It's the reason the genre is now called "Hollowlike", what do you think?

      Anonymous

Hollowlike specifically refers to the emerging subsubgenre of metroidvanias themed around Hollow Knight with similar artstyle

It's the best metroidvania ever made if you have any standards and understand that Super Metroid is better than Symphony of the Night.

Yes, more so if you like Metrovanias, Dark Souls, Platformsers, adventurer games, atmosphere and subtle storytelling/worldbuilding. Or rather, think you would like them. I bought it on my ps4 and steam so that should tell you something.

Not liking something because is "Reddit" is arguably more Reddit. You're even more obsessed with the opinions other people have on media than simply not giving a shit.

it's a high quality title. good art direction, play control and atmosphere. the mumbles of the characters foreshadows the utter lack of communication on the part of the devs. the game works on many levels

Best Metroidvania: big map, good combat/bosses, good artstyle, good lore, good music, etc.

Maybe Blasphemous if you really want the souls shit

i would understand arguing for the other titles, but blasphemous is basically directly worse than HK in nearly every department
unless you think excessive hitstop somehow makes the combat weighty, in which case i'd see how one would prefer blasphemous' shitty slashes

I had issues with Blasphemous but it was still less frustrating to me than HK.

HK baits you with good/fun parts followed by wandering and death loops. Blasphemous was a consistent experience and "getting gud" felt more earned.

              >death loop
HK is relatively pretty forgiving and doesnt try to hole you into death loops. if you keep dying then just go somewhere else homie
              >wandering
i think youre probably at your own fault for not figuring out where to go or looking somewhere else

That aside, if you think blasphemous' death runs or potential death loops arent as poorly designed then i dont know what to say. Blasphemous is the game with several things that take way too fricking long for a cutscene like several elevators that take away your controls and take forever to move up once you hit their bell. Blasphemous is the game with 9999 slowly moving platforms where you cant do anything but wait. Blasphemous is the game where you can instantly die to something cheap because instakill spikes.
I also dont know how you could find "gitting gud" more interesting in blasphemous, because blasphemous is an insanely shallow braindead easy game for the combat with next to no player expression where everyone fights majority of boss attacks in the exact same way, and where the player moveset is extremely stiff and bland with nothing cool other than the dash slash. You wont get anything dynamism that compares to, for example, repeatedly staggering hornet 2 - lost kin to death with accurate spells and constant slashes

You sound like you enjoy all the "pixel perfect blocking/atttacking" types of stuff. That's what I hated most about HK's gameplay. That peaked for me at the Mantis Lords fight and it got shittier and more overblown after that. I also felt the damage you suffered never got better, despite how many masks or charms you get.

Metroid Dread was so smooth in the controls department that I gave it a pass but I'm a casual at best. I don't play video games to give myself premature arthritis. Most of the games I play consistently are survival horror, JRPGs, or the Metroid series. I'd like to finish SOTN someday.

                >píxel perfect blocking/clashing
that is a super side-side-side-side mechanic in hk that youre not even supposed to actively rely on
if you for some reason tried to do it constantly instead of realising its primarily for doing it by accident / against an attack youre already very used to / an attack that is inherently much easier to parry due to its general hitbox and duration / when theres no other choice, then yeah i could see it being frustrating
With that said, i do agree the mechanic would be directly better if it was just meant to be reliable across the board. In particular the best two bosses in the game (pure vessel and NKG) have satisfying parriable attacks that are so much easier to parry than almost anything else in the game
                >the damage you suffered never got better
you can get charms that massively increase your heal power, or make you heal safer/grant you passive healing. and of course you can get lots of bonus masks

In both of these departments i think you'd prefer silksong's moveset. Silksong has a more proper parry-counter attack move that works just like hornet 2's own parry, and its healing is overall more dynamic so i assume (assume) ((assume)) it will have more potential in terms of damage mitigation

I might try it again someday. But my negative memories make that game feel like a black hole for my time. I could have finished several other games during the time I spent on HK

OTOH, I ended up playing over 150 hours of Dread not counting boss rush because I love it so much

i got mad with dread's cutscenes/cinematics mid battle for some bossfights
if you want a metroid-like that has the antithesis of death-loops and death-runs you could try the first Ori game. it lets you make your own checkpoints with energy

Ori 1 is brilliant in general, the only bad part of it is the early game combat being just click spam. but once you get some upgrades it gets progressively more kino

I'm glad you liked HK. I just didn't have that magic for me

Maybe Zero Mission and Super Metroid spoiled me. Maybe I'm a casual. It's probably a combination of both of those. HK just felt like an exercise in tedium and the ending made me never want to revisit such a dreary world

its extremely good and nobody else than Ganker shits on it
it has the best interconnection and non-linearity in the genre once it reaches the part where it opens up, and best middle-lategame combat in the genre.
extremely good main quest as in, including the Dream No More (true ending) path
    extremely good side content
very inspired and well made setting/world

It's very high quality but I think it starts losing steam halfway through and man was there a lot of grinding for money and backtracking when I played. Again, very good game I would recommend it.
