The idea that prostitutes will frick anybody is wrong. Many of them are picky, especially The high class ones. Sephiroth's trolling feeds his psychosis over his fake identity, culminating with losing Aerith. It sends him into a suicidal death-spiral that ends with him taking a dip in the Lifestream and going full who-am-i? zombie-mode.
Power of friendship eventually helps him put the pieces back together and he decides to start a new life in the here and now with the people he knows and has forged relationships with in the present. After defeating Jenova / Seipher Sephiroth in the crater, he closes the book on his old broken self represented by a mental battle between him and his old memories represented by the ghost of Sephiroth-past. A battle you can't lose and has to end in a cinematic Omnislash limit break.

I think Sepheroth is “helping” Cloud by making him stay avoid the normal timeline because he fricking dies in the normal timeline. I’m sure the next games will piss all the good ideas away but Sepheroth manipulating Cloud is nothing new.
