i really like the mechanics of star rail.
i really appreciate the QoL such as being able to do your dispatch missions/synthesis within the menu compared to genshin. and only having one daily mission compared to four while getting the same rewards
genshin requires too much manual labor. being able to complete my dailies in just a few minutes is a literal game-changer because i dont have to manually enter a domain and manually kill the same group of enemies over and over and over and over again. nor do i have to explore the soulless open world and climb mountains to pick flowers. star rail is moreso what i am looking for in a gacha, and while i wish there was more to do in the game at present i am very happy with it.
i also really like how characters kits are designed. for only two attacks/ultimate theres a surprising amount of utility baked into the toolkit of your characters. light cones also feel a lot more interesting/useful than the weapons in genshin.
I quite like it and looking forward to future content. I dropped Impact and Genshin since I never liked the gameplay in those, so I much preferred the turn-based combat more. There's less juggling shit bullshit and you can take your time with stuff. Just upgrade gear, know your characters' abilities, and don't be moronic.
Though I was enjoying the game more until I got to Space China. I don't recall a single name of anything and find the setting unappealing. Hope they branch out more later.

You got different combat and lack of climbing, thats about it for differences. Even then, the combat follows the same general rules of 1 skill+1 big cinematic move, it even runs off of energy charging like in genshin. Everything else, the grind, character progression, equipment systems, events and even puzzles to a degree, is just copy pasted form genshin. Funnily enough, even got content drought copy pasted as well

Clara is less tanky than Gepard but outputs far more damage than him since she's a mix of tank and damage dealer. Kind of like a Bruiser?

Nah. I have little reason to roll for the time being since there aren't any character upcoming that excite me. That also includes silver wolf now. I think I'll be sitting at around 35 special passes worth of jades by the time the login bonus is up? For now I'll just save.
It's alright as a companion game to Genshin. They probably plan the content drops cadence around each other so there will always be something to do in either game.
Me me me! I've been playing since about a week after launch and I really enjoy it. Rolled for Seele and got her, skipped Jing Yuan, then rolled for my favorite character Silver Wolf and got her. Unfortunately I got bricked on her Light Cone banner by getting Himeko's Light Cone instead so I have to grind these next 2 weeks for it. But for only having spent $21 on it (2 nameless bps, $1 on monthly pass from google play discounts) this game is great, aside from the "we want you to grind all these materials but you can only upgrade one skill level per day because the drop rates for purple materials at tb50 are trash".
They should be a little more generous with the resin to help get the primary stats you need on relics but I guess that's the "gameplay" while you wait for the next patch to come out

It's a game I can have a somewhat good time with. I do feel like the honeymoon period is coming to a close though because I'm not as inclined to do story as I was before. The gameply is also getting rather stale. You'd think there would be more to do in a battle than target weaknesses and alternate between basic, strong, and ultimate attacks. This game should have had a form of elemental reactions like genshin does, to add some complexity to the combat. I do love how events are added to a catalogue to replay later though, that's a nice addition that some of the other gachas I play don't share.

I like it, but I wish combat was a bit more involved. Boss mechanics so far are pretty irrelevant and can be boiled down to "kill adds" or "ignore adds and push down boss". I havent farmed for relics once yet, relying solely on max level characters, light cones, and traces and have beaten every SU without much trouble by simply changing out my dps to hit weakness.
I wonder if my teams had full gold relics at +12 if the game would be too easy.

If you can beat the first part (including the first boss), you are strong enough to do everything with blessings. And even if you can, if you get shit blessings, you can't win.
Essentially like slay the spire, where your run can miraculously saved at the very end.. or just slowly die.
That said, the difficulty is definitely not beating, but doing so within a reasonable amount of turns. The only exception I've seen was the highest difficulty domain of silver wolf. The fat guy in the boss fight had the usual aoe ability amped up to 11. Almost oneshot my more squishy characters, like Herta... who even uses a def% relic and is lvl 70/70. Totally can see people getting oneshot by that.

Like others have said, it does feel a bit lacking in content at the moment, especially compared to Honkai Impact 3rd. Still, I am liking the current event a good amount, and hopefully there's some more game modes added soonish. Also, really hoping to get Bronya before I hit 300 on Standard.

I'm playing, but there is absolutely fricking nothing to do. Every day, you log in and waste 5 minutes spending your stamina only to get fricked by RNG, for months. Currently, I don't know why I'm playing. The banner and content schedule is too sparse to care about anything. The next unit I want wont be on banner until September, and there will be nothing to do until then. When I finally get her, there will be no content to use her in. 90% of my playtime will still be spending my stamina to auto battling levels while never getting anything good from them

You don't have to play the game 24/7. Do your dailies, spend your resin, or just leave and come back when there's more story content.

The issue is losing interest in the game due to massive month long periods where the only gameplay is logging in, spending your stamina on auto battles, and then logging out, with the only thing to look forward to being a unit that is probably months away still, which you still might lose the coinflip on. It almost takes longer to launch the game than it does to complete the dailies, which is a good thing because I'd rather have short dailies than long dailies, but the content is spaced so far apart that it feels like there's no reason to even be doing them. Maybe hoyo's just not for me, though

Do either of these games have to wait 6 weeks for crumbs of new content? Because thats consistently the problem with hoyo games, arknights just wrapped up another big event so a rerun makes sense to rest, and CC11 is around the corner.
Meanwhile Star Rail released two events in the span of 3 days, one being a "hunt" for photo stickers and the other being an actual reskin of a genshin event, and thats it, we got nothing until what, august?

No, anon, it isn't. Most gachas don't have over a month of dead space, and every gacha I've ever played where the banner lasts 3 fricking weeks has always had multiple simultaneous overlapping banners, released at a rate of about once every week or two
This game has a 6 week content cycle, where the "content" takes like 30 minutes the Museum was pretty good though and a 3 week banner cycle, where there is only one banner happening at a time. Also, I have played one other game that seems to have stolen hoyo's gacha system, but even then it didn't disguise the actual %0.6 rates, it was a more normal gacha rate, and it was also more generous than HSR. Like I said, maybe hoyo games just aren't for me, but you can't say every game is like this, because they aren't. That's the issue. The issue is I've played other gacha games, and after hearing so much about Genshin, for years, my personal hoyo experience is not even comparing favorably to any of the various other gachas that I have *quit*, let alone the ones that I kept playing

No idea what kinda gacha you play, but Star Rail has more stuff to do than any other I do. While you said nonsense like 30 minutes, and it's much more close to at the very least 5 hours if not more this patch so far, most gacha have their at best 2 hour event per month and that's it.
They are raising sims. In grand total this patch is likely getting close to 10ish hours of stuff to do, provided you don't speedrun like a moron. Even if you do, I doubt it's much less than what other games do. Especially because if you speedrun those like a moron, you have 30 minutes at best. (i.e. Blue Archive events)
If you just want to waste your time with the game, you can kill things on the overworld for exp or play SU. If you want actual content, play normal games or come back in a year or two. It looks like Star Rail won't be removing events, only rewards.

other than that though silver wolf makes it so you don't need to worry about not having the right elemental weaknesses when doing hard content like simulated universe or memory of chaos with her ability, so she's by far one of THE best units you can roll for

There's no need for a theoretical perfect def down uptime for her, as the def down depends on the enemy turns, and not yours. It makes more sense for a buffer, but a debuffer.. nah.
Her ult is also best used for breaking, so you can unleash your barrage there. (you know, quantum break, benefiting from def down by itself, but also by getting more stacks). You should always ultbreak enemies in this game after all, after they did their first action in their turn. That cancels any and all possible follow ups, and they have the turn pushed back as much as possible.
As long as your def down/weakness lands, you can do whatever. As long as you play your cards right, she always has def down when it's needed. No extra energy needed. Those theories some people come up with assume way too many things that aren't exactly realistic.

Not only is this not surprising, the actual surprising part is that this number isn't higher. You have a 98.6% chance of failing to get the 5* you want. So unless you whale for rolls or save for months in advance you aint getting shit.

Compared to a "normal" rate up gacha (0.7% vs our 0.3%), you'd have a 70% chance to fail there.
Mihoyo games put a lot more value on singular five stars than many other gacha do, and as a result 4 stars are very good, which is rarely the case in other gacha, or they simply won't get added after release anymore.
To be honest, a turn based game like this is likely going to work worse with this system compared to something like genshin. Team building is a LOT more important here, and limited chars being the norm isn't helping there. We'll see how this develops.
Limited chars being the norm doesn't help but having been 2 months since its release now many players are getting their 3rd or 4th 5 star character from pity. Sure you have to save up pulls for the limited you want but other than that a majority of the roster is gotten off the silver tickets which you can farm weekly or from ascending characters you get from the gold tickets while aiming for said limited unit. Not to mention how the silver ticket pity should be close to 150/300 or higher for you at this point if you've been playing every day during that 2 month period. Being able to choose an essential 5 star like Gepard or Bailu for Memory of Chaos to farm future banner rolls is a way for the system to ensure you won't totally be behind forever as long as you truly enjoy the game and dedicate your time to it. Plus Mihoyo will give out more welfare units in the future as well. 5 stars are tempting yes but perfectly good teams can be built for free. Although I will admit as a F2P I have won both 50/50s, 40 pulls for Seele 78 pulls for Silver Wolf.

How did you make this math up when the game tells you the rates of everything? In one 10 pull you will have a minimum of 5 3 star light cones since their pull rate is slightly over 50%, and this is assuming there isn't more, or in the most likely case 9/10 of the rolls. You are guaranteed 1 4 star minimum, and before you bring up that it has "and up" that means jack shit because it will always priorities a 4 star over a 5 star. And if you still don't believe me, here's a rolling sim https://hsr.wishsimulator.app/. I got 1 5 star in 80 rolls, and at 180 rolls I got 2 on the rate up banner. On the standard banner 90 rolls (pity) to hit 1 5 star light cone, and 160 to get another 5 star light cone. That is way more of a failure rate than 86% and 70%

You donkey, Silver Wolf has to stay in mono teams or double teams with quantum. And level up your serval she is good.
Team 1: Silver Wolf, Quinque, Natasha and Sushang. Good DPS, good break, decent healing and sustain.
Team 2: Tinyun, Himeko, March 7th, Dan Heng. Good balance between aoe and single target DPS. You can replace Himeko for Fire MC if you need more shields.
Level up Dan Heng and Serval and switch them depending on boss weakness. Silver wolf + Quinque and another two of the same element is always good. If you don't like the gambling addict girl you can use Silver Wolf+ three characters of the same element.
Basically all characters are good, just switch them around to have 1 tank/healer, 1-2 support, 1-2 DPS of the correct element.
I just picked up this game and I have no idea whether I’m missing out on anything by just continuing the story. Made it to the ice world and suddenly they’re asking me to play Simulated Universe, but I’m getting absolutely truffled by the World 1 boss which feels like a sign it’s not time for this yet. Do I just continue with Story, or should I be grinding something somewhere?

For like seele seele seele and seele alone. Unlike the other fox she buffs crits. The only redeeming factor she has is that none of her skills scale with stats so you can build as a sub dps

That sucks, Seele was annoying so I didn't bother getting her.
Everyone likes crit rate. I can see her work very well together with Clara and in general counter chars, as they don't use up turns of the buff. A well timed ult of her and Clara when enemies zerg you, can lead into a lot of damage bonus.
That said, the kit is extremely weird to use. As far as I understand, you basically hard require to save up ultimates for her ultimate, as any two chars acting after her kills the buff. So in a weird way, she works extremely well with the likes of Sushang, who wants to always break with her ult. Her sig cone also gives you huge amounts of extra damage when the ulti is charged (96% bonus damage to normal atk and skill!, fully maxed), making Sushang work really well. So when the enemy is about to be broken, you go all in with her ult, Sushang ult -> Sushang extra turn + extra sword dances. Maybe add a debuffer (Pela, SW) on top, and you will likely wreck.
It's a weird char that definitely requires very specific chars to go with. Anyone not minding to hold their ult, is that. Seele.. actually isn't. Her extra turn synergizes well, but her ult gives her a buff and she kinda wants that all the time. Meanwhile debuffers (i.e. silver wolf), Sushang, Counter chars (currently only really clara) can work quite well.
There's one big disadvantage. She needs to use her fricking skill to get charges, until e6. Pretty hard to use well. You ideally break a boss after their first action, to cancel the second and get the most out of the break (especially with Sushang). So unless you have the perfect turn order of her -> Boss and not her -> other char 1 -> other char 2 -> Boss.. it flatout won't work.
That's maximum damage theory yes, but the only thing needed to make fox work is speed calculation. You need her to act first then two primary dps. He only issue I have with seele and silver wolf is that the seele skill buffs her speed which changes her position in round 2 but somehow it normalizes to have fox act last after coffin boy and before the enemy rotation, thus giving bronie and seele the two activations. I don't have her e6 but when it comes it will make the mistiming easier to fix

I can tell you from other turn based games that the only useful thing in defensive supports is either that you are also getting valuable offensive buffs, or you are basically immortal.
Unless this game never actually goes into "pure balance" territory, both 5 star Abundance chars stay within their respective niche.
Bailu is for easy risk play, allowing you to play near death scenarios on single char without being afraid that they might die, and dealing with the biggest bursts of aoe damage easily.
This dude is for dispel and cleanse, though Nat can do one of these as well, just not nearly as good, and he's working well with counter type of chars. He's also better against low damage output of enemies, though at some point you gotta ask yourself if you even NEED a healer then. He sucks at burst and aoe healing.
Nothing truly broken or needed quite yet. Seele and Bronya stay to be the best units, due to how important speed, extra turns and in general turn manipulation is. But even both of these have major issues. Seele's 1 hit ultimate being completely shit and her relying a bit too much on the "buffed state", Bronya's ult being extremely short in duration and all the crit damage in the world ain't gonna help without a crit happening. (aka the Seele ult problem) This game is actually so balanced, it's kinda boring.
Even SW who gets praised so much is ultimately a single target specialist, that needs another one for actual damage (unless e6, but game is piss easy as a whale anyways), and then you realize you can't take a hyper buffer + healer, because LUL several enemies appear, and they don't have whatever weakness you need -> gg.

It works better with seele-like characters. Freeze advances the enemies turn while Imprisonment slows enemies. Which makes the lack of DoT fine since your goons are smacking the enemy more times.
Although I personally think QUA break is the best
It's not. If you don't get at the very least 3+ stacks, even fire is better, and physical will easily beat it vs bosses.
Then there's wind, which is better damage than quantum if the enemy is an elite/boss and has less than 270 toughness (aka 9 auto attacks, 3 single target ultis or 4.5 single target skills). Wind needs no hits afterwards, but ticks twice, aka takes longer to do its damage.
Quantum break is currently overrated because of SW. She has a big def shred, and as such can amplify her own quantum break really easily. But you don't need quantum break, you need the def down for that. The only way to amp break damage is by shredding def and obviously raising your break effect stat.
They made it so switching weapons and relics is much slower than Genshin (Lots of UI menus with artificial delays before you can press confirm), to discourage this.
Since I won the gamble on Luocha I'm planning on switching to teams with a healer dps and two buffers/debuffers.
Leaning on doing Luocha/Asta/Bronya and Seele with the other team being Natasha/Pela/Tingyun and Jing Yuan.
I don't think Yukong fits anywhere better in here does she? Does anyone?
I'm more in a pre-planning steps. Most of my characters have passable relics and I'm just finalizing some of the teams there. Concern with Yukong is really just SP points. Tho I guess Asta will be pretty bad too, won't she?
When I say passable, I do mean "it has the right main stat" in plenty of cases.
Somehow the only set of relics I have that are near perfect rolls are for the fricking ice shota that I don't even have.
Astra is poverty buffer. Yukong is miles better but needs to be faster than your DPS for her kit to work. I think I have 135? speed on her right now and Seele is able to stay below her with % boots.

I'd get your pulls done on the beginner banner, it shouldn't take too long to collect enough star rail passes (don't use gems for this, you can reach pity with free tickets). Pity system is the same as in genshin. Just roll for who you like. There's little reason to meta slave since the game is pretty easy.

To be fair, if you want your abyss jimmies, you have basically no chance but being a very active early-ish player who knows what they are doing (aka it isn't "easy" to use who you want), or a slave to meta.
Other events are free as frick, but the abyss IS an event as well. Listed in the event list and such.

SW is best build for break, and I'm not sure if the def ignore of the set works on break damage. If it does, it's good, if not.. eh.
You do not need atk though. My 69% break effect (not even that much) SW dealt a combined damage of 90k vs. the ice weekly boss. 20k on break ulti, 70k final dot. She far outdamaged my ultra unlucky Seele not even critting one of her ults, even though her crit rate is pretty massive.
Those are two different slots.
The break effect slot is the last one, where you only have ATK as a rival. Precisely because she needs effect hit, she can't have crit rate/damage, as that's the same slot. And that is why you don't go atk, but break effect. It's honestly pretty obvious and plays well with her on field tech as well.

Let's take a fricking look at Yukong. She is workable pre-e6 but you have to build your dps to act after her. Post e6 you can just use your ultimate to migrate the turn misalignments due to speed or Frozen/imprisonment debuffs.
I don't want to sit here and create an individual scenario for everyone coming across this, just so they can play the game 1% better.

Plus good relics in several cases too I feel. My dps are fine but I've borrowed some that are way better just because I haven't fully leveled out my relics and took some not as good substats.
How are we supposed to know? The game hasn't even been out an entire year yet and despite all the leaks there's no mention of another standard banner, only that they'll add the new 4 star units like Yukong to it over time.
The special banners need their own tickets, and it's what you use your premium currency on. (jades)
They feature a limited character (or cone) that can ONLY be gained by the respective banner. They will all have reruns eventually mind you. But not anytime soon. People estimate the first rerun will happen in January, which is roughly 9 months past the game starting.
Currently the dude with the blonde hair is featured. We had a few others before. 3 to be exact. Next week is gonna be a new one. "Progress" (towards soft pity and such) carries over to the next banner of the same kind. (characters or cones respectively)
The standard banner should only be pulled on with the tickets you gain for it, for example via weekly simulated universe. Don't spend jades there. Unless you whale for the 300 pull selector on that.
Now that I beat MoC 10, my motivation dipped.
I auto everything in this game other than MoC, so I'm technically only "playing" the game once every 2 weeks. If I roll for a character, it has to be something that brings worth in MoC, otherwise I won't actually see her.
This is quite different from Genshin as even shitty characters may be fun to explore the world with and whatnot. Don't see myself playing HSR for much longer.

yeah but i still prefer genshin. it has cool characters and to give credit where credit is due the animation slaps and its clear theyve had a high budget, but the gameplay gets boring so fast. even doing story quests felt like a chore. the lack of jumping is sending me insane. i only really play for the gacha and occasional cool event or smth. but generally speaking, its fricking bland. the combat is too slow for me, i dont like turn based games too much.

Blade is literally better than Kafka, the numbers in-game prove it. He just does more damage, pretend there's a vegana between Blade's legs if you must but you're missing out not pulling the best Wind DPS right now. I for one am not so easily caught up in someone's gender to roll for them because I simply have a higher IQ.
I have never watched CSM in my life. I want Kafka cause she's hot, and she basically enables an entirely unique playstyle to really flourish. I'd never build characters like Serval or Sampo without her, but with her they have value.

It's about the same spike you saw from 59-60, the problem is everything is far more expensive to gain the same amount of improvement out of your characters.
I want a decent imaginary dps, and maybe another support like Pela for units like Jing who don't respond to direct buffs too well. Otherwise I feel like I'm only going to super want SW when she returns and some 5* hunts for each element as they come out.

i really like the mechanics of star rail.
i really appreciate the QoL such as being able to do your dispatch missions/synthesis within the menu compared to genshin. and only having one daily mission compared to four while getting the same rewards
genshin requires too much manual labor. being able to complete my dailies in just a few minutes is a literal game-changer because i dont have to manually enter a domain and manually kill the same group of enemies over and over and over and over again. nor do i have to explore the soulless open world and climb mountains to pick flowers. star rail is moreso what i am looking for in a gacha, and while i wish there was more to do in the game at present i am very happy with it.
i also really like how characters kits are designed. for only two attacks/ultimate theres a surprising amount of utility baked into the toolkit of your characters. light cones also feel a lot more interesting/useful than the weapons in genshin.

I quite like it and looking forward to future content. I dropped Impact and Genshin since I never liked the gameplay in those, so I much preferred the turn-based combat more. There's less juggling shit bullshit and you can take your time with stuff. Just upgrade gear, know your characters' abilities, and don't be moronic.
Though I was enjoying the game more until I got to Space China. I don't recall a single name of anything and find the setting unappealing. Hope they branch out more later.

Even then, the combat follows the same general rules of 1 skill+1 big cinematic move, it even runs off of energy charging like in genshin. Everything else, the grind, character progression, equipment systems, events and even puzzles to a degree, is just copy pasted form genshin. Funnily enough, even got content drought copy pasted as well

Me me me! I've been playing since about a week after launch and I really enjoy it. Rolled for Seele and got her, skipped Jing Yuan, then rolled for my favorite character Silver Wolf and got her. Unfortunately I got bricked on her Light Cone banner by getting Himeko's Light Cone instead so I have to grind these next 2 weeks for it. But for only having spent $21 on it (2 nameless bps, $1 on monthly pass from google play discounts) this game is great, aside from the "we want you to grind all these materials but you can only upgrade one skill level per day because the drop rates for purple materials at tb50 are trash".
They should be a little more generous with the resin to help get the primary stats you need on relics but I guess that's the "gameplay" while you wait for the next patch to come out

It's a game I can have a somewhat good time with. I do feel like the honeymoon period is coming to a close though because I'm not as inclined to do story as I was before. The gameply is also getting rather stale. You'd think there would be more to do in a battle than target weaknesses and alternate between basic, strong, and ultimate attacks. This game should have had a form of elemental reactions like genshin does, to add some complexity to the combat. I do love how events are added to a catalogue to replay later though, that's a nice addition that some of the other gachas I play don't share.

I like it, but I wish combat was a bit more involved. Boss mechanics so far are pretty irrelevant and can be boiled down to "kill adds" or "ignore adds and push down boss". I havent farmed for relics once yet, relying solely on max level characters, light cones, and traces and have beaten every SU without much trouble by simply changing out my dps to hit weakness.
I wonder if my teams had full gold relics at +12 if the game would be too easy.

If you can beat the first part (including the first boss), you are strong enough to do everything with blessings. And even if you can, if you get shit blessings, you can't win.
Essentially like slay the spire, where your run can miraculously saved at the very end.. or just slowly die.
That said, the difficulty is definitely not beating, but doing so within a reasonable amount of turns. The only exception I've seen was the highest difficulty domain of silver wolf. The fat guy in the boss fight had the usual aoe ability amped up to 11. Almost oneshot my more squishy characters, like Herta... who even uses a def% relic and is lvl 70/70. Totally can see people getting oneshot by that.
SW has a really nice ass.

The next unit I want wont be on banner until September, and there will be nothing to do until then. When I finally get her, there will be no content to use her in. 90% of my playtime will still be spending my stamina to auto battling levels while never getting anything good from them

The issue is losing interest in the game due to massive month long periods where the only gameplay is logging in, spending your stamina on auto battles, and then logging out, with the only thing to look forward to being a unit that is probably months away still, which you still might lose the coinflip on. It almost takes longer to launch the game than it does to complete the dailies, which is a good thing because I'd rather have short dailies than long dailies, but the content is spaced so far apart that it feels like there's no reason to even be doing them. Maybe hoyo's just not for me, though

No, anon, it isn't. Most gachas don't have over a month of dead space, and every gacha I've ever played where the banner lasts 3 fricking weeks has always had multiple simultaneous overlapping banners, released at a rate of about once every week or two
This game has a 6 week content cycle, where the "content" takes like 30 minutes the Museum was pretty good though and a 3 week banner cycle, where there is only one banner happening at a time. Also, I have played one other game that seems to have stolen hoyo's gacha system, but even then it didn't disguise the actual %0.6 rates, it was a more normal gacha rate, and it was also more generous than HSR. Like I said, maybe hoyo games just aren't for me, but you can't say every game is like this, because they aren't. That's the issue. The issue is I've played other gacha games, and after hearing so much about Genshin, for years, my personal hoyo experience is not even comparing favorably to any of the various other gachas that I have *quit*, let alone the ones that I kept playing

No idea what kinda gacha you play, but Star Rail has more stuff to do than any other I do. While you said nonsense like 30 minutes, and it's much more close to at the very least 5 hours if not more this patch so far, most gacha have their at best 2 hour event per month and that's it.
They are raising sims. In grand total this patch is likely getting close to 10ish hours of stuff to do, provided you don't speedrun like a moron. Even if you do, I doubt it's much less than what other games do. Especially because if you speedrun those like a moron, you have 30 minutes at best. (i.e. Blue Archive events)
If you just want to waste your time with the game, you can kill things on the overworld for exp or play SU. If you want actual content, play normal games or come back in a year or two. It looks like Star Rail won't be removing events, only rewards.

There's no need for a theoretical perfect def down uptime for her, as the def down depends on the enemy turns, and not yours. It makes more sense for a buffer, but a debuffer.. nah.
Her ult is also best used for breaking, so you can unleash your barrage there. (you know, quantum break, benefiting from def down by itself, but also by getting more stacks). You should always ultbreak enemies in this game after all, after they did their first action in their turn. That cancels any and all possible follow ups, and they have the turn pushed back as much as possible.
As long as your def down/weakness lands, you can do whatever. As long as you play your cards right, she always has def down when it's needed. No extra energy needed. Those theories some people come up with assume way too many things that aren't exactly realistic.
Her event cone is actually better than her 5* cone

Compared to a "normal" rate up gacha (0.7% vs our 0.3%), you'd have a 70% chance to fail there.
Mihoyo games put a lot more value on singular five stars than many other gacha do, and as a result 4 stars are very good, which is rarely the case in other gacha, or they simply won't get added after release anymore.
To be honest, a turn based game like this is likely going to work worse with this system compared to something like genshin. Team building is a LOT more important here, and limited chars being the norm isn't helping there. We'll see how this develops.
Limited chars being the norm doesn't help but having been 2 months since its release now many players are getting their 3rd or 4th 5 star character from pity. Sure you have to save up pulls for the limited you want but other than that a majority of the roster is gotten off the silver tickets which you can farm weekly or from ascending characters you get from the gold tickets while aiming for said limited unit. Not to mention how the silver ticket pity should be close to 150/300 or higher for you at this point if you've been playing every day during that 2 month period. Being able to choose an essential 5 star like Gepard or Bailu for Memory of Chaos to farm future banner rolls is a way for the system to ensure you won't totally be behind forever as long as you truly enjoy the game and dedicate your time to it. Plus Mihoyo will give out more welfare units in the future as well. 5 stars are tempting yes but perfectly good teams can be built for free. Although I will admit as a F2P I have won both 50/50s, 40 pulls for Seele 78 pulls for Silver Wolf.

How did you make this math up when the game tells you the rates of everything? In one 10 pull you will have a minimum of 5 3 star light cones since their pull rate is slightly over 50%, and this is assuming there isn't more, or in the most likely case 9/10 of the rolls. You are guaranteed 1 4 star minimum, and before you bring up that it has "and up" that means jack shit because it will always priorities a 4 star over a 5 star. And if you still don't believe me, here's a rolling sim https://hsr.wishsimulator.app/. I got 1 5 star in 80 rolls, and at 180 rolls I got 2 on the rate up banner. On the standard banner 90 rolls (pity) to hit 1 5 star light cone, and 160 to get another 5 star light cone. That is way more of a failure rate than 86% and 70%

On the second team, replace Dan Heng with Serval if you like her more.

Level up Dan Heng and Serval and switch them depending on boss weakness. Silver wolf + Quinque and another two of the same element is always good. If you don't like the gambling addict girl you can use Silver Wolf+ three characters of the same element.
Basically all characters are good, just switch them around to have 1 tank/healer, 1-2 support, 1-2 DPS of the correct element.

For like seele seele seele and seele alone. Unlike the other fox she buffs crits. The only redeeming factor she has is that none of her skills scale with stats so you can build as a sub dps

That sucks, Seele was annoying so I didn't bother getting her.
Everyone likes crit rate. I can see her work very well together with Clara and in general counter chars, as they don't use up turns of the buff. A well timed ult of her and Clara when enemies zerg you, can lead into a lot of damage bonus.
That said, the kit is extremely weird to use. As far as I understand, you basically hard require to save up ultimates for her ultimate, as any two chars acting after her kills the buff. So in a weird way, she works extremely well with the likes of Sushang, who wants to always break with her ult. Her sig cone also gives you huge amounts of extra damage when the ulti is charged (96% bonus damage to normal atk and skill!, fully maxed), making Sushang work really well. So when the enemy is about to be broken, you go all in with her ult, Sushang ult -> Sushang extra turn + extra sword dances. Maybe add a debuffer (Pela, SW) on top, and you will likely wreck.
It's a weird char that definitely requires very specific chars to go with. Anyone not minding to hold their ult, is that. Seele.. actually isn't. Her extra turn synergizes well, but her ult gives her a buff and she kinda wants that all the time. Meanwhile debuffers (i.e. silver wolf), Sushang, Counter chars (currently only really clara) can work quite well.
There's one big disadvantage. She needs to use her fricking skill to get charges, until e6. Pretty hard to use well. You ideally break a boss after their first action, to cancel the second and get the most out of the break (especially with Sushang). So unless you have the perfect turn order of her -> Boss and not her -> other char 1 -> other char 2 -> Boss.. it flatout won't work.

That's maximum damage theory yes, but the only thing needed to make fox work is speed calculation. You need her to act first then two primary dps. He only issue I have with seele and silver wolf is that the seele skill buffs her speed which changes her position in round 2 but somehow it normalizes to have fox act last after coffin boy and before the enemy rotation, thus giving bronie and seele the two activations. I don't have her e6 but when it comes it will make the mistiming easier to fix

I can tell you from other turn based games that the only useful thing in defensive supports is either that you are also getting valuable offensive buffs, or you are basically immortal.
Unless this game never actually goes into "pure balance" territory, both 5 star Abundance chars stay within their respective niche.
Bailu is for easy risk play, allowing you to play near death scenarios on single char without being afraid that they might die, and dealing with the biggest bursts of aoe damage easily.
This dude is for dispel and cleanse, though Nat can do one of these as well, just not nearly as good, and he's working well with counter type of chars. He's also better against low damage output of enemies, though at some point you gotta ask yourself if you even NEED a healer then. He sucks at burst and aoe healing.
Nothing truly broken or needed quite yet. Seele and Bronya stay to be the best units, due to how important speed, extra turns and in general turn manipulation is. But even both of these have major issues. Seele's 1 hit ultimate being completely shit and her relying a bit too much on the "buffed state", Bronya's ult being extremely short in duration and all the crit damage in the world ain't gonna help without a crit happening. (aka the Seele ult problem) This game is actually so balanced, it's kinda boring.
Even SW who gets praised so much is ultimately a single target specialist, that needs another one for actual damage (unless e6, but game is piss easy as a whale anyways), and then you realize you can't take a hyper buffer + healer, because LUL several enemies appear, and they don't have whatever weakness you need -> gg.

It works better with seele-like characters. Freeze advances the enemies turn while Imprisonment slows enemies. Which makes the lack of DoT fine since your goons are smacking the enemy more times.

It's not. If you don't get at the very least 3+ stacks, even fire is better, and physical will easily beat it vs bosses.
Then there's wind, which is better damage than quantum if the enemy is an elite/boss and has less than 270 toughness (aka 9 auto attacks, 3 single target ultis or 4.5 single target skills). Wind needs no hits afterwards, but ticks twice, aka takes longer to do its damage.
Quantum break is currently overrated because of SW. She has a big def shred, and as such can amplify her own quantum break really easily. But you don't need quantum break, you need the def down for that. The only way to amp break damage is by shredding def and obviously raising your break effect stat.

I'd get your pulls done on the beginner banner, it shouldn't take too long to collect enough star rail passes (don't use gems for this, you can reach pity with free tickets). Pity system is the same as in genshin. Just roll for who you like. There's little reason to meta slave since the game is pretty easy.

SW is best build for break, and I'm not sure if the def ignore of the set works on break damage. If it does, it's good, if not.. eh.
You do not need atk though. My 69% break effect (not even that much) SW dealt a combined damage of 90k vs. the ice weekly boss. 20k on break ulti, 70k final dot. She far outdamaged my ultra unlucky Seele not even critting one of her ults, even though her crit rate is pretty massive.

Those are two different slots.
The break effect slot is the last one, where you only have ATK as a rival. Precisely because she needs effect hit, she can't have crit rate/damage, as that's the same slot. And that is why you don't go atk, but break effect. It's honestly pretty obvious and plays well with her on field tech as well.

The special banners need their own tickets, and it's what you use your premium currency on. (jades)
They feature a limited character (or cone) that can ONLY be gained by the respective banner. They will all have reruns eventually mind you. But not anytime soon. People estimate the first rerun will happen in January, which is roughly 9 months past the game starting.
Currently the dude with the blonde hair is featured. We had a few others before. 3 to be exact. Next week is gonna be a new one. "Progress" (towards soft pity and such) carries over to the next banner of the same kind. (characters or cones respectively)
The standard banner should only be pulled on with the tickets you gain for it, for example via weekly simulated universe. Don't spend jades there. Unless you whale for the 300 pull selector on that.

Now that I beat MoC 10, my motivation dipped.
I auto everything in this game other than MoC, so I'm technically only "playing" the game once every 2 weeks. If I roll for a character, it has to be something that brings worth in MoC, otherwise I won't actually see her.
This is quite different from Genshin as even shitty characters may be fun to explore the world with and whatnot. Don't see myself playing HSR for much longer.
HSR is like Genshin for me in that I play through new content each patch and then drop it until the next bit of new content drops 6 weeks later

yeah but i still prefer genshin. it has cool characters and to give credit where credit is due the animation slaps and its clear theyve had a high budget, but the gameplay gets boring so fast. even doing story quests felt like a chore. the lack of jumping is sending me insane. i only really play for the gacha and occasional cool event or smth. but generally speaking, its fricking bland. the combat is too slow for me, i dont like turn based games too much.
