How come F-Zero had such little cultural impact compared to Wipeout, despite the former being a better series? every modern anti-grav racer is basically a copy of Wipeout.

That isn't even a hot take. The series was abandoned by nintendo because it sold badly. That's all.

Fast Racing is mostly F-Zero with a bit of Wipeout mostly references in the visuals.

If even SEGA couldn't save your racing game franchise from dying and being buried, it wasn't good to begin with.

    >despite the former being a better series?

Disagree, but isn't it obvious? Wipeout's presentation is as slick you can get. Top tier art and music that had its finger on the pulse of everything cool at the time of its release.

Wipeout was demo'd in, and had its soundtrack played in UK nightclubs.

F-Zero was a game for 8 year olds.

Wipeout's presentation is boring as all hell. I hate that minimalist look and gay bar music.

With the exception of one game that's a literal modern port of Wipeout, most futuristic racers seem to split the difference, with F-Zero's speed and Wipeout's setting.

probably halo-effect from ninty-stuff still being viewed as child-toys back then and psx-games as mature games for mature gamers such as myself.
plus the cameo of the wipeout-prototype-concept-whatever in the 1995-movie "Hackers" was nice, though I doubt many people would recognize it as such
and the banger background-music of wipeout, of course.

F-Zero X bombed and was on console that didn't sell as high as the playstation. Wipeout in contrast were big hits.

The OST. F-Zero has great tunes but Wipeout had The Chemical Brothers and Orbital.

Because Wipeout is F-Zero with Mario Kart-style weapons and a electronica/acid house soundtrack. It appeals more to the casual crowd brought in by the launch of the Playstation then the hardcore gamers playing F-Zero on SNES/N64.

Show you haven't played Wipeout in a long time. Combat race is only one type of race available. You have eliminator, zone(best racing mode ever), detonator, zone battle, fast lap. Oh and weapons is just a race option not something mandatory.

Wouldn't even be mentioned so often if it wasn't a Nintendo licence

F-Zero X has a stellar metal aesthetic. The art design in that game alone sets it apart from Wipeout. It doesn't even feel like a Nintendo property.
Wipeout will always be, and should be, held near higher tiers of forgettable, stylish, yuppie knock-offs. Lumines to Tetris, baby.

(look at the fricking opening to this game. the UI. this shit is a lost art. looking like human wizards made some magic in this game. Who cares about the outdated gameplay. This shit is apples to oranges. So much polish in it. You an shine this turd, but Wipeout is a fart. Unusable.)

here's a longplay of Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour. it sold better than Wipeout, you can get it for cheaper on eBay, and it's a much better game.

F-Zero is more cartoony, thus looks childish. WipeOut has that cool cyberpunk aesthetic that's stylish. And this comes from someone who likes F-Zero, too.
