I'm wondering how they improved the voice over quality for Perfect Dark. Did Rare really manage to save the original recordings all the way until 2008?

GoldenEye is just the ROM with achivements though there's a whole legal nightmare around that game that it's a miracle it was re-released at all. Perfect Dark is great though. 1080P 60FPS remaster with everything and online play. And if you have a One X or Series X it's bumped up further to 4K while the Series S version is 1440P.

Rare archives everything from their games as a studio policy. It's not surprising they had the original recordings available to use in 2008.

I kinda want Rare Replay on Steam

They're both emulated, but not using the same emulator. The Shitch version runs through the standard emulator used for all the N64 games on the system. The Xbox version runs through a different emulator developed by Code Mystics. The actual ground up remaster from 2008 will never be released because Nintendo won't allow it.

licenses are fricked, i tried googling it and that only the digital version of Rare Replay gets you goldeneye, not the physical version. what a weird situation

It's surprising to me because even studios bigger than them had pretty poor archiving practices (at the time of PD's release).

OP is talking about the leaked GoldenEye remaster for the Xbox 360 that was never released, not the current version of GoldenEye for the Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles.

    >Perfect Dark
Pretty good though the updated character models aren't always to everyone's tastes
    >GoldenEye Cancelled XBLA Remaster
Very cool, though unsurprisingly buggy and not easily accessible outside of emulation which means you'll have to endure even more bugs but it's a great way to experience the game in single-player if you have the fan patch.
    >GoldenEye Rare Replay Version
Exceptionally-disappointing and barebones. Doesn't even run at 60FPS or have online play and the emulation is just barely adequate enough visual bugs abound though it at-least controls well and doesn't need a fan patch. Also not easily accessible because they decided to fricking paywall it behind either the digital version of Rare Replay (and you can fricked if you have the disc and want to download it separately or just get it standalone) or Goy Pass. Don't bother with it just wait and pray the decomp project starts gaining momentum soon because it's been stalled for years.

Why did they decomp PD before GE?

        Anonymous

Because it's a better game in all honesty despite not being as culturally significant, though it's more likely just down to technical hurdles that take time to overcome with currently available disassembly tools.

          >Because it's a better game in all honesty

I legit don't understand how people think this. The mission design is far worse and full of tedious bullshit, there are very few single purpose conventional weapons without lame gimmicks that frick up how people use them. Frame rate problems are far worse. Lack of stun iframes means that guns just shred opponents to pieces. Music is much weaker and even 'minor' details like the title/intro sequence just feel 'off' and less professional compared to how clean and stylish Goldeneye was. The only real interest I have in the decomp is the possibility of it supporting Goldeneye mechanics/weapons.

I feel the same. PD is by far inferior when it comes to the basis of why the game is solid and enjoyable.

man how can you even feel this way? the music for perfect dark is incredible. goldeneye's soundtrack is good but the James Bond melodies get monotonous. stylistically and graphically perfect dark is way better, nothing against goldeneye but it's a 1997 N64 game.

The 360 is the only console I know of that's completely impossible to softmod. They're easy enough to find on eBay but you're shit out of luck if you aren't comfortable with using a soldering iron and I imagine prices for modded consoles will skyrocket after the XBLA marketplace is shut down in June.

The neat think about the GE remake is that just pushing a button it switch between the remastered and the classic graphics. I actually used it a couple times in Statue and Depot, because the new graphics disoriented me since I was more used to the N64 version.
I don't know if it's usual since I don't play many remakes, and it's literally the only game where I've seen something like this, but I think it was really neat. Actually I wonder if it was meant to be released as is, or it was just a debug thing for the people making the remake.

they ruined the design for the guns in the PD remaster. It has lost iconic faces from the Rare team and Miyamoto. Other than that, it's great.

Timesplitters 1 single player is barebones as frick, so I would agree for that. However, the other two are fantastic. They rank around the same as Goldeneye and PD.

The cancelled Goldeneye remaster looked incredible to me. Yeah, I can nit pick the frick out of the textures. But I think both are good. I love both games on the N64, and owned them both. I don;t subscribe to the 'aged like milk' bullshit either. The Single Player in Goldeneye is still fun to play. I use to bring my N64 over to my frineds place on the weekends with Goldeneye and someone with bring some additional controllers, and it would be total couch death match mayhem. Which is something that you could not say about many of the other console games from the time. Perfect Dark really just took the Goldeneye template and just added more things to it. Perfect Dark felt 'stacked' for an N64 cartridge. The amount of single player and multiplayer features were incredible,

I know I'm super late to the game here, but you can change your control scheme to 1.2, and then in your emulator remap your controller to swap the c-buttons and the control stick -- and BAM, it's got modern twin-stick controls. Best experience out there.
