I usually play horror games that rely on atmosphere to scare you
first time playing a jumpscarey game, and damn, the first couple jumpscares were fricking scary
I'll give at least the first FNAF a pass because it does jumpscares right: you only get them as a fail condition.
Later games like 3 just fall in to the trap of every other horror game and jumpscare you randomly for the fun of it which kills the atmosphere.

It's like 8 years old at this point. I'm fricking 27 and I distinctly still love the first few games, there was a really cool vibe when nobody knew anything about them and especially with FNAF2 when there was so many secrets with the minigames and very rare random events like the shadow animatronics. Gave a very distinct vibe that's really only been replicated through pure imitation rather than new creations.
It's a unique game that fulfills 3 purposes
1. Playing with your friends and getting scared
2. Watching other people have the same reaction
3. Refining strategies to beat the game

the jumpscares aren't what make the game scary, they aren't even part of the game since they only appear when you lose. It's the pressure exerted by playing the game that makes it scary. Being trapped and forced to wait for your enemies to come to you, and having to keep track of where exactly they all are at all times and dealing with limited power is a stressful experience and where the horror comes from.
