It's not a journalists' opinion, dumbass. The article is literally just telling you that Microsoft themselves thinks the game failed. Now go back to lurking, troony
The problem with Microsoft is that they make those companies rich, so the companies become lazy. Look at Inafune, after he received all that money he stopped working and released a shtty product probably made by 4 cheap code monkeys
It might not even be a storagelet issue for him. He could be an Australian where download speeds are still measured in kilobytes. Imagine calling yourself a first world country and your average download speed is even in the top 50 world wide.
Halo and Gears of War are irrelevant nowadays. They are relics of two console generations past and should have ended with the conclusion of their respective trilogies. Dragging them past those conclusions was stupid and peak soulless. Besides, you were in high school, what, 13-15 years ago? Still wanting more of that at your age is kind of sad, no?
Genuinely shit story. I don't even remember gears 4. I vaguely remember 5. Didn't buy either of them not that I give a shit because 3 was the ending. Should have done a prequel game or something else.
Interesting that you say that because I recently replayed 4 after a year and I forgot almost everything. It came to the point that my brain was outright censoring the shit story from my mind as I progress thru the game.
Lack of variety in enemy encounters compared to the previous games. Up to Gears of War 3 there were all the variations of the Locusts, and hollow creatures like the brumak, reavers, serapede, corpser, bloodmount, etc. The lambent added mutated variations that could change in the middle of a fight. Throw some gimick weapons into the sandbox and you have a decent cover shooter. Gears of War 4 didn't have anything like that. It was robots for A WHOLE ACT, followed by gooey not-locusts with a reskinned wretch, swarm creatures that are mostly relegated to mini bosses, the locusts again, and closes off with hacked robots. There's no twist to make it interesting, it plays like any other cover shooter. I thought Gears 5 was going to introduce off the rails vehicle sections and that would have been great, but it turned out to be non-combat, open world sections with collectible upgrades and exposition dumps. Also bullet sponge zombie robots that introduce stealth sections. Frick that
Well said. Gears 5 especially was a disaster. I don’t know how they could think a story about bunch of bros on rhino steroids killing scary monsters would work well turned into a fricking (poorly made) open world shooter starring a mentally ill woman and her quipping black sidekick no one cared about
I feel like ALL of the people that criticism Gears 5 never fricking played it. The orignal Gears games has always been about the trauma of war and family. Just because the cast is different, it doesn't mean the messaged changed. Second, only 2 chapters in a game with 15 chapters are open world. Hell, Kait and Del mission last for for a single act before the rest of the gang is back together, and the first fricking act is all about JD. It's like people saw the trailer and think they played the entire fricking game.
There's already like 10 games for it and it is unironically too masculine for modern game developers to attempt. I didn't even like them that much either, I remember thinking that the guns just weren't fun to use and enemies took too long to kill.
Speaking from personal experience, I got Gears of War for PC when it came out and had a great time all those years ago, but then Microsoft made the sequel Xbox exclusive and never released on PC again. I stopped caring about the series after that.
Gears still has its niche. The difference for why it's not popular now is because back then, it's was one of the few big shooters at the time. Same with Halo. The market got so big that other games took its slot. I bet you even if Halo Infinite was the best game in the series, it wouldn't be anywhere near Halo 3's popularity. It also doesn't help that the Xbone sold like shit compared to the 360. >Inb4 but CoD is still relevant
That's because even if they make a bad game, there will always be next year to change its reputation. And in the case of Playstation, it's the only big shooter they got to play. The Gears franchise will be fine.
It's insane how they burned the potential they had with Killzone. KZ2 is one of the best console shooters ever made and KZ3 was just... Call of Duty.
Then they hit a interesting new direction with Shadowfall, which turned out to be complete garbage after the opening mission.
Adding classes to Horde to make it a grindfest with boxes and cards and just making Horde worse in general and changing the campaign structure killed it for me. I used to do Horde and co-op all the time on the 360, way more than regular multiplayer and there used to be a big community for it. Now it's dead because grinding classes and replaying 5's open sections is a chore, and nobody likes shooting robots.
A series either dies in its prime or lives long enough to be pozzed by modern writing. Consider most games back then to be finished by the third sequel, better that way.
Aside from what's already been said, Gears MP has a bit of a learning curve so I get why they have a hard time retaining new players. It's all about the gnasher meta and I get why that turns off a lot of potential new players. And any time they try to stray from that they just piss off the core fan-base.
I don't mind gnasher meta because if the people who hated it got their way you still have multiple headshot focused weapons, classic power weapon spawning that demands map control, and movement in general being hurdles that will filter out casuals. People think they'll o better if they get rid of the shotgun but really they're just going to get a boltok to the face and a smoke grenade shoved up their ass.
Why didn't just make a prequel taking place during the pendulum wars, and then slowly introduce the locust along with younger versions of the protagonists?
>story shou'ldve ended at three >tried to pass on the torch to a bunch of buttholes that no one gives a flying frick about >how shit better bring back Marcus and Baird because we killed everyone else off!
Then again the only reason why these games still get any money is because the hispanics are too busy braining each other in the multiplayer to give two shits about the story,
the first few games were insanely popular. People loved the story, especially co op. It just became a cash grab where you weren't really invested in the world anymore.
4 and 5 collectively point to nowhere, kinda like the current star wars trilogy. it feels messy, new cast feels too quirky and comedic rather than moody and sarcastic like the originals. also, the whole reason they brought the swarm/locust back is beyond stupid because we saw them disintegrate at the end of 3. on top of that, this is probably top toxic masculinity: the series, no wonder they gave the b***h the starring role and gave you the chance to kill JD
that game released a few years ago now.
it was pretty fun
the new ones are also better than than the old gears series. I played through all of them all before 5 released. 2 and 3 were pretty bad.
It really isn’t. The main character is a woman, but it’s not like she goes off about how this is all mens’ fault or that white gears caused the pendulum wars or anything. If anything it could be interpreted as slightly misogynistic since she’s constantly having emotional breakdowns while her male squad mates are cool and collected.
JD was cool, and Del had his moments as well. The only one I found consistently annoying (other than Kait obv) was the Iranian guy with the fauxhawk, but you’re kind of supposed to find him annoying
Gears multiplayer has always had a problem with it's high skill ceiling and new players. Multiplayer in 5 is probably my favorite by far, hive busting was good fun too.
5 was breddy good. kinda sucked because they kept the boomers around which was cringe as shit. kinda like how in films, they keep the old fricks around and give them an AC/DC song scene, being able to kickass again with full on invincibility.
That hasn’t been a single franchise that remained successful after the lead director/key people have left.
Creative people want to do creative stuff not recycle the same ideas over and over, shocker
Dom and Marcus bromance and the overall grittiness of the trilogy was kino. Series ended after 3.
Nu-Gears features lesbian Mary Sue with Marcus' son who's a literal downie and game became too streamlined and slick like any other 3rd person console shooter.
Literally the product of it's time >grown green and gray >cover up shooter >3rd person where the guy takes up half of the screen
Reload mechanic is the only thing that's actually can hold up today
The audience for the Gears franchise are right wing dude bros who loved 80s movies.
Gears 4 is boring MCU garbage and Gears 5 is feminist trash. I didn't even finish Gears 4, went to Gears 5 and didn't finish that either. Although I have to say one positive thing about Gears 5, it looked significantly better in it's environments and has at least better set pieces than Gears 4.
Because it's a moronic "soak up bullets then crouch behind a wall doing nothing" game. They were never fun and were only played by 90 IQ morons due to their massive marketing campaigns.
You've literally never played it lmao. The whole game is amount flanking and getting into the mindset of your opponent. It's about tricking them into thinking that have the advantage to push only to drop on them when they least expect it. It's probably the highest IQ multiplayer shooter ever made.
Nice argument troonygoblin. >I'm bad at video games and don't want to be made a fool of in multiplayer games but let me tell you why this game is badly designed

Overall sure, 3 certainly was the last one with SOVL. But the multiplayer continued to get better even into 4 and 5. 5 has an awesome horde mode too but I wouldn't bother with the campaigns after 3.

>that feign toward point then a quick left juke into instakilling the last guy
So seamless. I fricking miss Gears of War MP.
The same reason no one cares about Halo after 3.
The series ran its course, ended with a clear finale just to end up getting sequels that had to resort to ass pulls to continue their stories on top of being downgraded gameplay wise.
Gears 4 and 5 have less content than 3 and also have worse Horde modes by far. That hivebuster extraction mode in 5 is cool on paper but sucks wiener in practice.
most people hated 3, even though i liked it. And were generally burnt out on the formula.
It's just one of those IPs that had no life after a trilogy.
And to have any chance at keeping it afloat after 3, you have to eventually change core things, which turns it into a new game. So you're fundamentally at odds.
Gears and Dead Rising were pretty much perfect games, the sequels could only do worse and they did, by the third installment the franchises were dead.
Prove me wrong.
Gears was a product of its time. Dudebro culture isn't anywhere close to what it used to be so no one really cares about a bunch of a big dumb roidmutts shooting big dumb roid aliums from behind chest height walls.
And even the few people who would still care about >BRUH DUDE BRUH DID YOU SEE MY DUDE SHOOT THAT GUY BRUH THAT WAS FRICKIN BRUTAL BRUH HELL YEAH
can no longer give a shit because the series has been hijacked by strong independent women.
Gears 1,2 and 3 were great. 2 had the best overall "feel" and 3 had the best gameplay.
I liked the 4 player coop in 3 a lot too. It added a lot to the sense of you fighting big battles in a squad as the story was culminating.
I thought 4 and 5 were good overall but not needed. The movement and guns felt good, the graphics were great. The story was a bit tired, but not horrible.
The main problem for me was the lack of enemy variety. You were fighting the same three enemies over and over through both games, which made it boring and made horde mode really boring too.
Which sucks because it was fun, but it would have been amazing if it had the same enemy variety as 3.
I really miss playing Gears and having fun.
>which made it boring and made horde mode really boring too.
The worst thing about Gears 4 horde was the turret meta. So fricking boring. I liked the idea of roles and perks in horde mode but it was a net negative in 4 while being great in 5 but the only problems being how much of a grind it is to level up the classes.
had a lot of fun with Gears 1 and 2 on 360 with local multiplayer, I was in the military and we played it a lot in the shop while deployed, since then it’s been shit, tried to get into Gears 5 and everything felt fat and slow, the character designs are still the dumb roided Americans look and feel
I was tooling along playing Gears (not of War) 5 and it was a pretty solid experience until that short haired chick started freaking out, deserted her squad and screamed "I'M DOING THIS THIS IS FOR ME!!!!", and everyone was like...ok, we won't shoot you on the spot.
Promptly uninstalled.
Whatever happened to Dom and Marcus sometimes hating what they do, but still grudgingly doing it, and doing it well? Imagine Marcus shouting "Anya, it's a giant worm! They're sinking cities with a giant worm!" and then promptly running away to go to a psychologist appointment or something for some self-help.
Compare Microsoft IPs to the other big players: >Mario has no continuity >Metroid has gotten 5 games in its main canon in nearly 40 years >Pokemon was built from the ground up to be ever expanding >God Of War just moved to another mythos entirely when the old one dried up >Ratchet & Clank is all about infinite amounts of planets across infinite dimensions and timelines
In contrast Microsoft games don't have an ending and never will but they're also not built around there being no ending. You're playing to get through a part of a journey that eventually just stops.
Best example of this is Master Chief being on his third round of "finishing the fight"
The campaign mode Gears is a linear story-driven game with a completely meaningless story because it will never end and you know it.
Of all the interesting stuff they could've done with the franchise, they chose to make a movie game.
Sony mind broke Microsoft but nobody sees it cause their attempts were subpar, similar with Halo Infinite.
I'm so tired of wars.
And gears.
Microsoft are incapable of taking a franchise they acquired from someone else and makings it successful, just look at Halo.
Indeed, Microsoft sucks balls, they are so soulless that they simple don't care if 343 or others are ruining their franchises
Wow, so game journalists are only good when they parrot what you want huh?
It's not a journalists' opinion, dumbass. The article is literally just telling you that Microsoft themselves thinks the game failed. Now go back to lurking, troony
So what? You're using a tabloid paper as your source.
"troony". Lmao, only people still obsessed with Halo's old days are more pathetic than trannies.
r.i.p. forza
Indeed. MS is where creativity and soul goes to die.
Yep, Microsoft treats their IPs like Excel. They just want to keep releasing the same shir over and over again.
The problem with Microsoft is that they make those companies rich, so the companies become lazy. Look at Inafune, after he received all that money he stopped working and released a shtty product probably made by 4 cheap code monkeys
bingo
Forza Horizon 5 is the most phoned-in, asset-reused, lazy-ass lump of mediocrity I've seen in a good long while.
No hope for the new Motorsport.
Halo was never good, only toddlers who never seen a decent fps in their life slurped it up
>t. I had no friends in high school.
Because Microsoft insisted on milking it long after it passed its creative worth just like they do everything else.
No original trilogy remaster on PC and coalition keep trying to recapture how gears 1 felt, when gears 2 and 3 were better
Because it's like 150gb for a 5 hour campaign
>150gb is a lot in 2023

>Should have done a prequel game
They did. And it was shit.
gears 4 was starting to look like a new direction for the franchise with a decent premise and easily could have been a great start to a new trilogy
gears 5 instead was a "direction." we all stopped caring.

I'm surprised how shitty Gears 1 and Gears 1 Remastered feel. Literally have nothing going for them except for the tactical reload.

Nice try Trannie
I just want gow trilogy remastered. The frick Microsoft so drunk with gow1 remastered only
Gears 3 killed the series. You can't have Gears with open maps, loadouts and TDM, there is no reason to play it any more.
There's already like 10 games for it and it is unironically too masculine for modern game developers to attempt. I didn't even like them that much either, I remember thinking that the guns just weren't fun to use and enemies took too long to kill.
Gears was a game that pioneered a lot of game mechanics but evolved the wrong way and now practically nobody enjoys it.
Ended with Gears of War 3. Everything else afterwards is fan fiction.
Stronk woman is the problem.
Gears lost it's identity what made it popular in the first place. People lost interest.
Speaking from personal experience, I got Gears of War for PC when it came out and had a great time all those years ago, but then Microsoft made the sequel Xbox exclusive and never released on PC again. I stopped caring about the series after that.
PC gamers didn't bite because it didn't have aim assist.
>why did everyone stop caring about the high test franchise after they started marketing it with twinks and a female mc
the world will never know
Gears still has its niche.

Then they hit a interesting new direction with Shadowfall, which turned out to be complete garbage after the opening mission.
GOW3 was the end of the series. There was literally no need for anything further.
Plus, the later Gear games are full of women, and that's gay.
>Gear games are full of women
So was Gears 3 you stupid fricking moron.
Adding classes to Horde to make it a grindfest with boxes and cards and just making Horde worse in general and changing the campaign structure killed it for me. I used to do Horde and co-op all the time on the 360, way more than regular multiplayer and there used to be a big community for it. Now it's dead because grinding classes and replaying 5's open sections is a chore, and nobody likes shooting robots.
its a snoy movie game
A series either dies in its prime or lives long enough to be pozzed by modern writing. Consider most games back then to be finished by the third sequel, better that way.
How are any of the new Gears pozzed?
It's pozzed since 3 with womyn soldiers
yes
See? Here is the problem. Men dont like these characters, and gamer girls want selfinsert who look cool not like your ugly schizo feminist
>Men hate annoying women
>Women prefer to play slow paced games
This will cater to????????
It doesn't have to be popular. It just has to upset the chuds.
Cover shooters I kind of dated aren't they
The true Gears of War series ended with 3 they only call it Gears now
Aside from what's already been said, Gears MP has a bit of a learning curve so I get why they have a hard time retaining new players. get woke go broke. it's that easy
Why didn't just make a prequel taking place during the pendulum wars, and then slowly introduce the locust along with younger versions of the protagonists?

Also say what you will but Gears of War was the best GoW of them all.
yeah, in 5 you have a huge open area you can use a snow skiff and look for upgrades and shit
that game released a few years ago now.
it was pretty fun
the new ones are also better than than the old gears series. I played through all of them all before 5 released. 2 and 3 were pretty bad.

Any answer other than "because they handed it to a soulless goyslop factory to pump out inferior goyslop" is wrong.
The last game is extremely pozzed, actually
It really isn’t. The main character is a woman, but it’s not like she goes off about how this is all mens’ fault or that white gears caused the pendulum wars or anything. Nah, they're all trash, none of them are memorable at all and I didn't give a shit about any any of them.
Gears 1-3 has far better characters.
>Gears 1-3 has far better characters
Well sure, but that doesn’t refute what I said
JD and Del being slighlty less shit than Kait and the other dude does not make them good characters.
Gears multiplayer has always had a problem with it's high skill ceiling and new players. Multiplayer in 5 is probably my favorite by far, hive busting was good fun too.
ttake away wall bouncing exploit and mexishits have nothing
I’m a fan of the series in general but 4 and 5 just weren’t as good as 1 and 2 I miss the epic scale battles of 2 and 3

Campaign
3 > 2 > 1 > 4 > J:A > 5 > J
Multiplayer
5 > 4 > 3 > UE > 2 > J > 1
Co-op
5 > 3 > 4 > 2 > J
>which made it boring and made horde mode really boring too.
The worst thing about Gears 4 horde was the turret meta. So fricking boring. I liked the idea of roles and perks in horde mode but it was a net negative in 4 while being great in 5 but the only problems being how much of a grind it is to level up the classes.
had a lot of fun with Gears 1 and 2 on 360 with local multiplayer, I was in the military and we played it a lot in the shop while deployed, since then it’s been shit, tried to get into Gears 5 and everything felt fat and slow, the character designs are still the dumb roided Americans look and feel
women should never be the main character, only the eye candy side character
know your market 101
makes Abby from TLOU2 look like a prom queen
If it is not on the Nintendo Switch it is not a video game. Wrong board
Compare Microsoft IPs to the other big players:
>Mario has no continuity
>Metroid has gotten 5 games in its main canon in nearly 40 years
>Pokemon was built from the ground up to be ever expanding
>God Of War just moved to another mythos entirely when the old one dried up
>Ratchet & Clank is all about infinite amounts of planets across infinite dimensions and timelines
Overexplained shit lost its charm. Simple as
it ended with 3 there's no fricking reason for it to continue
