They appeal to the wehraboo. That's it, the whole reason.
They actually aesthetically fit the WW1-in-hell-forever tone of the Guard in their aesthetic design, unlike the Cadians.
Gas masks are cool, wwi has seen a massive resurgence because everyone involved is dead
They are a perfect microcosm of why a lot of people like Imperial Guard
I don't mind, they're much easier to paint and I hate faces

They look cool, have a grimdark backstory and have more variety to their lore than the Armageddon Steel Legion, who seem to only either fight Orks or Khorne stuff on their homeworld.
because their asthetics are very nice along while also fitting the idea of the army, their lore also fits since it shows how fanatacism and propoganda turns people into essentially unthinking machines for a crime they already resolved centuries ago all while an uncaring Imperium keeps throwing them into dangerous warzones, and their lore highlight was a fairly well doen set of campaign books
I just think they are neat, the WW1 aesthetics in space are cool.
Although now that I think about it I don’t think there’s any Guard regiment that I don’t like, I even like those green pyjama indentured servant guys.
Jesus Tittyfricking Christ just imagine her being captured by a bunch of Nurgle-worshipping freaks at Vraks. What they would have done to her with their foul STD-infested pus-dripping wieners.

If your bar for a faction is how important they are and live out your power fantasies through plastic models that says more about you than Death Korps fans.

All this thread is convincing me is that bringing Krieg will make my opponent seethe impotently. Which is a shame because they're expensive and I like Catachans better aesthetically, anyway.
A lot of people who indulge in 40k are military history nerds, particularly from 1914-1945. Not surprising the 'WW1 guys in space' grabbed their attention. From an art perspective, they're easy to deal with since they all gas mask, so amateur animators need not worry about facial expressions when showing a bunch of them dying in no man's land. Ideally, this would mean the Armageddon Steel Legion would get the same treatment, but I guess the less obvious connections to world war uniforms made them get overshadowed, and their backstory isn't as interesting despite being more relevant to current events.
Death Korps of Krieg >Our planet rebelled and rather than kneel to those herectics we initiated M.A.D and even then we contiuned to fight a long war in a irradiated wasteland that was once a verdent world, doing so transformed us into nigh emotionless drones willing to throw ourselves at enemy defenses. Now, to pay pendance for our ancestors trangression, we raise armies to fight in service to the emperor. Death is our redemption.
Armageddon Steel Legion >There so many goddamn orks holy shit where are they comming from? BRING MORE TANKS!
people like clone troopers; simple as. Meant to be expendable, yet trained and drilled from day 1 to be the best soldiers possible. some guy is always going to resonate a lot more with people than a golden unkillable demigod.
>It's not like they've done anything of importance in the 40k universe.
How to say you're a secondary, who doesn't even own an army, without directly saying it.
See, how relevant >your guys
are on a setting-wide level, is basically irrelevant.
You don't play in >the 40k universe
as a whole
You play in whatever corner of it your guys come from/are going to, and the relevance of *your guys* is absolute, in games starring *your guys*.
And remember; being the guy who has to bring some overpriced lore character bristling with dubious special rules, to every game, is profoundly lame, and showcases a lack of imagination.
>Play your own mini-campaigns that become canonical for your and your friends armies >Write battle honors from games on unit standards >Use Rogue Trader era home rules, embrace Rubber-Crocodile-Core
I have never read a Horus Heresy novel in my life, and I never intend to.
>How did the Death Korps get so popular anyway?
The breakout event in-lore that made the Krieg so enormously popular was Vraks. While it's true that the Krieg were always going to be popular due to the Great War Germany aesthetic, it's due to their heavy involvement during the Siege of Vraks that gave people something to point at and admire. It's like how Cadia might've been just another regiment if the Black Crusades didn't hinge on the Cadian Gate.
Warhammer 40k sells itself on war and general edginess and the Krieg are all about war and edginess. And they aren't space marines so naturally hipster underdog lover mindset'd people gravitate towards them.
I know it's bait but the whole >Only NAZIS like Krieg
Doesn't really pass muster when the lowest grade Krieg memes are either shovel autism spam or variants of WW1 memes about shotguns.
Is their lore still being an indispensable and favored unit of the Guards? Any general who absolutely must hold a line or must go charge into certain death without faltering goes immediately to the Krieg regiment?
It also helped that the Death Korps were the stars of a big sexy Forge World campaign book back in the days when Forge World consistently knocked it out of the park, so there was loads of fantastic art and miniature photography of them floating around.
Siege of Vraks was pure kino. Death Korps fluff was expanded upon from the IG codex and WD entries, and a genuinely interesting story was the result. The models at that time were also impressive. Since then however, DKoK have been flanderized to hell and have become the refuge for Wehraboo creeps who paint them up in SS Splittertarnmuster... despite the fact that they resemble a mixture of Imperial German Heer and French army circa WW1.
>HECKIN SHOVELERINOS THEY NEED THE COMMISSARS TO HOLD THEM BACK
>It's not like they've done anything of importance in the 40k universe.
That’s literally why they’re appealing, you fricking dipshit.
This statement is actually really depressing because it hints at the utter state of the fanbase in the modern era. Why does something have to be natively important to be interesting? It’s flat-brain marvel capeshit / WWE meathead thinking and it’s the reason the entire GW hobby is creatively bankrupt - because you mongs are clapping like seals while they spoonfeed you this soap opera diarrhoea and empty your wallets for the privilege.
They have a fun aesthetic and they're the best at what the Imperium does.
I hate you
I don't think about you at all.

Like 90% yeah. The other 10% is forced YouTube memes.
they look cool
that is not in fact the whole reason
maybe 50% though.
No that's Armageddon. Death Korp are for those that love the misery of WWI Aesthetic.
You think wehraboos are smart enough to know the difference? They see something resembling a stahlhelm and cream themselves.
What's up with the wokie samegayging? Twitter is that way.

So? Still objectively better than a ragebait thread about black people in Warhammer, or whatever else /misc/ collectively shit their pants about.

Irrelevant.

Back to the slop thread, homosexual.
Great aesthetic and a back story that appeals to the setting.
Nazis. I know that they don't look like nazis, but nazis are some of the stupidest people on the planet, so they don't realise that.

For ages they were the only non-Cadians to get decent models, though whether that was originally cause or effect is arguable.
I like krieg because I have a gas mask fetish tbh

could you space that any more reddit?
Death korps of krieg are made to appeal to virgins
Vostroyan firstborn is where the chads go to.
>Mordians, Steel Legion, Vostroyans, Valhallans, Tallarn are all discontinued
Why did Cadians have to become the default Imperial Guard sub-faction?
Because paying for resin or metal for your basic troops in a horde army is hard to love.
I love Armageddon Steel Legion though, ironically.

There's just a lot of them and they are good at sieges.

The entirety of 40k's appeal begins with visual aesthetics, dumbass. No one has to "do anything of importance", they just fricking look cool.
