Covid inflated player numbers, especially during 5.2 (5.2 saw its active player base increase by 113%). Shadowbringers became universally acclaimed and really well reviewed, content kept coming for the game over the months during its peak, Endwalker looked very promising at the end of 2021 and became a regularly discussed expansion pretty much in a lot of places.
The last three years just massively blew up the game.

I play FFXIV on and off and it's not that it did anything right. On the contrary, FFXIV falls short in many areas and is really held back by the old 1.0 spaghetti code and a director with the same mentality as the Snakes and Sparklers guy from Joe Dirt. FFXIV is succeeding by mere happenstance because every MMO around them is outright torpedoing themselves, WoW especially. Anyone that's been playing FFXIV for a long time can shoe you signs of it doing exactly the same, it's just happening more slowly. FFXIV is laying in the same mass grave, it's just hiding among the bodies waiting to bleed out.

this, FFXIV is a themepark MMO, you're there to see the flashing lights and pretty set pieces moreso than a traditional MMO experience. There's harder difficulty stuff available, but the majority of the content is catering towards casual and mid-core players

I've said it in other threads so excuse me if I'm repetitive, but I kinda wanted to like it. I immersed myself in the world doing quests, but at all points I felt like I could be playing something better.
I'll say however that I was finally starting to get boss fights, those were decent. But otherwise I was just steamrolling through quests from one place to another.
ARR is very...dated compared to the expansions. You can tell they were going in a different direction than what ends up happening and it's pretty clunky. There's a ton of SOVL and worldbuilding though, which you need in order to really appreciate the rest of the story.
Don't use ARR as being indicative of the rest of the game, because it does get better.

Shadowbringers is the great filter. ARR is actually fun and has, compared to ShB, gameplay between the cutscenes and text walls.
Now that's a hot take. Regardless of personal taste, ShB can't be a filter for purely logistical reasons. It's too late in the game to be an effective one since everyone who gets to that point has already paid for a subscription and the expansion.
Shadowbringers was for me the start to skip cutscenes and just click through the dialogues.

The only good part of A Realm Reborn is the Coerthas section around level 35 or something like that. 2.0 is a massive filter full of ancient MMO design with shit loads of back tracking, fetch quest, and pointless dialogue that scares a lot of people off. When you finally finish ARR... you get more of the same because the content between ARR and Heavensward is even worse than ARR. Make it through that though and Heavensward is amazing. Stormblood is... ehh... Shadowbringers is Amazing, and Endwalker is either amazing or the worst thing since ARR depending on who you talk to. If you really like the overall tone of Kingdom Hearts or shounen anime you'll probably love Endwalker.
I haven't played the ARR content for years now, but didn't they go back at some point and remove a lot of the filler shit? Probably still full of a lot of it but I wonder if it's much better than it used to be.

FFXIV does an extremely shit job of incentivizing social interaction. The content is about as social as riding the bus to work. Naturally people feel autistic striking up conversations with random people on the bus, and the same principle applies here.
MMOs should incentivize social interaction mechanically, but XIV doesn't do that. Even if you watch high end raids, the players mostly just sit there in silence spamming attempts. It's not like in WoW where comms are paramount to your success.

The weakness buff used to give you a reason to be in an FC but now you can get any FC perk from squadrons. One advice people give to new raiders is DO NOT RAID WITH YOUR FC which should tell you a lot about how useful they are. Have a common interest with other players? Linkshells and third party social tools like Discord are way better and have more features than a shitty FC chat. FC house? What FC-specific perks do you get? NOTHING
Back when Diadem was still a gear gacha, you got a reason for being in an FC as you had to queue with FC mates. But for some reason, SE decided that they really do not want there to be activities you need to have an FC for (other than a gil printing machine), so they made FCs completely worthless instead.

Nah. The nice part about FFXIV is that it never feels like you missed out on anything. I genuinely feel like I could take a year or two away from the game and still come back without too much issue.
Obviously some content doesn't have the same population to it (older raids for example may be a long ass queue to get in), but you can do all of the content and catch up quite easily. The only issue is that the longer the game is out, the more you have to get through to reach endgame since you have to complete the MSQ which keeps getting longer. Thankfully, the MSQ is pretty good (outside of some notable parts) and the endgame isn't really the appeal of FFXIV anyway.

FFXIV isn't the best at anything in particular, but there's very little I can point at and say is outright bad. Obviously there are glaring issues, but nothing so disastrous or controversial that it scares away the playerbase. And honestly, even if they did frick something up down the line, there are still going to be people that will come back for the new MSQ because they just want to see what happens to the characters.

Honestly, I can't really say. WoW and FFXIV are really my only MMOs I've gotten into heavily over the years besides Runescape. I just see a lot of MMOs out there where raiding is the default endgame, so I assumed that's what people typically look for.

There's tons of stuff I wish the devs would change/fix to improve the game, but after the amount of years I spent playing WoW, getting frustrated by every single system being torn apart for something new, and having to relearn/re-grind it all, I'm quite content with the consistency.

Aside from optional instances, the vast majority of side content is boring, grindy and completely useless in terms of game progression (not that there's much of that either since they completely removed builds), Meanwhile the linear single-player storyline is always the main focus, which is a combination of mundane postal work, lots and lots of dialogue and several good emotional peaks with great multiplayer fights, because it's only then the game remember it's supposed to be a MMORPG. It's the type of game you play through once, maybe level one or two alt combat classes in roles you haven't tried yet and then drop before returning with the next bigger story expac.

xiv by now was a wide range of content so you don't have to rush to "endgame". I keep seeing recommended videos on youtube of some former wow gays that has been going through xiv at a snail's pace because they keep stopping to do side stuff after each expansion msq.

Pre-endgame content is significantly more dead than endgame content, so that's clearly not what players are doing.
You'd be surprised what content people are still doing. I was pushing eureka on the tail end of ShB and there were plenty of people doing it.
I wish they just made the raids, trial series and some of the other optional content mandatory like CT (with a new easier version of Coils obviously). The fights are great, some of them have a nice story that foreshadows later main plot elements, plus they're wonky to play afterwards since story wise they often don't make sense anymore after EW. It'd also help older players' roulettes so we wouldn't be getting fricking Crystal Tower every single day.
