How can characters from a 30 year old game who look barely more human than lego minifigs be infinitely more endearing and memorable than anything that has come out of the recent era of photorealistic models with professional voice actors?

because photorealism sucks
came here to post this, cartoonish designs beat realism in soul
There is nothing wrong with photorealism, but the reason why characters in old games are more endearing is that back then game designers put things in games because they wanted to make a game. Today game designers put things into games because they think they have to, and avoid putting things into games because they think they can't, and that's the first thing you always see, instead of the actual contents. It's not even about failing to get immersed in a fictional world. It's even failing to immerse you in a game.
I embrace the cringe, I designed my game as a modern day historical au with magic and stuff.
Hand-crafting = art.
And ye olde vidya was practically pure handcraft.
my wife 🙂

Filling in the gaps with your imagination vs an imperfect representation of reality. The closer and closer something gets to being realistic the more things our minds notice it's errors, basically uncanny valley. In the case of realistic rendering it's usually ray-tracing and subsurface scattering for skin. Without proper scattering to make skin look normal, it comes off looking plastic.
>Filling in the gaps with your imagination
I literally can't wrap my head around what people mean by this. Whenever I play a game from that era I'm not filling in anything, I just accept that's what the game looks like. I'm not trying to construct my own imaginative interpretation of Barney in Half Life, I just accept the only muscle on his face is his jaw and that he doesn't have fingers.
>Whenever I play a game from that era I'm not filling in anything
Picture an apple and rotate it in your head right now anon.
You know, I was going to ">inb4 apple meme" but decided against it right at the last second.
At least I know I called it.
>You know, I was going to ">inb4 apple meme" but decided against it right at the last second.
>At least I know I called it.
atleast you acknowledge your shortcomings anon
godbless
i thought this was a meme, are there really people out there that cant picture objects in their heads? holy shit the npc meme is real
Nta but I daily take the time to lie in bed and close my eyes to continue my weeks long story of me being isekai'd into a fantasy world and gathering a harem of monster girls. All fully visualised with bodies, faces, clothes, colors, environments, enemies and voices. I pity the fools who can't daydream anything they want as 3d or 2d as they wish.
I don't understand how this can be possible. You know what an apple looks like. How can you not have a picture in your head if you KNOW what it looks like?
>How would you feel if you could picture an apple in your head?
>I don't understand I can't picture an apple
It's hard to describe.
I know what apples look like, I can also describe to you in full detail what fictional characters look like and even draw them from memory.
But I don't actually SEE them. When I close my eyes all I see is black.
Aphantasia is common among autistic folks like me. It's like my brain isn't wired normally. I don't think visually, I don't even think linguistically. Ideas are like abstract things floating around in my mind, and I just know and think about things without the need for words or images.
I think my own personal brand of autism is very different then, because I am supremely visually oriented.
Same, also diagnosed autist and I have an extremely overactive imagination, it's very easy for me to daydream or imagine the worlds of stories I read.
It's a good kind to have.
It's literally just morons like you and him thinking that you should be able to literally see an apple with your eyes, rather than simply imagining it.
ideas > technical quality
This is the first and most important thing about art that no one seems to get. Value in art is not the sum of how shiny its assets are. Assets exist to express ideas, if there's no good ideas then the assets are a vehicle of nothing. Something will only ever be as good as the quality of its ideas. You can make complete dogshit in terms of visuals and assets and as long as the ideas are good and interesting it carries everything. There are loads of examples of this all throughout history that no one seems to pay attention to.
That's only part of it. It's more like that higher fidelity assets means more work has to be done to resolve the space with ideas. There is a finite amount of effort to spend and if more of that goes into the assets then they're essentially making more plate and less meal.
This sort of "your brain makes up more when there's less to see" rhetoric only describes part of the magic. This ignores the inherent value that has to exist in the art itself for it to work.
This is also part of it and a reason things are falling apart. Instead of making things organically because they have ideas, they're copying what they see already exists and make things according to just "the way you're supposed to do it", which strips all meaning from the product.
OH MY GOD
WE'RE DOOMED
Limitation breeds SOVL
realism takes away a lot of freedom, even for models. you have a lot more constraints. an overly exaggerated open mouth like in OP would look horrible in a realistic model, so you can't do it
photorealism was only cool the first time then i quickly realized that it was lame because it just looks like real life and thats boring. not like real life cant look exciting but you know these people put the lowest effort possible in their games these days
Same reason why TF2 and Punch-Out characters are timeless, stereotypes are awesome.
Gabe himself says realism is not fun. Make videogames great again. Death to the normies who pozzed vidya!
Because you spend the first 30 minutes seeing the scientists act like people so that players get attached enough to care for them
killing them is still fun through
i like to pretend gordon coom all over his enemies when he kills them. and that includes scientists.
the blue spray is supposed to be cum
Take a normal person and exaggerate everything about them. Of course they stick out more.
STAHP
I refuse to go another step!
I like the HD designs.
Especially Barnie.
they feel like retextured WoW characters
style and substance over photorealism and half hearted, phoned in performances.
all that to say, you get out what you put in.
The corny acting and automaton-like animation give them actual SOUL
>STOP
>DO YOU. HEAR. SOMETHING.
>...
>MY. ASS
>IS. HEAVY.
I think enemies that repeat voicelines are annoying but I would never remember ENEMIES EVERYWHERE and SPARE NO ONE otherwise.
Reminder that Gordon hasn't had an actual chance to sleep since the night before Black Mesa and has been overdosing on morphine ever since
They had something called "soul"
Because games made by passionate people who put their blood, sweat and tears into their labors of love result in those games being full of SOVL.
Look at Max Payne: they had no money to make in game cutscenes so they went with the comic book panels and used their own likenesses and those of their family members in them.
Having a shoe string budget forces you to raise to the occasion and that also results in SOVL.
It's called soul.
I can't be bothered right now.
Nostalgia
>no memorable lines
>no good story
>games all play like shit, the only thing they excel at is losing money
gee I wonder why we haven't had any good characters lately from photorealistic models and professional voice actors
I think Half-Life 1 along with Star Fox 64 must have the most 1:1 ratio of memorable lines to amount of dialogue overall. There's not as much dialogue as other games like Deus Ex, but basically every line in the two games is memeable.
