here's a few from various settings:
    >isolation
this is a particularly cruel punishment used for stuff like treason. the victim is kept in a cell and watched to prevent suicide. once a week, a surgeon will visit, amputate a toe, make sure the wound recovers, then the process repeats the next week. when the toes run out, he moves on to the fingers, then the hands, arms, legs, etc. there are different variations (for example, some may cut off the fingers one knuckle at the time, or the times between "visits" may differ), but in the end, the victim loses their arms, legs, genitals, eyes, ears (also having the inner ear destroyed with a heated spike or molten metal), nose, tongue and teeth. they are then sent to a monastery to live a long life 🙂

    >breeding
one faction creates giant genetically-engineered super soldiers. because they grow much larger than regular humans in the womb, pregnancy is basically torture. as the fetus grows at an astonishing rate, the mother's body and organs struggle to cope and her skin at the belly threatens to burst like an over-inflated balloon. Only feeding tubes and a wienertail of drugs save the mother from starvation, organ failure and the above-mentioned skin-splitting.
ultimately the fetus must be delivered via c-section. if the woman survives this ordeal, she will likely be used for the same purpose again and again, with minimal interruption, until she dies.

When strapped to a patient's head and upper back, the nerve stapler extrudes hair-fine probes into his brain and spinal column. A psychotherapist can then use the device to inflict extreme sensations (not necessarily pain) on the patient, subjecting him to a rapid course of psychological conditioning. Unless possessed of exceptional will, the subject will usually succumb and become a calm and loyal member of society. Nerve induction is used in more technologically advanced societies.

The punishment sphere is built around the stapler, with a semi-translucent spherical cover that allows people to witness the torment of its victims. It's not uncommon for victims to suffer permanent psychological trauma by mere proximity to the sphere, before the stapler is even strapped to them.

The neurological procedure is designed to make any subject a calm and loyal member of society. The ability to maintain a distinct self-image is significantly decreased, and they have difficulty placing their own interests ahead of those of the group. Nerve-stapled citizens are also emotionally detached, unable to feel anger or other strong emotions. Unfortunately, this comes at the cost of much of their creative intelligence, and they are only able to perform well at tasks that are thoroughly familiar to them.

Nerve stapling is usually only inflicted upon the citizens of police states, where the procedure is used to quell unrest. Since the procedure has a drastic effect on the subject's ability to innovate, most faction leaders are reluctant to use it for fear of losing their technological edge. The procedure wears off, but slowly. Without treatment to reverse the procedure, a nerve-stapled citizen might require several years to recover his natural psychological balance.

Did you report them? I think it's important that we start using the feedback form. Moderation overreach on /tg/ is getting completely out of hand.

    >immolation
douse the victim in gasoline and burn them. excrutiatingly painful without much effort on the torturer's part
    >induced cluster headache
    exactly what it sounds like
    >gladiatorial death
the victim is killed in a gladiatorial arena, e.g. against beasts (like in certain roman coliseum games) or against a trained warrior (like the aztecs did for rituals)
to prevent the victim from putting on an inspiring show of defiance, like christians condemned to execution by hungry beasts, the victim would be lobotomized beforehand

Partitioning is a form of personality reconditiong that forcibly creates an alternate personality while sealing the original personality. The process was created as a way to create a unique form of sleeper agents but the process eventually causes the affected individual's mind and personalities to degrade until insanity sets in.

Currently, the process has been altered to turn the new personality hostile towards itself and seeks to accelerate the degradation that inevitably sets in.

Torture's ineffective since those in pain will say whatever they think you want to hear in order to make you stop. However psychosugery's which is the go to instead can seem indistinguishable from cruel and unusual torment. Certain societies also have ritual suffering woven into their cultural fabric on the same basis as potlatches, remembrances or marriage. These will become more common and savage as culture-wide planned obsolescence sets in.

Neat. iirc Book of the New Sun features the same as an execution method.

nobody has ever thought of that before you. That's why you ask open ended questions instead of leading questions, interrogate them over multiple days, and question them about their previous testimony, but by asking them to confirm things you know are wrong (according to their previous testimony) to see if they are capable of keeping track of their own lies, or continue torturing them after they give you the information you want so they don't know what exactly you want from them and have a harder time predicting you.

that's even assuming you're interested in interrogating them and aren't just doing it because they deserve to suffer.

Still useless. You can recognize the inconsistency, but you still can't glean useful testimony. Imagine that I REALLY don't want to be tortured, so I tell you the truth of what you want to know up front before you even start pulling fingernails. You already have what you want. You keep torturing me and ask me again a day later, and all I know is that you *didn't like* the answer I gave before, so if I want the torture to stop I have to tell you something else. Now you have two different answers, and no useful information because you have no way of knowing which of the two was a lie or the truth, or if either of them were the truth, or if I even know what you are asking me at all in the first place.

An expert torturer knows very well that you cannot trust one single subject, buy you can either draw a coherent image by adding multiple subjects accounts. Alternatively, you can use the wild imagination of the subject to manufacture useful propaganda and bent their mind to your own ends.
