Mark doesn't want an MMORPG, he wants something that can be used IRL as a tool, but that it is in VR, he literally wants what WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger became (a communication tool that tons of people use both privately and professionally in their businesses) but integrating VR into it.
This is not the product that will do this, nor will be the first one to attempt it. A tool like this one will come someday, but not as bluntly as CHAT ROOMS, BUT IN VEEE ARRRR.
What Mark paid out of the ass to develop is not the equivalent tool he hoped, is not even a gen behind, he literally took an existing thing and applied to a new medium, he didn't make what he wanted, he made e-mail, something that already existed (regular mail) but on a new platform.
Metaverse might catch on as e-mail did, but it will take time, and it will never become what Mark wanted it to become.

He's definitely into VR shit, given every time you see him talk about the hardware in interviews and such he seems slightly less like a robot/alien pretending to be human, but he's likely not really into the gaming side of it. He knows he has to appeal to gamers at least a little bit to really push for mass adoption, but he couldn't care less about the quality of the games his own company pays for.
It's also worth noting that MMOs wouldn't have as wide of a reach as he wants. Even if VR gave MMOs a Renaissance and it was like peak wow all over again, that's nothing compared to his ultimate goal, widespread use by normies. Everyone watching movies, hanging out with friends, having office meetings for work, everything in VR, on his platform.

The only reason phone gaming is still shit is because most people are on either old hand-me-down flagships or midrange phones, and the fact that gaming on the phone itself sucks, the power is there no doubt about it
Android is the other reason phone gaming sucks. The Switch uses a downclocked version of the nvidia shield and the shield even had some actual native games ported to it that run significantly worse than the switch version. Mostly due to Android being a very non-game centric OS and having to use OpenGL with a bad non-game centric driver instead of a good modern API. Modern Android supports Vulkan but Vulkan isn't hugely popular due in large part by being a rather convoluted API that tends towards LOWER performance if you fail to understand all its nuance and also very low adoption in phones and also very poor drivers for the SoCs that do the vulkan stuff well.
