They can't even do outrage marketing for it now that Assassin's Creed game sucked the air out of everything.

      Anonymous

Their marketing campaign was squarely aimed at youtube "pc master race" types. They were denied a bigger budget by Gearbox, so some quack pushed a little campaign hoping to "positively weaponize the elitist toxicity of the RTS community" to drive engagement and thus advertise the game. Unfortunately the toxic rts elitists think the game fricking sucks lol.

BBI will be closed by September.

I can easily point to streaming number to say the marketing strategy reached tens of thousands of viewers. It's really BBI's fault for the game not impressing all those viewers and driving sales.

Or Gearbox's fault for not putting HW3 on Xbox Game Pass.

      >all the other character in the scene can reply with is "what?"
All it took was 10 seconds and I already knew this game was going to be shit. If it cares so little about that part of the aesthetic of homeworld then it's going to care equally little about everything else. And I see I have been validated in this assumption. See, this is the great thing about heuristics. I don't need a fricking big-ass detailed review. I just need a couple of seconds, and I already know. I already know everything else is going ot be shit based on them alone.

I just wish heuristics functioned better in a positive capacity. Its uncanny how well it works for knowing if I won't like something or if it will objectively be bad though. I could tell what a stinker Starfield was going to be by just 30 seconds of that initial combat reveal with the square shotgun chambers.
Are there financial instruments like puts where you can bet against video game successes? I'd be so fricking rich predicting every single major flop especially in these last 5 years.

What do you mean? Every niche game always has some genuine discussion around it post release, no matter how small. A dozen people discussing challenging parts of the campaign or interesting aspects of the story, at least. Even the tiniest niche games stick around for at least a couple of weeks.

HW became niche when Relic>Blackbird threw a hissy over Cataclysm being more-original and having better gameplay than HW1. HW2 was the sequel we didn't want.
I suppose Deserts of Kharak was the prequel we did want; but it should have been better (making buyers pay extra for the lore manual was buttfricking stupid).
HW3 was the opportunity to revive the franchise and they blew it. Because they ran out of ideas in the first game, and can't paper over it with a jumped-up fan game like Kharak was.

Good community managers pay for themselves via twitch streaming and youtube content. The fans get to feel as if the company is listening. All you need to do is hire a CM that doesn't immediately insult the entire playerbase. The last part is what they keep getting stuck on.

              Anonymous

why hire a community manager in the first place?
The only community a game-dev should manage is the one inside the game.
You don't need a person to talk to random users on twitter.
You don't even need to pay people to manage subreddits and discord.
Involving community in development is a meme, you might as well ask journos to direct your game.
Promoting the game and events isn't even the job of a community manager.

                Anonymous

                >why hire a community manager in the first place?
Because devs should be developing video games and not handling their community. If there was ever a case for that it's Bioware's Social Network forum where devs spent more time chatting than actually developing games. Of course, your CMs should not be unprofessional Reddit and Discord mods.

It's not even necessarily about humanity, because until the nu-homeworld games, we never saw anyone's face. It was only ever implied that everyone is human, but even that was wishy washy with how many competing racial factions there were in the setting and what the implications would be for 100k's of years genetic selection and isolation for these respective factions.

Making everyone human feels like the first chip to the foundation of the lore that would eventually collapse and destroy the entire series.

              ?

As soon as they began directly humanizing everything, it wedged the door open for the DEI racism bullshit to barge in years later and destroy the setting. Even making s'jet a woman was a wedge piece that has now culminated in this

I'm so tired of this DEI bullshit

; though I'm sure if they had never ever made the races human in Homeworld, we likely would still have seen this happen.

In any case, the focus back then was on an entire race of people and their struggles, not the achievements of individuals. The more it became about an individual's accomplishments, the more it slid towards modern cape-quip and ideological iconoclasm because it became a useful propaganda tool for screaming in the gamer's ear how awful white men are and how great women and shitskins are.

It's pretty safe to just blame everything on Gearbox.

As soon as gearbox gets their hands on anything, they destroy it. I honestly don't understand how they're still in business. Probably the single worst publisher in the entire industry right now. Signing on with gearbox is basically a death sentence for your studio and they don't even have the money of EA, Activision, or Microsoft so at the end of the day you aren't even rich, you just sold out your IP for literal peanuts and then got to watch it be eviscerated and destroyed in front of you.

I wonder, if you asked the original BBI team if they wanted to sign on with Gearbox to work on Homeworld again, if they'd have taken up that offer instead of sticking to doing their own thing, completely indie, as their own studio? I would bet they would've turned Gearbox down.

HW3's marketing was the responsibility of Embracer Group since Gearbox was still owned by them while HW3 was in development. Nobody at the studio or Gearbox is responsible for it. Since the sale from Embracer to Gearbox happened in the months before launch there was no way for HW3 to even get a marketing budget since Embracer wouldn't market a product they didn't own and Gearbox didn't have the funds to do it themselves. They relied on word of mouth and streamers to do the job and it worked really well.

The ship design really didn't look like anything from Homeworld up to that point, the wobbling looked silly, and I didn't understand why they needed a railgun frigate when we already had ion frigates. It was clear that whoever was working on the game, from that one model, wasn't interested in maintaining the legacy but using the name as a license for their own sci-fi story.

Between HW2 and 3, I'm starting to think HW1 was just an accident. They always wanted to do something like HW2 and 3, they were just reigned in by various imitations.
Maybe *current year* changed the skin complexion of some characters, but substantially I'm not convinced it changed much. I feel like if you follow the trajectory from HW1 to HW2, it's plausible to end up in the vicinity of HW3.
Even DoK's upsides, like the cinematics, may have been due to budget constraints when the project scope was determined. It already had the sjetwanking after all.

Barking Dog may have actually been the only devs to actually understand and appreciate "the HW1 that released". For the devs, the released game may have always been a horrible approximation of what they actually wanted to do.
The death knell was probably them excitedly meeting with Gearbox employees determined to make their own game, using HW's brand to get the approval from upstairs because it guarantees some minimum amount of sales. As tends to be the case with all these legacy IP projects that hate their audiences, it's all just people wanting to do original content but being de facto forced by Marketing to wear the skin of existing IP.

Also someone shot Ruskay with a tranquilizer dart.

Homeworld 1 was what it was.

Homeworld 2 was a refinement and a technological leap over Homeworld 1 to catch up with where the gaming industry was going.

          >Homeworld 2 was a refinement and a technological leap over Homeworld 1
It was actually a step backward in technology compared to Homeworld 1. This sort of statement can only be coming from someone who never actually played these games on their release dates.

Homeworld 2 had a slightly nicer UI, and it looked better graphically, but on the backend mechanically it was 1000x worse, and on the story it was 10x worse. You hardly feel anything at all playing Homeworld 2; it's generic scifi slop writing and never came close to touching the feel of Cataclysm and HW1. Mechanically though, you lost all the emergent simulationist, physics-based aspects of the original engine, which created friendly fire, gave a reason to use formations, and resulted in actual tactics and strategies that didn't depend exclusively on a rock/paper/scissors scripted combat mechanic that HW2 tried aping from Starcraft et al.

Even today, you get entirely the wrong idea of the two games if you play the remaster because they literally just took all the HW1 assets and dumped them into the HW2 engine rather than remastering the HW1 engine. Even the new supposedly "original engine" made to run on modern computers, is full of bugs that completely ruin it. The only way to actually play HW1 and Cataclysm as they originally were is to have the original games and run them on emulators, or go through the trouble of getting them to work otherwise.

HW3 to HW1 is like a 4 year old child's fingerpainting to franz frazetta, or tic-tac-toe to tabletop battletech. No, that's really my entire point. The industry moved away from physics-based weapons fire for RTS games because it was an expensive technique that players generally didn't appreciate. It became the industry standard, and so HW2, rather than reinventing an archaic wheel, moved on. It's like how we no longer have V8s in cars; the industry moved on no matter how much enthusiasts prefer them to a turbo 4cyl.

              >because it was an expensive technique that players generally didn't appreciate
What? It's not an expensive technique at all. In fact if you look at how much effort has to be spent on finetuning every single possible variable by hand, the emergent properties of physics based systems becomes dramatically cheaper in the long run, especially when it comes to maintaining that shit.

There is absolutely nothing cheap about rock/paper/scissors style mechanics unless you never go further than the most basic b***h streamlined, 3 variable mechanics of it. Balancing it especially is something that takes fricking years of experience with the system and playing it in order to finetune correctly and then you end up with shit like "ok this specific tank has 20% damage resist against rockets, and 40% against AP projectiles, and 90% vs small arms, but this other tank has 10%, 30%, etc." Like you end up having these gigantic balance spreadsheets trying to work over 3000 different fricking variables all affecting balance outcomes in your game. It fricking baffles me that devs haven't learned to stop doing this instead of taking physics (systems) based approach to it all; where you apply properties to things and their physical interactions automatically determine outcomes without autistically finetuning every single variable involved.

The only thing that the RPS simplistic mechanics style has over emergent physics based ones is that it's like 3000x easier in terms of mathematics understanding, so of course it's what all the fricking morons make.

No, you can tell there was still some level of competence involved in the writing and art direction (but not the game mechanics, polish, programming, or UI) with deserts of kharak. It had the DEI shit but it wasn't completely over the top, it was still bearable and the overall story despite retconning some interesting and good lore wasn't complete ass, just not as good as it could have been.

But with Homeworld 3 you can clearly see that they just gave up. Whoever was actually competent in that studio was either completely suppressed and prevented/pressured from working on the game effectively, or outright fired. The collapse in quality even just between DoK and HW3 is like going off a cliff, whereas between HW1/Cataclysm and HW2 is a steep slope, and HW2 to DoK a shallow slope.

I like how HW3 made Cataclysm universally beloved. It was already well liked, but before this blunder any HW thread would often have the token purist shitting on Cata for being "not canon" and saying how HW2 despite all its flaws is the real successor to Homeworld.
Now suddenly everyone realized Cataclysm was Homeworld 1.5 and HW2 is where it all went wrong in the first place, thanks to HW3 taking all its flaws and none of the good parts.

HW1 being good was not an accident and I don't know why this is your conclusion. Relic just wanted to cash in on its success by franchising it even though hardly anyone actually played it. Homeworld 2 was designed to push the visual spectacle as far as possible without your CPU catching on fire. Ballistics and unit tactics were stripped to achieve this. Units were given far less health so that you could watch ships popping all day and it makes for cool marketing screenshots. The story was intentionally vague and grandiose to in attempt to capture the grandiose legacy the first game had garnered with what little story elements it had. The minimal UI was replaced by the ugly neon blue mouse compatible UI that took up half the screen.
These are all compromises to appeal to people that heard about Homeworld 1, but never played it. Homeworld 3 is simply following this trend. Homeworld is a game that gets a lot of praise from gaming journalists that never played it, but know that holding it in high regard is a respectable opinion. This is who they are trying to impress. It's people who don't play games making a game for people who don't play games so that they can leverage that into marketing to people who don't play games, let alone RTS games.

They initially had a fun daily grind simulator and fricked it up by adding an intrusive plot.
How intrusive you may ask? It actually prohibits you from playing whilst it lectures you.

Early Access launched with 1 ship bay, no story, 3 ship types with a number of "variations" in internal layouts and some external hardware attached. You had a cutter, grapple, and scanner to do most of your work and a tech tree that promised to let you dismantle ships quicker, cheaper, and with the promise of eventually profiting from your work.

It launched out of early access with 1 ship bay, no story, 3 ship types with a number of "variations" in internal layouts and some external hardware attached. You had a cutter, grapple, and scanner to do most of your work but they changed the tech tree so that most upgrades were incremental, rather than changing or improving the behavior of how things worked.

They also added, instead of multiplayer, a campaign story that followed you through your shipbreaking career and emphasized that you, the shipbreaker, are a wagie living in a cagie and the only way to break free is to unionize under the leadership of a strong black woman, stand up to the white man boss, and withhold your valuable manual labor. It's a story that's just preached at you because you can't really do anything to control the story; you just have it happen while the NPCs talk to you over the radio and you get a cheap-looking slideshow at the very end showing how the boss is now stuck in the low-end job while your black woman union leader is sitting at the negotiating table with all these high-powered CEOs.

The worst part is that they had a discord and early access community committing to making mods and giving feedback to the devs.

The most requested/asked for/anticipated thing was more ships, maybe vertical ships ala The Mothership in Homeworld considering how massive the bay is. You know how the devs responded?
            >Oh, we can't make new ships or different layouts because the engine isn't technically proficient enough to allow it. The physics break if we go above a certain size or a different shape.

People also hoped for multiplayer; there's so many opportunities for shenanigans with just the early access game.
            >Co-op would be a KILLER feature but it would likely take our entire team months just to investigate if it's even possible.

Customization never really made it into the game despite the fact that they were willing to add stickers and posters to the tools and hab. Is it really that hard to give players the chance to buy different colors of suit or something? REALLY!?

I mean, if you're doing an insurgency-type of story in a setting like that I would've thought they'd go with black-market shipbreaking where you steal parts from ships your salvaging or moonlight at another yard, slowly building up a rep for breaking up ever more dangerous wrecks or going out to regions like the asteroid belt where maybe you don't have access to all the tools and need to work on the cheap.

That reminds me, they never added new hazards after launch did they?

I definitely remember at least 20 on my first playthrough. The game is hard, not only in difficulty, but that your ships transfer over to the next level, so there is a very strong possibily that you have to start the game over because you lost so many ships and can't afford to replace them all in order to beat the following mission.

it took me about 18 though i played on hard and died a bunch on the ship dockyard mission so there was a number of retries

they are, i tended to go slow since you don't have a choice when to leave after the objectives are complete and i wanted the max amount of resources so i would delay leaving a lot of the time which also added more to the playthrough, that being said i did restart the dockyard mission a whole bunch on hard, i didn't realize how the reinforcements worked so i was trying to rush but that ended up giving the enemy even more stuff all at once instead of spreading the waves out

So the game AI, like in HW2, scales directly off how well you're doing? If you play smart and conserve units, it results in exponentially increased spawn rates and shit like that?

That's what killed HW2 for me the first time around. I'm only a few missions in, take my time at the end of the mission to get my fleet in top shape before I jump, you know, going into the unknown fully prepared for anything. Mission starts and it's an immediate clusterfrick, being swarmed by impossible odds that don't make any kind of gameplay sense. Beat my head against that wall for a few days and give up.

I later read that the 'correct' way to play is to metagame the AI and recycle all ships before jumping, so I start with nothing (but RUs), and the AI spawn rate is set at 'light patrols', not 'multiple capital ship assault clusters'.

Original HW2 was brutal. The AI would spawn in waves every few minutes, and for each ship you had, it'd spawn three, plus they'd always be the right type to counter your current ones. You had to fight cleverly because trying to match production made it go insane.

Now I can't find the post in my post history. I think they nuked the whole thread without even locking it. I didn't get banned, either.

Community managers have always been a fricking mistake. They are the worst of the worst. They suck the dicks of awful devs and treat customers like shit and constantly lie to keep their own position. None of you will remember this guy, but I had an exceptional hatred for the EA Games CM "Apoc" who managed the Command & Conquer games. This motherfricker lied to the customers nonstop, pretending to be this brodude who went on adventurous trips around Murrica, sponsored by EA.

I constantly got into fights with Demize and called him a pinhead with no good understanding of how or why a video game is fun way back in the mid 00s on the EA UK Forums before they were all closed. I knew for a decade+ what a fricking homosexual that dude was so it was no surprise he ended up destroying the Battlefield franchise.

Cataclysm also had fricking amazing voice actors. There's another scene where you come to the Bentusi to ask for help since they are old as shit and the second they realize what it is they lose their shit and attempt to warp to another galaxy to frick off. The peaceful people immedaitely try to kill you to desperately escape before the beast can reach them they are so terrified. And your commander calls them out on their hypocracy. If you guys were unaware this entire game is a nod to Event Horizon. The "Beast" is some extra dimensional "thing" that spreads through ships and consumes organic matter to make them come alive. And it supposedly was brought to homeworld from:
          >"a neighboring galaxy, using an experimental hyperdrive of immense power. By the time the ship emerged from hyperspace, it was carrying a malevolent form of life, which had not been present at the start of its journey. "

    >Only like 6 maps
    >No hyperspace
    >No actual open space map
And one of several likely tedious reasons there are no open space maps is turrets can only deploy to actual physical objects like ground
    >The whole resource setup is now mine for 2 minutes move onto the next, the whole map was basically gone in 10 minutes

The thing that kills me is that DoK was solid, 8/10 all-around with a lot of great immersion and visual/sound details. BBI already proved they can make a good RTS. HW3 is a step backward in most respects, even the way units move is way off, it's like they're too slow or something. I'm mildly disappointed overall. One big I can give is that the Wargames mode is a lot of fun. My one hope is that it gets engoodened.

I get that they want to try something new with cinematics by going full 3d, but it's almost unfortunate that their original style is way more interesting and iconic. I liked the animated motion-graphics effect they used in DoK.

Honestly brute forced my way through the game till the last two levels till I figured that out and it turned the game into easy mode. Dunno why attack doesn't make some units hold formation. Also, research is not linear. Items within each category can be researched in parallel. You only need to have one research of a previous category to be able to unlock the next one. It's a tree. Interceptor tech unlocks corvette tech, unlocks frigate tech, unlocks capital tech, but within any of those categories, you can research concurrently.

I guarantee the cross section of ESG/DEI and people ending up on black list are very wide. Money is for owners, because they print it. The West never stopped living under feudalism. It got central banking, usury and the illusion of capitalism as worse terms for their devalued labor. The same way communism is just another front for feudal corporate power. You can't have capitalist systems without sound money and fiat is not sound money.

You better hope they want to keep you around as a slave. Because right now you're just the carbon they want to eliminate.

          >pajeet programmers
          >BPD women
          >their corporate enablers
Throwing a BPD woman into a room full of nerdy white game devs is like throwing a starved weasel into a chicken coop. These are men who mostly lack experience with women. These are men who generally go along to get along. They are simply not equipped to understand that this is a deeply defective woman because they don't have the experience to recognize this. Thus they invariably let her have everything she wants, and as a BPD woman she wants everything.

No one put their foot down and said "no, this is a series based on understated thematic sci fi and 80s-90s films, not Marvel capeshit". They shrugged and decided it wasn't worth the pain which is going against mentally ill women with princess syndrome.

Bruh I literally never pre-order anything
Nothing in a pre-order is ever enough to make up for the game being 95% of the time guaranteed shit.

I genuinely don't understand the mindset of people who pre-order shit. How many fricking times do you have to get burned on pre-orders before you learn to just fricking buy a game when its released?

If you want the pre-order shit so badly just download it afterwards from some pirate site or torrent holy shit

        Anonymous

Over the years I've grown a very good eye to avoid getting burned by pre-orders since as you said, there is a very good chance the game will be shit and it has just gotten painfully easy to ID that. Soon as I saw that fricking roadmap it was an immediate NOPE.

Genuinely feels like the more polished off everything looks in terms of roadmaps, backer rewards, concept art, promo materials etc. etc. the more vaporware the game is. Like the only people doing any work are the marketing team.

So as a rule of thumb, anything that has great marketing (especially if its "great" marketing, like spamming Ganker nonstop with shills and bots) it's a game I automatically avoid.

Back before remastered was a thing and I was on SSRIs I actually spent two years making a mix of Freelancer and X3 with Homeworld ship designs. I made a whole fricking custom OpenGL engine, learned to load models, do shadows and the whole fricking rendering pipeline + 2D UI and eventually burned out.

I believe Homeworld Mobile is like that or at least has a strategic layer.

You made me check that subplebbit and actually they are shitting on the dreadful story almost as much as we do, minus pointing out the wokeshit because that would get you banned there.

If any of you actually purchased the game you should upload this into the artwork section.

    Denuvo = Dead on arrival.

Terrible performance, and worse gameplay than the previous versions from 20 years ago.
