you buy the latest game. The Access Pass DLCs will be applied to your account and the locations will be available and ready to play from the first time you launch the game."

the store page says this, but it doesn't say anything about keeping hitman 1's levels since i only have that game's levels in 2. The wording's all really vague and seems to intentionally leave out info to cause confusion.

How can new Hitman games innovate on the formula? The last 2 games have largely just been map packs of 2016 with some improvements here and there

Personally I would love it if they can pull off dialogue as part of the manipulations. Like for example smooth talking your way out of a hairy situation by saying you're a dumb new recruit, using a commander disguise to gaslight rookies to be suspicious of their own, things like that
Of course the UI would be a problem and can take you out of the game, so I'd be totally fine if they just stay where they are and don't fix what isn't broken

    wtf was Absolution's plot?

    >latex nuns
    >totally out of place sexual shit like the guy asking why he's hard when he's dying
    >47 tries to choke some gigantic guy with piano wire and gets btfo
    >he later snaps said guy's neck in full view of hundreds of people
    >has to protect some girl so he does this by dumping her in some orphanage
    >she gets kidnapped because she was put into some orphanage
    >she has a magic USB drive that makes her stronger than 6 fully armed guards at once despite having the build of a preteen girl
    >somehow this is more valuable to the agency than a gun
    >some guy just goes about his life coated in bird shit, 47 decides to just give him his fancy guns for info

Dont forget you had the moron cowboy who murders a waitress to frame 47, then decides to burn down his hotel to kill 47, even though he had him unconscious right in front of him. None of it makes sense and no one has logical motivations. Its painful to listen to the plot.

and Absolution's plot was a shitshow. The chicago gangster cowboy villains should've tipped you off even before the latex nun bodyguards did; that's some good finnish humor right there.

You have the hindsight of knowing who he is and what he looks like. In his world he's a ghost and only diana and a few others know/knew what he looked like. You see the barcode and think HITMAN others might not even be able to tell what it is or just think its some random tattoo.

I always did think it was funny 47 was designed to be able to blend into a crowd and be unmemorable, and then you see this 6'2" brick shithouse with a bald head, identifying tattoo, and a stare that can see through walls.
But that's just the fun of hitman, where you can see a guy go behind some boxes, hear a coin drop, send your buddy to check it out, and then be not at all suspicious when he returns 3 inches taller, bald, and telling you he makes a baklava that's to DIE for in a creepy monotone voice that could only belong to a robot lacking human emotion trained to kill.

All of them except Absolution. Start with Blood Money, then play Contracts if you want more of the same but more challenging, or the nu-trilogy if you want something more modern and accessible. Only play Silent Assassin if you love Blood Money and Contracts, it has kino atmosphere but it’s even more punishing than Contracts with some janky AI in parts. Then play Codename 47 if you want something even jankier but with some kino levels still.

Just bought the trilogy and have been trying to achieve all silent assassin suit only on my first playthrough. Sucks that certain things like lethal poison and lockpicks are locked behind mastery levels. Otherwise, its a really fun and challenging experience.

      Anonymous

SA/SO is the true way to play the game but your first experience should be a casual run. You don't know the maps and target's routines yet. I would recommend casual, then SASO any loadout (not hard, there are some really cheap tools in the game), then SASO master difficulty default loadout default start location. If you want to go one step further you can do no KOs and no guns as well but that gets into deeply autistic territory.

        Anonymous

        >SA/SO is the true way to play the game

Hate this meme. When did this become the standard? 47s whole shtick is that hes a chameleon and blends in and gets into places with outfits. Suit only is just a stupid challenge and probably the reason this shit has gone more into 007 territory than hitman.

There is no good way to balance disguises, they either make the game trivially easy or you have the paranoid schizophrenic guards of H2:SA who open fire if you walk a bit too quickly. Disguises are fine for novelty and for exploring a level but 'beating' the game means SASO on every level, in my opinion. It has been the tradition from the beginning.

            Anonymous

            >It has been the tradition from the beginning.
            not him but I disagree
the early games REQUIRE a disguise if you wanted a good rank. even Silent Assassin, which introduced the Silent Assassin rank

            Anonymous

Not every disguise is foolproof, and you've got noticers all over the level. Not to mention knocking someone out and stealing their clothes opens up an opportunity for things to go sideways.
I think everyone has misjudged the patrol patterns and had someone walk in as your dragging a body across the floor and having to go into "containment mode" which usually turns into me saying "If I can't have five stars I want no stars."

Penelope and Sean both go into the house and give you clean opportunities. You have to shoot the hay bale to kill Maya otherwise she's a nightmare. Ezra can be tricky and requires knocking a few dudes out to be safe. Bangkok is now the hardest to SASO because they patched out the default exit for some reason, the only exit is guarded by multiple cops.

Hitman Codename 47 is only worth watching an LP of at this point
Silent Assassin is good, people say it's buggy because of one mission and not understanding the suspicion mechanics, although it can be ballbustingly unfun forcing you to walk everywhere if you're not an autist
Contracts is literally the perfect game, the moody atmosphere fits the fact 47 is supposed to be a grim less-than-human killer and not some homosexual 007 wannabe, it's also got a nice balance between difficulty with suspicion and shit like that, you can run but if you bump guards you'll be detected
Blood Money is the most approachable and easiest in the franchise, that's why people enjoy it. You can literally sprint around the map and run circles around guards and they'll never discover your disguise unless you're high notoriety, its the last good Hitman game before it turned into detection rings and meters and all that homosexual shit
    Absolution should be avoided
nu-Hitman reboot games are dogshit if you're a proper fan but they're playable games if you're not attached to the previous franchise and how it has been entirely pissed on completely, plus if you want a James Bond game then you've come to the right place - beware the shitty service model and how they pretty much spell everything out for you including challenges, leaving no discovery for your own person, it's more or less a fricking job tier game where you complete missions over and over again just to watch numbers go up and not because you enjoy that particular level or the gameplay, if that's your thing you're going to love it

They should penalize breaking open doors with a crowbar. Either more noise or set off an alarm if someone finds the broken lock.

Numan is good. Here's the flowchart you need if you want to get everything from all three games with hitman 3. It's 70 dollars on sale right now but for the amount of content you get it's well worth it. I got it on the summer sale and already have over 24 hours in it and am barely halfway through the first hitman's campaign

This flowchart is moronic. It should go like this
      >Do you own Hitman 1 and 2 on Steam?
      >No
      >buy them from key sites because it is 100x cheaper than buying them as addons for Hitman 3 (unless the original games are re on sale)
      >make sure it's Hitman 2 Gold and Hitman 2016 GOTY
      >redeem them on steam
      >then buy Hitman 3 standard edition
      >no you don't want the deluxe edition
      >just launch hitman 3 and everything will work automagically.

    >hitman thread
    >new how not to play hitman comes out too
This must be a sign for me to buy Hitman 3
