You have to remember that the designs you see there are only like that because of a new guy being head of design. Artemis and Mermaid did not look like that in the previous games

I forgot mermaid was introduced in the fourth game expansion and had the same design in that game as in the fifth.

But Dementer did not look like that in the previous games

story is trash and presentation/style is way worse
smt 5 in particular reused the soulless TMS UI
not to mention all SMT games after 3 were stuck on handhelds while persona kept getting home console releases
the only reason smt 5 sold as well as it did is unironically persona 5's sales

      >the soulless TMS UI
Literally one of the best things Atlus has come up with in years.

Because unlike Persona, nobody cares about what's going on in terms of story, and with gameplay being nigh identical, naturally the thing with the more interesting narrative and characters will become more popular.

    >why is a high school friend simulator more popular than a dungeon crawler
That's like asking why Animal Crossing is more popular than Metroid.

Persona is normalgay anime shit designed to appeal to anyone who likes that, SMT is a traditional hardcore JRPG that only hardcore JRPG fans are gonna like
