? No it's not. That's not how audience/social stratification works. By nature, now that gaming is so large, AAA stuff can't serve enthusiasts and be as profitable as it wants to. There have been some peaks and valleys in this, Dark Souls and now BG3 have banged into the industry's dense skull repeatedly that people can handle and want more, but the industry still doesn't get it.
Nonetheless, "Baba is You" or "Noita" are never going to be mainstream AAA games, because they sort of can't be. it's not in their DNA. They can only serve limited audiences, but if you're an enthusiast you might be part of many audiences for different games like this.
Me, personally, I play anything. But AAA mainstream audiences do not play anything, even if they want something more like Dark Souls or BG3, those are still effectively casual level, introductory video games.
This isn't necessarily an "issue" and people aren't at "fault" there are just different markets that get served differently. I do think the AAA industry is about to take a big upswing toward the positive in the next 4-5 years.
Being an enthusiast is irrelevant when you play anything, I am in that boat as well. What needs to happen for a golden age is a renaissance of very good Triple A games that aren't trying to make the best thing ever. They're just trying to make something good to the best of their ability. Like, do you think the Valve guys or the creators of Space Invaders were doing it to impress anyone but themselves and their peers? Or they were artists trying to make a point about something?
You can't have a scope so large, very few people can pull that off. Not everyone is going to like what you made, their are people who still have never played some of the most popular games of all time. Don't waste your time pandering to them, they should make games for them, that speaks to them, that is them; because Video Games are art.

Mario Wonder brought a bunch of good changes from Odyssey and unlike TotK it didn't copy paste 70% of the levels from the last game.
I still liked it, but considering that after NSMB1 we got super safe and boring 2D games until Mario Wonder (like 17 years of not having a 2D Mario that does more than the absolute bare minimum). I don't really see that as much of a win personally

It's not exactly a smart group, given that they were happy to nominate Dave the Diver for best indie and pretend that some new content made Cyberpunk 2077 a new game.

Sony and MS never have enough of their own shit to show. TGA is probably the most dense event of the year in terms of announcements people are excited about. Cramming an award show into that is weird, sure, but it's more of a framing device than anything. It's a way to capture attention for the industry.

The exact same shit happened with Skyward Sword, it was getting 10/10's across the board on release and now its generally agreed upon to be one of the weakest mainline Zelda's.

I used to be a moderator on LegendOfZelda.com. There was a continual downward spiral of apathy amongst the fanbase as the years went on and each new game released. The members were constantly talking enthusiastically about other games on other systems. We would have regular staff meetings to brainstorm ideas on how we could improve community engagement amongst members.
By the time Skyward Sword released it practically killed the site. Many longterm fans were looking over the fence at games like Skyrim and recognizing so many qualities long gone from the Zelda series.
It's a shame that the site never lived to see BotW or TotK. It was mana to longterm fans of the series.

I found Nintendo's decision bizarre, the way they "expanded" the previous map was by adding more copy+paste content. It's the famous idea of making the ocean even wider without worrying about the fricking puddle depth.
I remember theorycrafting and thinking that you'd find a city of monsters wedged into the hillsides where before there was just scaffolding (BOTW) near the Gerudo desert. I was under the illusion that Nintendo would use those 6 years to analyze that world and say: "hey, the player is in for a nice surprise when they get here and find a new unique temple/city/mining site/etc"., but what did they do, let's be honest here? They added 150+ caves and wells that are practically all identical. They've added flying islands that are all almost identical, they've added an entire extra map that looks all the same. WTF?
How hard could it be to take some level designers and have them CREATE new things in the fricking world, instead of spreading the same shallow and uninteresting content all over the world, for a fricking second time?

Tears Of The Kingdom is an astonishing achievement in game design.
One of the things which blows my mind is you can enter a Lookout tower and be instantly shot into the sky. Immediately you can see the entire expanse of the world, the draw distance disappearing over the horizon - without a hint of a loading screen.
That is fricking insane. I can't even go from room to room on my spaceship in Starfield without a loading screen. How in the name of Christ did Nintendo manage this on a toaster tablet?

Well ELDEN RING for one.
But also Vampire Survivors, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Splatoon 3, Stray, Kirby and the Forgtten Land, Mario+Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, Return to Monkey Island, Signalis, Pokemon Legends: Arceus, and God of War: RagnarockFrick you I liked it.
2022 was one of the best years for video games in nearly 20 years.
2017, 2019, and 2021 were also fantastic.

The reason Elden Ring's expansion wasn't revealed at the Game Awards is because Miyazaki realised Aonuma would be there because of ToTK and didn't want to utterly cause the man to harikiri on return to japan if they showed an Elden Ring DLC that looked more like a new game than the new Zelda up for awards did.
Miyazaki showed restraint for the soul of his countryman.

TOTK was fun because of the physics but ultimately it was a gimmick and you didn't even need to make any contraptions outside of a single section in each dungeon and there was only ever a single simple way to solve the puzzle anyway
the world had no right of being this empty and boring after 6 years when ER had less dev time and not only more content but more meaningful
and they did not fix a single issue from BOTW
TOTK is a good game like 7/10 but massively overrated, I wouldn't even put it in my top 5 of 2023 which, FWIW, is BG3, AC6, RE4R, LAD Gaiden and Phantom Liberty
