I won't say sh1 is bad as a game, it has some impressive tech and is pretty competent for a 3d 5th action adventure, but its overall design in comparison to the re trilogy is sloppy and amateur
Silent Hill 1-4 undoubtedly beats the Resident Evil trilogy in terms of atmosphere, music, environments and scares. But at the same time, the gameplay really is pretty fricking basic.
>Shoot/whack enemies >Check 100 locked doors >Do an easy puzzle >Shoot boss until it dies
It's actually mind boggling how little the gameplay evolves from SH1 to 4. No boss even has a gimmick or anything like that, its just shoot them until they die. I love Silent Hill but the classic RE games utterly mog them in the gameplay department and that's why I'll always prefer them. Inventory management and challenge are basically non-existent in Silent Hill.
Agree, the gameplay of silent hill is astoundingly dogshit. Also it's not basically, inventory management is literally non existent in silent hill, I wouldn't even call it survival horror
RE1 is excellent, a true classic.
RE2 is great, tons of content.
RE3 is really fun and hard, made for people who mastered the first two games.
Probably the best video game trilogy ever made.
1 suffers from being an especially primitive 1996 ps1 release and re2 is disappointingly soft in terms of difficulty. 3 is a bit small in scope but it's the one that absolutely nails it.
Terrific. Some of my favourite games ever and I only first played them about 5 years ago.
>RE1
My favourite of the bunch. An incredibly lean, all killer no filler experience. The way the mansion slowly unfolds like one giant puzzle box is so satisfying, even after you know exactly where to go and what to do on subsequent playthroughs. Incredibly tight pacing for both scenarios and the amount of ways in which you can do things out of order is surprisingly varied. Great music, atmosphere, and character designs.
In terms of the pure gameplay experience, I think survival horror still hasn't gotten any better than RE1 and REmake. Please don't skip the original either. REmake is great and the Crimson Heads are genius but so much of the appeal is how REmake plays upon your knowledge of the original.
>RE2
One of the best sequels ever. Upped the ante of the original in a variety of ways and feels like an explosive summer blockbuster. Basically Terminator 2 to RE1's Terminator 1. Zapping system is great, music is even better, high amounts of replayability, and the two scenarios are more distinct than the originals. In the end it ultimately falls short of RE1 because the police station does feel like an inferior version of the mansion, the sewers are a bit boring, and RE1's lab is better than RE2's lab. One of the best games ever, but not as strikingly original as RE1.
>RE3
My least favourite but still a good game. Some of the best pre-renderered backgrounds of the generation, Mercenaries is great, Racoon City is a very refreshing change of pace, and Jill is sexy as hell. Nemesis is great when he's stalking you, but some of the mandatory fights can be incredibly frustrating. The dodge and push mechanics are too finnicky to pull off in a pinch. Having just one playable character is a bit of a letdown too. Still miles better than Code Veronica and 0.
re1 is one of the best games ever made
tank controls are kino and a hallmark of classic ps1-era survival horror
remake1 is fantastic and arguably the best horror game ever made although i personally think RE1 original is slightly more soulful, both games are mandatory though
RE2 was fun but i didn't feel as much of a connection with it, i actually enjoyed the remake of 2 a lot more than the original
RE3 i played once and it was ok but i didn't like it anywhere near as much as 1 or even 2, i found nemesis to be frustrating as a mechanic. i didn't finish RE3remake cause i didn't enjoy it much either.
Why can’t we have a functional version of the OG 3 with achievements, built in randomizers, and upscaled backgrounds? It’s be so easy, and I’d pay $50 for it.
>achievements, built in randomizers, and upscaled backgrounds
achievements are available for retro games these days i think, idk what it's called but there is some retroachievement thing that works with duckstation i'm pretty sure
upscaled backgrounds probably already exists or would be easy with esrgan type shit. i don't see why we need to be charged money for a 25 year old game again to get features that are already possible with the current versions
Well its definitely not meant to look that way and doesn't look like that when you play it on Dolphin or a real GameCube. So I'd say its just something wrong with the cables or capture equipment that those GDQ troons are using.
>Honest thoughts on the Resident Evil PS1 trilogy?
Some of the greatest video games ever made.
The very best RE has to offer. Nearly endless replay value, they're a joy to revisit every other year or so.
It’s just alright, Silent Hill was a lot better, and in my opinion RE didn’t strike gold until 4.
Also RE1 2002 was better than the og trilogy

You posted the Saturn version right?
lol really shit opinion. SH is good but that second part of your post is just wrong.
man the saturn version had really wonky character models
The OG game is better than REmake in a lot of ways.
dated and mid as hell. thank god for the remakes
2 > 1 > 3
1 = REmake > 2 > 3

The Zapping and Live Selection systems were very interesting and its a shame the series never revisited them.
Chris? Stop it!

Strange how RE3 feels a bit small despite having all of Raccoon City as its setting. Still a great game though.
decent fun. the re1 remake is better than any of them.
Amazing, RE1 1996's atmosphere is literally perfect

Doesn't even match up to 2 in this regard.

It's worth playing. Anyone that says the remakes are better is moronic.
why do the gamecube versions of 2 and 3 look so much darker compared to other versions?
Haven't noticed that personally but the DC version of RE2 has color space conversion issues which gives the whole thing an unintended red tint.
The one example I have is vid related, but it should show what I mean when I say "it's darker compared to other versions"

I have the same issue with my gamecube, although it's using composite cables. I wonder if it might be the TV, since I've seen this issue before.
RE1 was great but I was never a fan of the direction the two sequels took.
RE1 good
RE2 best
RE3 sucks
