because their asthetics are very nice along while also fitting the idea of the army, their lore also fits since it shows how fanatacism and propoganda turns people into essentially unthinking machines for a crime they already resolved centuries ago all while an uncaring Imperium keeps throwing them into dangerous warzones, and their lore highlight was a fairly well doen set of campaign books

A lot of people who indulge in 40k are military history nerds, particularly from 1914-1945. Not surprising the 'WW1 guys in space' grabbed their attention. From an art perspective, they're easy to deal with since they all gas mask, so amateur animators need not worry about facial expressions when showing a bunch of them dying in no man's land. Ideally, this would mean the Armageddon Steel Legion would get the same treatment, but I guess the less obvious connections to world war uniforms made them get overshadowed, and their backstory isn't as interesting despite being more relevant to current events.

The breakout event in-lore that made the Krieg so enormously popular was Vraks. While it's true that the Krieg were always going to be popular due to the Great War Germany aesthetic, it's due to their heavy involvement during the Siege of Vraks that gave people something to point at and admire. It's like how Cadia might've been just another regiment if the Black Crusades didn't hinge on the Cadian Gate.
I don't know, I've never really liked them all that much myself.

Warhammer 40k sells itself on war and general edginess and the Krieg are all about war and edginess. And they aren't space marines so naturally hipster underdog lover mindset'd people gravitate towards them.

Is their lore still being an indispensable and favored unit of the Guards? Any general who absolutely must hold a line or must go charge into certain death without faltering goes immediately to the Krieg regiment?
There's just a lot of them and they are good at sieges.
It also helped that the Death Korps were the stars of a big sexy Forge World campaign book back in the days when Forge World consistently knocked it out of the park, so there was loads of fantastic art and miniature photography of them floating around.

Siege of Vraks was pure kino. Death Korps fluff was expanded upon from the IG codex and WD entries, and a genuinely interesting story was the result. The models at that time were also impressive. Since then however, DKoK have been flanderized to hell and have become the refuge for Wehraboo creeps who paint them up in SS Splittertarnmuster... despite the fact that they resemble a mixture of Imperial German Heer and French army circa WW1.
