a game that was harmed by a shitty development, specially the decision to make it cross-gen instead of next-gen
nonetheless, it's a very good sequel that presents an interesting of mix of elements from its 2 previous predecessors (even if not always for the best) as well as some cool additions and nice improvements
Gameplay wise, I would say it's the best out of all Fromsoft's Souls games, specially in regard to character building - it's biggest failure in this front is that it doesn't properly teach players (which imo is a significant reason why it got the reputation it did)
Also I enjoyed the greater emphasis on resource management, it made these game's "King's Field" roots really shine through
In regards to leve design, I would say this game was both the highest highs and lowest lows

    When ranked to the other games, imo: DeS > DS1 = DS2 >>> DS3
Demon's Souls is arguably the most unique game and imho exploration and atmosphere have always been these games primary attraction, not the combat
Dark Souls is the most consistent game in its quality across all design elements and throughout the whole experience, plus it is the best entry point into the "sub-genre" it spawned
Dark Souls 3 imo has nothing to offer that the other games haven't already done it better. Sure the combat is more "frenetic", but combat in these games isn't that special, plus this Bloodborne pacing doesn't suit the series. And now that Elden Ring exists, DS3 now retroactively feels like a beta...

      >Dark Souls is the most consistent game in its quality across all design elements and throughout the whole experience
      >throughout the whole experience
lmao no the second half of Reddit Souls 1 took a nosedive quality
DeS and DS2 are more consistent
      >it is the best entry point into the "sub-genre" it spawned
it's the just first one on PC normies and posers have access to unlike DeS, it's not it's the ''best'' game to start with by any means

Dark Souls 2 is a very, very good game.
Dark Souls 2 SotFS is the best Souls game, and one of the best RPGs in the known universe.

DS2 is, more than anything else, consistent.
It has lower peaks than DS1 - Painted World is the highlight of the series and no area of DS2 can quite live up to it, plus most of the bosses are quite forgettable compared to the interesting bosses of DS1. However, the vast majority of DS1 is not a peak, in fact there's at least as much content that's actively bad as there is content that's fun. DS2 has neither these peaks nor these vast troughs - it only has a single memorably bad area (Black Gulch) in a game that's much longer.
I feel like it also has slightly more going for it in the narrative/dialogue department if you're into that sort of thing. I'm not especially, I can remember no serious dialogue/NPCs at all from DS1, but I do remember Lucatiel and her "I beg of you, remember my name... for I may not myself."

I replayed it a couple of years ago thinking it would feel like some PS1 shit but it was fine. Original dss and ds1 feel worse now entirely because of the 4-way roll. I have no idea why the Ganker console war over it became like one of the top 5 most hate filled of all time

*The main legit criticism is that it's ugly, they have very bad looking tiled textures everywhere and everything looks dusty and dirty with the stuff that should look shiny and metallic or wet not working right. But the dark souls 1 remaster now looks like that too, very strange

This game is UGLY asf, like fr it looks like a cheap rushed thing, by far the ugliest in the series even more considering how it is older than DS1 and demon's

Still very flawed but it's not a terrible game, not even a terrible Souls game. Never was.
It's in this awkward place where it's both overhated for it's obvious issues, but also underhated with way too many apologists trying to defend it.

Charming and full of fantasy, but one of the worst, most idiotic designed games ever ... with some neat ideas sprinkled throughout.

Ugly, cliched and somehow the best game in the Souls series.

It was always my favorite which I guess is the odd opinion, but I just think it generally had the best level designs even if they weren't connected logically. Which is frankly a stupid thing to b***h about in the first place.

I like the entire trilogy and never felt the urge to autistically disect it, I just play whichever entry I feel like playing

While it's totally incoherent and a lot of it ranges from bad to worse it does deserve credit for the shear variety in its levels, which is one of the points where I'd easily rank it the best in the series. The early game also gives you great freedom in which order you tackle things, and I liked deciding where to use the pharros stones and branches whenever I found them.
