Avalance's Mad Max is a 6. A 6 to me is a game that doesn't have high ambitions but is fun nonetheless, or it's hugely ambitious or falls short of its goal. Mad Max doesn't do anything particularly remarkable but it is enjoyable. A 5 is passable. 4 and below are broken in some ways.
Elden Ring is unquestionably ambitious due to its scope. It's got great art direction and good music for a video game. Its levels are tightly designed with lots of things to discover. The combat isn't anything special but it is certainly a lot of fun. It's just good, solid.

I liked Elden Ring but the open world was the least appealing aspect to me as it resulted in terrible level scaling, something soulsborne games struggle with already. And yeah while I prefer (most of) Elden Ring's bosses, at least the main story bosses, I prefer Dark Souls and Bloodborne by far overall. Of course, I treat games more akin to books. If I can't argue this game is at the same quality as a good book, I don't play it. Elden Ring has some really cool stuff in it, and since I consume content in order to either gain new perspectives/get ideas (and to have fun too of course) for my own creative writing, Elden Ring fits that build. Souls games actually make you feel fantastic after beating them. Hell, even if the game has shitty moments, you feel great after every challenge and as you dive deeper into finding the secrets of the world around you with memorable characters and epic bossfights. I don't get why people complain about a game that labels itself for what it is.
And yes, the godskin duo was a god-awful fight by far along with the boss reuse. I say it takes away a lot from the game but I wouldn't say the game is shit because I don't let small details distract me from the good shit.

It improved a lot of the mechanics from the older games and even reintroduced some of them and also did a pretty good job in going from smal areas that resembled a dungeon crawler to a massive open world.

The weapon skills became much more useful than in DS3 and served both for offensive or defensive purposes.
The dual wielding systems from both DS2 and 3 were reintroduced.
Charge attacks and slower weapons in general finally felt good to use again because of the stance break system, something that hadn't happened since DS1.
What really dragged Elden Ring down was how From wasn't able to properly adapt the multiplayer system to the open world.
Both coop and invasions feel very awkward compared to any of the previous games.

I think From could have done a lot better with Elden Ring. Too many monsters and bosses are reused too often, optional dungeon loot is almost always worthless to your character, the bosses are now designed to trick you into rolling too early or have insane combos that are hard to learn, and the game itself goes on for a region or two too long.
But despite this I really enjoyed myself for that first run. I felt a sense of adventure and discovery I hadn't experienced in a game in almost two decades and the combat was still the fun Souls content I was hoping for. I still found the flaws annoying and it slightly detracted from my overall enjoyment, but not enough to ruin the game for me. The mountaintops can frick off though. The game really should have ended at the Royal Capital and Faram Azula especially came across as unfinished content thrown into the final build.

This is my biggest problem with the gameplay. They know rolling is overpowered, so how do they fix it? Metagame the shit out of the player. Just fricking nerf it already, christ. At least they sort of buffed shields finally but against the majority of bosses they are STILL worthless because of stamina breaking basically being a one shot which is pushed into the extremes with the 20 minute long combos.

It's significantly easier than any other souls game and muh open world.
It's good, great even. However it does have some pretty severe flaws. Torrent is ass, the open world is a bit boring on subsequent playthroughs, some hotboxes are aids, some bosses are questionably designed.
But it's fun, challenging, has good lore and atmosphere, many fun build options, and most bosses are extremely fun. Overall solid 7/10

There's your answer bud. ER uses the same formula from the other Souls games, puts it on an open world, and enhances their AI to keep players on edge. It's not original, sure. But does it matter? It worked so well that the game sold to a ridiculous extent and is still being played by 18k people right now despite being a year and a half old.
