By including more spin-off characters. There's a whole slew of DK, Wario, and RPG characters they could use instead of padding out the roster with babies, generic enemies, and recolors.
I don't trust Nintendo with multiplayer games anymore. Ever since Splatoon, they've had a bad habit of launching games incomplete and then finishing them later under the guise of "free updates". Either that or selling the rest of the game as "DLC".
They think this increases the longevity of games, but it has the opposite effect.
