This, I love this goofy game as hell game. I played it too much in high school to really get much enjoyment out of Cyrodiil anymore but I still enjoy some Shivering Isles playthroughs from time to time.
I have incredible memories of it since It came out at that time in my child/teenhood right before I really began understanding 'systems' in games. It is also broken beyond belief and incredibly flawed / shitty in many ways.
Me too bro. I think it may have been the first game I ever bought with my own money, I was so amazed seeing it at a family members house I had to get it. Surprised our pc even ran it. Damn I wish I could experience that again
Oblivion graphics are pretty nice for when it was made.
i played it a long ass time ago but i remember enjoying the quest to join the blades and also liking the oblivion realm section.
It's honestly one of the best games ever made. The jank makes it more powerful. People probably wouldn't want to admit it, but the npcs doing weird ass shit like randomly attacking each other or doing other emergent shit actually makes it more immersive. It feels like you're in a strange world where weird as frick shit happens. Oblivion is where Bethesda started dumbing their games down because Todd is regressing, but it still had enough of Morrowind's mechanics left over for you to have fun with the magic sandbox luckily.
I recommend grabbing it but then downloading a Mod Collection off Nexus like Through The Valley (Vanilla Plus) to spruce it up for modern play (while keeping it vanilla at the same time).
Apparently the AI was even more autonomous before release, killing each other to obtain necessary items like food or even brooms to do their daily tasks. But that was turned off before release.
I know. I wish there was a way to re-enable it. Normans can't fricking handle that type of emergent gameplay and it gets on my fricking nerves. That's why every Bethesda game after has had boring dumbed down AI where people just stand in place and mention the cloud district every fricking time you pass by. Oblivion's immersiveness on the AI sector is very underrated despite its jank and I've been spending my life every since then trying to find a game that makes me feel the way it did.
Very true. They definitely saw the AI doing wacky things in videos and decided to tone down their autonomy even further in later games. It sucks, the NPCs being active was one definite improvement over Morrowind.
They probably killed the dynamic conversations because of the mudcrab jokes. It's sad because even if they were silly it's way better than complete silence.
Just add to my post, you can make the game look pretty good using the mod collection I recommended on Nexus. Here's a quick screenshot I took of a woman. You can fix the potato faces. I haven't downloaded any of the uprezzed world textures though.
>It's honestly one of the best games ever made. The jank makes it more powerful.
Its aged like wine because of the jank & the ability to absolutely break & exploit the shit out of the game. I put fallout 3 in the same 'good because jank' category but oblivion is really special.
Oblivion Gates were 100% not fun, and they were the point of the game.
The most fun I had was when I completely avoided initiating their existence by not progressing the story.
Oblivion Gates needed to be reworked.
Why would anyone want to play Oblivion in a literal dumbed down game engine that doesn't even have attribute stats. Maybe they modded it back in like the Skywind team did at least.
Why would anyone want to play Oblivion in a literal dumbed down game engine that doesn't even have attribute stats. Maybe they modded it back in like the Skywind team did at least.
It's a fantastic game.
Not perfect but no game is. >Great miscellaneous quests >some great faction quests >main quest is kino where you and Sean bean save the Empire from the gates of Doom >great expansions in the shivering isles and knights of the nine >comfy setting with a varied land scape, lots of color, and beautiful soundtrack >can buy houses in every city
I can go on. It's just awesome
high speed/acrobatics + maxxed fireballs is the most fun you can have with combat in any TES game. skyrim straight up does not have speed/acrobatics and in morrowind you still get stuck on the slightest incline even with icarian tier jumping ability. people who say oblivion has the worst combat have an IQ in the 70-80 range. its by far the most enjoyable combat of the 3 modern TES games.
great guild quests
gorgeous UI art
incredible music
a world where all named NPC's have a full 24/7 schedule, you can drop an item on the ground and it's still there after 300 hours was and still is groundbreaking for open world games. Really makes a game feel alive
- level scaling is atrocious
>you can drop an item on the ground and it's still there after 300 hours
Truly invaluable. I'd dump random stuff on the ground in bruma when I fast traveled there
And that UI are still has yet to be topped. Probably one of my favorite things form the game
It's fricking awful in almost every way, but at least it's funny. I really wish Bethesda would stop releasing Oblivion over and over though, and actually make a new game one of these days.
What do you mean? They released Oblivion with Guns, Oblivion with Dragons, Oblivion with Guns 2: even worse edition, Oblivion the MMO, Oblivion the survival crafter, and now Oblivion in space.
It's not as good as Morrowind, but I prefer it from Skryrim.
The ai is enjoyable and great for its time(it actually made me feel that witcher 3's towns a bit lifeless in comparison), I think it's the only elder scrolls game where npcs faces show some kind of expression(they are even more expressive than shartfield's npcs) and Tamriel along with Shivering Isles is fun to explore. It also has the best Dark brotherhood quests.
As for the negatives, the facial realism does not mix so well with the elder scrolls fantasy so the game has an uncanny valley feeling to it, the gameplay is a bit unrefined and the leveling system is wack but thankfully it can be fixed with mods. Speaking of mods, it also doesnt have the extensive mod variety, Skyrim or Morrowind does.
One of my favourite games, I've spent hundreds if not thousands of hours on it. Definitely not without its flaws, but most of them can be overlooked or fixed. Mods are brilliant too.
Things like the leveling system are easily avoidable, and the voice acting or the faces are meme-tier criticisms since Morrowind and Skyrim suffer from the same issue.
Oblivion was a great game when it came out but has been surpassed by even the average AAA open world slop today. Sadly even the best quests don't stand up, and there would be nothing special or memorable about if you played it today for the first time.
I love it, but it's flawed as frick and not even close to Morrowind - I realized it even as a kid who played Morrowind one year prior to Oblivion's release.
Shivering Isles is still top 5 best DLCs ever made.
excellently designed side quests.
Spell crafting is broken in the absolute best way
underlying systems regarding leveling are wack.
sneaking, as in all bethesda games, feels nonsensical.
Combat wasnt very interactive. Just click on your opponent til they die
I was late on the Bethesda train after trying FO3 in 2012 or so but i'd say Oblivion is my least favorite. Also FO3 and Skyrim were the only ones I was able to finish. For me open world games are usually like a 20-30 hour fun high then I rapidly burn out.
Never liked it. I grew up being used to modern games, but I could get into Morrowind with time and ended up loving it. I also like Skyrim quite a lot as a sandox to roleplay and frick around in. I could never bring myself to enjoy Oblivion. Everything looks so fricking goofy and out of place.
people are ugly but the world itself is the comfiest shit ever also the player homes are peak comfy the game is just really comfy okay. fav Bethesda game unironically including starfield.
>+5 stats on level up
means you don't have to worry about leveling "optimally" >quest award leveler
keeps your unique gear useful
i find both of these counteract the level scaling pretty well since you don't have to do minmax autism or ignore fun quests so that their powerful rewards don't get wasted
oblivion hardest difficulty is absolutely ridiculous, even by bethesda standards, it takes ages to kill anything but you die in 2 or 3 hits from anything
Oblivion was the most addicted I've ever been to a video game in my entire life. It was like digital crack to me when I was in high school. I was a big fan of Morrowind so waiting for Oblivion and watching all the pre-release had me firmly on the hype train. Still have my GameInformer with Oblivion as the cover story.
Anyways, I don't think I'll ever experience the sense of "wow" like I did when stepping out of the sewers for the first time. Totally blew me away. I think you had to be there to truly understand what a massive leap forward it was for gaming at the time. Quests were good, factions were incredible, NPC AI was fun as hell, and the world was a joy to explore.
In retrospect a lot of the mechanics are just flat out bad and visually it has aged poorly. The level scaling is the single biggest flaw with the game and something I mod out every time I install. Overall it's nowhere near perfect but it holds a special place in my heart.
To me is Better than Morrowind and has more soul than Skyrim.
Morrowind is too old frens, i recognice that i never mod it or replay it since the times when i had a black big original first Xbox.
Entitled to that opinion man, it was quite a game for its time
But really in hindsight, if I were to play Skyrim or morrowind today and only could mod one thing, it would be graphical improvements to make it a bit more comfy.
Oblivion, it would have to be a scaling/leveling overhaul because the system is so fricked it destroys actually role playing.
It just represents the bizarre design of the game
The class leveling side of it bothers me more, because the solutions are to intentionally leave certain skills out of a build so they can be power leveled, or to make a build with skills you’ll never use. Both methods involve ridiculous grinding.
And if you consistently get shit +2x3 levels you will be underpowered by level 30-40
nah the solution for that is simply the difficulty slider, not being able to find anything new until you level up is a far worse issue in a game with exploration
Yep fricking autolevel in Oblivion was shit!
But that is the only thing that is there to criticize, the rest is very cool, with all the skills and abilityes
Athletics, acrobatics there is no more game with those things.
To me Oblivion is the bethesda game with more soul than anyother.
Waiting now to see starfield btw...
Some fights are insufferable because of how long they take. Once a fight takes forever, you really start to realize how primitive the combat system of the game is and it really gets on your nerves
But it's good, it's worth it. I wish I had played it when I was a teen, bc I have no time now
>get the itch again >remember I'd have to install dozens of mods, probably breaking the game in the process >would only play for two evenings before uninstalling
Man.
>What's the skinny on this? Haven't played it in years and used the old script extender and Mod Organizer tedium. Is this wabbajack simpler than that?
well for years I modded everything normaly
it took a week to download everything, do all the shit you have to do to make it work, batch patches, load order etc, even with all the tools it takes times
wabbajack literally does everything for you, and I mean everything not just downloading x textures, but also the base shit like script extender, 4gb etc etc etc.
I installed it and play and it fricking works. It's modding for morons.
I like the last seed mod pack because it's vanilla + good graphics + fixed levelling/scaling, which is all you need, no fanfiction / custom shit or any added content.
>character creation >I want to be a sword fighter >pick sword fighting as a specialty >askhully, that's wrong >you were supposed to specialize in hitting things with sticks >always fight with sticks >time to level up >NOW you can use swords before it's time for bed
It's one of the worst rpgs ever made
nice game
really need UI mods to play it on PC to get away from that 5-item-nested-list console abomination (even todd admitted he needed them too)
but other than that I actually like to play the game purely vanilla
It's just comfy and I am so used to gaming the level system that it just doesn't annoy me like it seems to a lot of other people
I think the worldbuilding very weak compared to the rest of the series, BUT the actual writing of the game is at its strongest and I'll die on that hill - there's just so many characters I will never forget due to their dialogue or quests being so memorable
Te skyrim "enemy" >beg for mercy, or 'your yield' >they submit
Oblivion Gods >scream cartoon noises at you, even at the brink of death >requests that you impale yourself on their sword, even while attacking with a bow or mace >PREGNANT COW
Autoleveling ruined it, you HAD to make a build with skills you won't be using to not get swarmed by trolls and other shit. Can't make a hand to hand build, late levels are just a clicker game with chugging potions, you have to spam click the enemies to click them unless you do some frickery with magic. Archery becomes useless at late game too, basically you do so little damage you have to go mage if you want to have any fun time playing
Best main menu. Therefore the best TES.
I like the Playstation3 version because the absence of modding capability really let me enjoy the game instead of constantly thinking about modding the game.
Always found it funny you could just like... never level up and just beat the game. Really shows how broken the leveling system in the game was. I think a lot of people did that too which is a shame because you needed to level to see more of the interesting monster types.
>I think a lot of people did that too which is a shame because you needed to level to see more of the interesting monster types.
Everyone I know did the opposite maining skills they used frequently so leveled like crazy & basically caused the same exact problem by inadvertently skipping all the mid tier monsters replacing them with ogres on their first play through.
Is it true that you should only pick combat skills because non-combat skills will level you up without raising your combat abilities and the enemies will outlevel you?
I love it but it's objectively shit
Objectivity is a meme when it comes to personal enjoyment of a video game.
this. level scaling ruins it, but becomes max comfy with a lot of good mods and waifu (not sex) mods.
My exact opinion.
This, I love this goofy game as hell game. I played it too much in high school to really get much enjoyment out of Cyrodiil anymore but I still enjoy some Shivering Isles playthroughs from time to time.

i like it but wish its high fantasy setting wasn't locked by region.
Better than Starfield
Absolute shit.
easily the best game ever made
oblivion wasn't made, it evolved from morrowind
you creationist bigot
shit graphics, decent slop
oblivion realm is shit though, best part is strutting through the isles and discover shit
Oblivion graphics are pretty nice for when it was made.
i played it a long ass time ago but i remember enjoying the quest to join the blades and also liking the oblivion realm section.
i liked skyrim more though overall.

If you dont like oblivion, you have no sovl
comfiest elder scrolls game, spent years playing it every night in bed, just chilling in the forest, doing quests
It's very comfy. I absolutely love the setting. The graphics were very good for 2006, and it hasn't aged badly. It's still pleasant to the eyes.
I think it's worth it
I love it and have nostalgia for it but it's easily the worst of the 3D Elder Scrolls games.
Oblivion Gates were 100% not fun, and they were the point of the game.
The most fun I had was when I completely avoided initiating their existence by not progressing the story.
Oblivion Gates needed to be reworked.
I just ran straight through them without enganging with the enemies. Took about 5 min to close each gate
Great game, still holds up.
setting is comfy as frick but it needs a better game to be in
Good game, but I fricking hate the level scaling so much.
skyblivion.... is still 2 years away....
you'd be moronic to play this over the original
kys
Why?
Your mod is going to be forgotten anyway if the rumors about the Oblivion remaster is true.
the oblivion remaster will be forgotten unless it's the same game but stable for modding
that would be cool
That's what the leak said it would be. It'll be a new graphics engine layered on top of the original engine.
>layered on top of the original engine.
meaning it wouldnt be stable ergo the remaster will be forgotten
Why would anyone want to play Oblivion in a literal dumbed down game engine that doesn't even have attribute stats. Maybe they modded it back in like the Skywind team did at least.
looks crap
If you actually liked Oblivion you would play Oblivion. Not this Skyrim with an Oblivion skin shit.
Those shitty mods are for Skyrim babies who haven't played the previous ones.
It's a fantastic game.
Not perfect but no game is.

hasnt aged well
Replayed it recently, definitely had nostalgia for it and it wasn't as good as I remembered. It's still comfy tho
Better than starfield.
Shit game but I loved modding it.
best rpg ever made with mods
Its like Skyrim but with some of the more fun bits of Elder Scrolls still intact.
Bad game that's aged terribly
The music and a few decent quests are the only good things about it
>no new IP
excellently designed side quests.
Spell crafting is broken in the absolute best way
underlying systems regarding leveling are wack.
sneaking, as in all bethesda games, feels nonsensical.
Combat wasnt very interactive. Just click on your opponent til they die
It was the first game that I felt was 'next-gen' in the 360/ps3 era. I played the frick out of this game for years.
The best elder scrolls game
it has major issues holding it back from being a really good game. if you know how to work around them you can have a lot of fun.
I was late on the Bethesda train after trying FO3 in 2012 or so but i'd say Oblivion is my least favorite. Also FO3 and Skyrim were the only ones I was able to finish. For me open world games are usually like a 20-30 hour fun high then I rapidly burn out.

horrible game but i probably have over 5000 hours on it
Starfield in Europe
people are ugly but the world itself is the comfiest shit ever also the player homes are peak comfy the game is just really comfy okay. fav Bethesda game unironically including starfield.
🙂
my hero! retired now, but completed every heroic quest.
What is the best mod to fix the level scaling?
The difficulty slider
bingo. tap it down one notch every level.
>+5 stats on level up
means you don't have to worry about leveling "optimally"
>quest award leveler
keeps your unique gear useful
i find both of these counteract the level scaling pretty well since you don't have to do minmax autism or ignore fun quests so that their powerful rewards don't get wasted
Very fun game. Zoomers and gen Alpha should play it (I only beat the main quest once).
Sounds cool. If it's haunted, I'm gonna hunt you down and shove your head into your urethra
>made me hear "My head into my URETHRA?!" in wes' voice
It's you. Hi.
oblivion hardest difficulty is absolutely ridiculous, even by bethesda standards, it takes ages to kill anything but you die in 2 or 3 hits from anything
yeah, you have to run through the tutorial amd start summoning fast.

>I think you had to be there to truly understand what a massive leap forward it was for gaming at the time
Yeah. Everybody was playing it back then
Truly love it, replayed last summer and still loved it.
Loved it on release, but much worse than Skyrim and morrowind in hindsight
To me is Better than Morrowind and has more soul than Skyrim.
Morrowind is too old frens, i recognice that i never mod it or replay it since the times when i had a black big original first Xbox.
Entitled to that opinion man, it was quite a game for its time
But really in hindsight, if I were to play Skyrim or morrowind today and only could mod one thing, it would be graphical improvements to make it a bit more comfy.
Oblivion, it would have to be a scaling/leveling overhaul because the system is so fricked it destroys actually role playing.
It just represents the bizarre design of the game
imo the level scaling is a problem with loot and exploration mainly, the class leveling side of it can kinda be ignored

Waiting now to see starfield btw...
TFW you realize the ayleid magicka foutains are copies of some precious greek ruins.
Gottshaw
it busted my amd. it broke my pc...do recommend it? yes
>It's a bethestard mental breakdown and spam the catalogue episode
What is it now?
Good game, but still not quite there
Some fights are insufferable because of how long they take. Once a fight takes forever, you really start to realize how primitive the combat system of the game is and it really gets on your nerves
But it's good, it's worth it. I wish I had played it when I was a teen, bc I have no time now
>get the itch again
>remember I'd have to install dozens of mods, probably breaking the game in the process
>would only play for two evenings before uninstalling
Man.
I did this for years until wabbajack
now I just load the last seed pack and it takes 0 effort
This fren!
I cannot imagine how many times i break my head with mods, but now with precious sheogorath wabbajack is all perfect.
What's the skinny on this? Haven't played it in years and used the old script extender and Mod Organizer tedium. Is this wabbajack simpler than that?

You don't have to do that though.
This intro to me is the best one.
Because ... Well if you dont know you dont know...
>playing this shit on a crappy video card
god damn those were the days
I like the quests and the world. I'm a sucker for radiant AI too. But it desperately needs mods to fix the level scaling and shitty dungeons.
It's funny how easily broken the game is by just using wait after every battle to restore all your hp in an instant.
>You cannot rest when enemies are nearby's your path
Barely even a problem when you can still use wait in a dungeon with enemies as long as they aren't near you or aggro'd to you.
They say that when you reply, the image should be attached. It's how your sentiment comes across.

Say what you will about the NPC faces, the monster designs are fantastic.
the minotaurs made me very horny
The liches are tremendous. Even if you can swat them aside instantly, they have such prescence. Even their hit noise is great.

>exploring town
>do a painting sidequest
>still level one because I will not level up
>can't beat trolls because they regen faster than my dps
lol
Always found it funny you could just like... never level up and just beat the game. Really shows how broken the leveling system in the game was. I think a lot of people did that too which is a shame because you needed to level to see more of the interesting monster types.

I wish it wasn't so hard to install fricking mods
I want someone to just make a 'Install all these good gfx mods for morons .exe' and I'd dive back in
So many shit games have graphic overhaul mod packs so why doesn't Oblivion?
It’s so fricking ugly
I think Oblivion has really shitty dungeons.
