Dualsock was just so much better, if Saturn controller didn't exist, the N64 controller would be laughable bad for the time.
But it's usable of course, just a shame that the thing they tried to prevent by designing it like this backfired and made it so much worse.

      >muh dualsock
That came much later when Sony was playing catch-up to the N64's pioneering analog control. Their original controller was a joke... less modern than a SNES pad.

I really like the ergonomics of the digital ps1 controller. Holding one of those things REALLY makes you realize just how fricking tacked on the analog sticks are on later playstation controllers.

didn't nintendo patented the d-pad design so no one but them can do that?

Nobody who used an N64 when it came out had a problem with it. It looks weird in retrospect but in practice we just ignored the ability to change grips and had right hand on the right part and left hand manning the joystick on the center part.

It's more confusing than anything else.

Sony took the SNES controller and evolved it in a logical way. Whereas Nintendo just pulled a weird trident out of nowhere.

BUt the N64 controller still has the classic d-pad and not 4, but 6 face buttons.
I don't hate the PS controller but the segmented d-pad never convinced me, still doesn't.
Having 4 shoulder buttons was also dumb, I prefer 6 face buttons.

SNES has 4 face buttons. Also N64 dropped Select.

Only the jaggedness of the grips and the control pad are bad about it. I guess reducing the face buttons from the Saturn's 6 to 4 is bad, too. Everything else about is fricking amazing. A great successor to the N64.

    hello, tourist from twitter.
the N64 controller's design is a mindfrick, but it isn't unusable like the kids keep whining on about.
it's simple: left hand on the middle grip, right hand on the right grip.
nothing difficult about it since *gasp* just about every god damn n64 game primarily uses the middle-right layout.

That's not a hot take. It was considered the best for 3D gaming until the PS2 or original Xbox controller came out. Even looks like a beast. morons and zoomers that don't realize the grips are options for various gameplay styles or player preferences simply can't be helped.

Wait, is the N64 controller being a bad a thing?

I thought it was really innovative. Multiple ways to hold the controller depending on what game you played. If anything I imagine it would've suffered from individual developers feeling like they need to use up a button just 'cause it's there.

Yes. It comes up whenever there is a discussion about it on any website. It's a very common trope at this point.

      it has an amazing stick...
when it's a brand new controller and it's the late 90s. playing a game like starfox or mario 64 with a brand new n64 stick felt fricking great but yeah they were not durable enough to withstand kids and morons that would "flick" it.

        Anonymous

they didn't lubricate them at the factory which is why they turn to shit very quickly. If you managed to find a new old stock N64 controller and greased the shaft (no homo) it would last for a long time. SNK did the same thing with the Neo Geo CD controller so the microswitches will wear out. They are non-standard too so they're very difficult if not impossible to replace as far as I know.

        >they were not durable enough to withstand kids and morons that would "flick" it
Have you ever played any of the N64 Mario Party games? They're pretty much the primary reason why those analogs would go to shit, way more than kids being kids and dropping them.

You're pretty much fighting against a tidal wave of people who have only played games on the dualshock, or controllers inspired by the dualshock, when you say anything positive about the N64 controller, so you're not going to win, just on the basis that it's different, and people don't like adapting to things that are different to what they're used to.
It's really not a bad controller. When it's in good condition I mean. It's ergonomic. It's comfortable. The extra precision of the stick is really nice for any game that has you aiming a crosshair. The d-pad is nice and big. It's fine. Good even.

N64 d-pad is just the traditional d-pad though.
However, most people find it "stiff" because most N64 controllers have virginal d-pads, as very few people actually used it, so it's brand-new.
It's funny because it's the opposite of the 3D stick, which by 2022 all of them are very, very worn out due to use.

I actually like stiff d-pads. Ones that are too squishy feel annoying to me.

        it's not that it's stiff .. it's more like
I can't quite put my finger on it .. feel cheap?
the GBA SP D-Pad just feels so right in comparsion
(and I don't remember having to break it in either)
the Wii and the Wii U D-Pad was an improvement but still not quite there

also they all feel better than the PS controller D-Pad

Other controllers at the time being the first iteration Playstation and Sega Saturn controllers, which are pretty much just Super Nintendo and Megadrive controllers, and not designed around 3D games at all.

Any idiot who claims you needed "Three Hands" obviously never had an N64, at most they might have played one for ten minutes at an uncle's house or something.

NO game used the left, middle, and right side of the controller at once. The whole point was that you could either use the d-pad and buttons at once, the analog stick and buttons at once, or the d-pad and analog stick at once (very few games used that last configuration). Practically no games expected you to use the d-pad, analog stick, AND buttons at once, since that would require moving your hands all over the controllers three intended grip styles depending on the game.

That being said, yeah, the DualShock ran circles around this thing in comfort, usability, features, and overall design. But that only came out AFTER the N64.

Also unpopular opinion: The N64 controller doesn't even come close to the worst console controller Nintendo ever designed, the GameCube holds that title for me. I don't get why anyone seems to praise that piece of shit so much. Just look at it! It's like it was designed by a 5 year old using a toddler's paint program drawing random shapes. An A and B button where the B button is three times as large for some reason. The X and Y buttons orbiting the gravity of the massive B button that are shaped like a fricking Emesis pan. A d-pad made for ants. Two analog sticks, but different sizes. One side having two shoulder buttons and the other having one, with said Z button being a tiny flat trigger compared to the large concave L and R buttons that stick out. The L and R buttons for some reason being both analog AND digital.

What was that fricking random nonsensical mess? About the only thing they got right was the analog triggers... so of course that's one feature Nintendo NEVER used again in any console ever after the GameCube.
