Do you really think Metacritic even correctly resembles what game quality was like? even American Wasteland surpasses 2. The PS1 games are the most dated ones.
THUG missions sucked. Cooler combos sure, but THPS4 did everything THUG did well, better except for the off the board mechanics. Also good games being too dated is a pathetic meme. You get used to a game, even if it's "dated" extremely quickly. If THPS2 had better levels or a better engine the datedness wouldn't matter. It's just something to adjust to if you're used to newer games.
It's so hard to choose between THPS2 or THPS3 for PS1 as the best one. I feel 2 has slightly better levels and music but 3's updated mechanics while still being in the same engine makes the gameplay so much better. 5th gen THPS3 just feels like THPS2 but slightly better. THPS2+3 would have been a much better game than 1+2. Also frick 4.

Skateboarding is extremely technical and it translated well to dual analog controls. Gamers love these nuanced games and it was basically 'perfected' quickly and only got more and more technical as later games, like SKATE, were released. Hell, even Spyro's skateboarding minigame was competent. It just translated well to video games.
Both Tony Hawk 3 and 4 on PS2 are easily superior.

Isn't the frame rate shit?
Yes. I can't keep it at stable 60fps when emulating sadly so I just sucked up the shitty 30fps

I've always hated that this game has a spot so high.
Not only is this not the best Tony Hawk game, it's not even the best version of THPS2. Dreamcast port absolutely destroys PS1.
I'm sure all 8 people with a Dreamcast were really happy about that.
