Well, the original concept from Mikami was pretty fricking unhinged before Iwao was brought in and changed everything to what we now have. Originally Mikami didn't even want a story and he wanted the game to be about cyborgs fighting ghosts. And from what we've seen from the super early RE4 videos, he tried making RE about ghosts again.
