It was foreshadowed but still a surprise. The whole game is meant to be a metaphor for dreams so I’m assuming that the ending relates to waking up and having to go back to reality. I think that “fake memories” with no precedent are a bit contrived but I still enjoyed it. Phenomenal game overall, though I never played the sequel

      >The whole game is meant to be a metaphor for dreams so I’m assuming that the ending relates to waking up and having to go back to reality
That is correct, as you are Klonoa. He is your clone-oa. And just like you leave when you're done with the game, he also has to leave once he's done in the dream world.

That is correct, as you are Klonoa. He is your clone-oa. And just like you leave when you're done with the game, he also has to leave once he's done in the dream world.

Is that the reason why Klonoa never mentions anything that happened from the first game during the events of Klonoa 2? He never mentioned he is from Breezegale in 2.

        Anonymous

Well that's because he isn't from Breezegale. Also while it's never directly said there's so many underlying ties to DtP in LV's story that I'm pretty sure he remembers the events in some form.

Though there's nothing outright, Hyuponia's track has numerous callbacks to significant moments from Door to Phantomile.

That along with the fact that the kingdom's very name sounds like Huepow's name and the King of Sorrow's appearance looking vaguely similar to Klonoa's Door to Phantomile design in parts has led some to theorize that the whole thing is the manifestation of Klonoa's repressed grief and sorrow after the events of Door to Phantomile.

I think the ending is a bit overrated, I played it for first time last week and despite felling a bit sad. I believe the ending would have been more impactful if there wasn't an Extra level for 100% reward with its own story and if Klonoa died/vanished instead of being sent to his world and series didn't have any other sequels
    That's my opinion

it's just meant to represent the player waking up from a dream he doesn't want to end, no need to make it edgy for no reason

        Anonymous

Nah, don't want him dying for shock value. I mean I would enjoy it more if the twist was that he's not real so he never existed and it also becomes revealed that none of the characters you interacted were aware of him, they were always talking to Huepow and saw him as the hero who did everything. So once Klonoa's mission was accomplished, he vanishes, like a dream
I also forgot to mention that what I love the most was that despite everything, Klonoa still forgives Huepow

The worlds in klonoa exist. but Klonoa does not really exist in those worlds or isn't supposed to.
Klonoa can only travel to these worlds via his dreams hence the title Dream Traveler.

Klonoa is really a proxy and representation for you the player in the dream world.

they don't go into what happens when klonoa wakes up from a dream. There's non-canon spin off games where everything gets mixed together and klonoa resides in his breezegale house.
the "good morning" screen at the end of Klonoa 2 pretty much suggests he's you tho.

I don't want Klonoa to be me bros... I'm too depress with my disappointing life to imagine Klonoa being me.

I'm very knowledge on the wii version. it wasn't perfect but a lot of it was quite well made.
Basically Nahatom is meant to have more texture details there are also these secondary textures called normal maps which define how light hits an object to give the impression of a more detailed surface, see pic.
Normal mapping is almost entirely broken for every part in the klonoa 1 port.

At least it was still Namco in-house, even if by that time a lot of the talent from the 90's had scattered elsewhere. That's why the Wii release was reviewed as "Good for a younger audience I guess"

That wood texture was never meant to repeat horizontally. in the wii version the book is placed on the table in a circle of light and everything around it is occluded by darkness so the texture never extends beyond that. it looks good. but because they broke shading and shadows in the port there is no darkness. they just misaligned the same textures and repeated it.

That's what you fricking want from a remake. The exact same game as it was 20 years ago, but running at a higher resolution, framerate and available on modern platforms. This isn't a REBOOT where people accept that developers take artistic liberties. This is a fricking remake, so do it properly or not at all.

Everything in 1 feels really weird because the world and enemies are the same scale but Klonoa is tiny at half the size yet still has almost the same movement properties. Windbullets however are scaled down with klonoa so your range is about half that of the wii version.

tough i do admit it is a difficulty spike, Klonoa 2 is harder overall but he difficulty is more spread out

After finishing Klonoa 1 remaster, I can say that it was easier for me to get the 150 gems compared to the original on PS1. I had no problems with the control, I don't know how it will apply to this with 2.

Is the ending supposed to be a meta thing? Like Klonoa is a video game protagonist so now that the game (dream) is over he has to leave to wait for his next adventure. Is Diva who sings the song of rebirth then a literal reset button and her "song" is a PS1 startup jingle?

You are Klonoa. He is your avatar in that dream world. Your clone-oa. Just like you leave the game when the game is over, so does Klonoa.

It's supposed to be a dream the player wakes up from.

Yeah, I kinda felt that was the case. The ending was probably a huge mindfrick for kids who played it back in the day before meta stories became relatively common in video games.

When Huepow said I'm sorry, he wasn't apologizing to Klonoa. He was apologizing to Jiji for getting him involved like that.

It takes the entire twist of "it's just a dream" and makes it an actual concept
Klonoa travels through dreams to help others that summon him, he's called "Klonoa of the Wind" because he constantly travels without a real home to call his own, 1 has him young and naive enough to be manipulated by Hupoe but 2 legit ends with him accepting that he has to leave and can't stay with Lolo

      This absolutely doesn't mean that.
I wouldn't say these broken ports that are worse in every way than the originals are good enough either. especially for Klonoa standards.
Just releasing the original games without them fricking up the game code and art direction would have been far preferable. It's the lack of care that is a really bad sign and means we probably wont get a klonoa 3.

you underestimate how much work it's going to be to be to unfrick this.
movement code, animations, textures, lighting, model replacement. re-implementing 3D moving mouths on the models instead of the cheap 2D ones.
you need to create a proper shader preloading system to resolve the shader compilation stutter they added.
if you can decompile the source code using unity decomp methods so we have access to whole unity project then I'll help with development. but that will be hard.

Access to a Klonoa 2 source code would be amazing so we could make a PC port like Jak and daxter. but the port has been so thoroughly defaced I'd prefer the original PS2 source code just because there wouldn't be a mountain of things to fix..

      maybe, maybe not

i say keep your expectations realistic, BAMCO also released Katamari Damacy REROLL, the game has almost 3000 reviews on steam, so im gonna assume it sold well, by comparison Klonoa only has 442 reviews so far, both games have a very positive reception too

and yet, there has been no new Katamari Damacy games or announcements since then, not even a remake of the sequels

So was Klonoa's appearance also meant to be fake in the original game? Grandpa and the villagers look like him though. So it's either them who were changed to look like Klonoa or Klonoa was changed to look like them.

      Anonymous

I've been wondering about this for years. KoS and presumably the rest of his race also kinda look like Klonoa, so maybe cabbits are common across the dream-multiverse or whatever.

IRL reason for this is probably that Klonoa's appearance was meant to be fake / changed to fit the world he was sent to but then they had to make more games. There was no way they were going to scrap the character design, so it was just kinda left as a plot hole.

Considering the masculine form given to me by Providence I must only be focused on dominating others, therefore I would be more interested in the butthole of any other given person(s) than their penis, for the penis is meant for one to dominate others and as I am built for dominating others the only penis that should matter to me would be my own and not any one else's.

Not sure why everyone is replying to this, but was he still at Namco for the Wii Remake?. People forget about all the dumb shit they tried to pull with the Wii version, and that was in-house. They tried to change the overrall character for the worse, which people tevolted against. And then they gave everyone voiced lines and Klonoa sounds like a saturday morning cartoon character with Sonic 'tude.

If this remake actually had more heart and polish i'd be more receptive to them going ahead with a sequel. But part of me yhinks that Klonoa is a franchise that is best served by indie devs making their own Klonoa-like and mogging whatever Bamco could do because they clearly don't give a shit beyond milking the good will and have since 2009.

It was incomprehensibly confusing because the game opens up with Klonoa living in his house in a village full of creatures that look exactly like him and he has a grandpa. Hyupo bought real estate, tampered with Klonoa's memories to make him think that real estate belong to him, dressed Klonoa pajamas, dumped Klonoa in that bed, went back up to the moon kingdom in the sky, divebombed into the forest to get Klonoa's attention, and convinced an old man to play along with the deception up said old man's dying breaths?

      Anonymous

Interesting thing about Grandpa: He actually didn't stay dead after the events of Door to Phantomile, or at least wasn't originally meant to. A few years ago Yoshizawa posted the storyboards to the ending FMV revealing it was meant to go on a bit longer, having more scenes of the world being revived. One of these scenes shows Grandpa waking up in a sort of coffin. This was cut for time constraints though, and also Yoshizawa deleted the tweet so unfortunately I can't find it anymore. Maybe it's in the art book they made for this release.

Technically I did see Klonoa for the Wii on a shelf in 2008 but because it looked like another generic shovelware title, I ignored it
Then around late 2013 I actually opened a Klonoa thread and then bought the PS1 version on my Vita and played through it and fell in love with the series and bought Lunatea's Veil for PS2 in 2015 and played EoD on my sister's Wii U

      oh my own really

back in my country there were stores selling pirated games at obviously lower prices than original ones, back then i dont know how to pirate so we went there often

i dont remember if it was me or one of my siblings the one who picked up the game, but yeah, we got it, i played it, and got to the fricking ending

i remember finishing it shortly before we went on vacation to visit some relatives, i was consistently thinking about that ending while i was away from home

Man, I miss going to flea markets, best place to get rare-ish games for cheap. There was a big one I used to go to all the time back when I used to live in Texas. Unfortunately they tore it down for a private park.

        >It'll make more sense as you keep playing. Later parts of the game are kinda spoilery, especially for the second game.

I rented and beat Klonoa 2 from Blockbuster in 2001 and beat it in a weekend. I remember the game and its levels, however, the actual story/setting is a total mystery to me. Something bad guys.

      >when did you first learn about Klonoa anons?

Playstation demo disc that I played over and over again. It had the first level and boss.

I feel weird/sad that everyone in this thread started with the Wii version a decade later.

It's gonna be weird seeing Ganker talk about how they were big long tiem fans of Klonoa and how they started on this remake.

Years ago back in I think 4th grade when my brother and I got Gameboy Advances for Christmas. Mine came with Dr Mario and my brother's came with Empire of Dreams. Our mom just picked out two random GBA games she saw at Costco and put one in each of our presents.

Mom bought 1 for me when I was 6 as just a random thing she thought I'd like back when it was released. Then I played 2 when it came out. Good times. 2 has better story and characters, but I wish it was harder.

I wish his Door to Phantomile model in Phantasy Reverie looked a bit more like this. Hugely grateful they even bothered recreating his original design instead of just porting the Wii version, especially since said design is finally getting the spotlight again (Almost every time they acknowledged Klonoa's original design prior to this it looked more like the Moonlight Museum one) but the model itself is noticeably off in parts. The new 2D art is great though (Even if the linework is a bit iffy)

That table texture will most likely be fixed in a patch but apart from that I don't see MonkeyCraft doing things like adding back the moon kingdom crescent statues and other things, nor do I expect people to mod that shit back in.

They're decent stories. The format of the levels is for more puzzle platforming than anything due to GBA limitations. It might not be something you like.

Klonoa Heroes, however, is an action RPG if that's more your thing than puzzle platforming. It's got some character building with some new characters along with some old ones, and shows how Klonoa acts in his own Phantomile.

      Anonymous

They're simple but fun games. They kinda follow up on the whole dream walker aspect, but also kinda sorta follow their own continuity. Heroes isn't a platformer though, it's kinda sorta like Zelda or Mana, so there's that if you wanna have something a little different.

I guess Namco worlds really are just dream worlds. It explains why Klonoa somehow makes cameo appearances in virtually every game in their catalog. He just ends up in those Namco Worlds sometimes because he took the wrong Somnium Leap.

I'm glad to finally be able to play it handheld
But why's there so many aesthetic failures? The water in Jungle Slider. The vortexes the enemies appear from (darker). The "vision cleared" effect is just awful. The bosses' bright glare upon defeat is gone.

      then play it yourself
you can beat the game in 4 hours, tops
it plays out like a bedtime story, and so it fulfills that role of a short story when you can beat it in an afternoon, or even finishing it in the evening before bed as a proper bedtime story

i think It runs off your console/computer's selected language. My Japanese copy switched to English when I started playing.

I think that only happens with the Japanese version because the demo switched to english as well although my switch isn't on english :/

My PS4 version downloaded a day 1 patch of about 1 GB, so that was probably the language packs they forgot.

Is it just nostalgia or is Klonoa PS1 somethign magical? It just brings up something. Gameplay wise it reminds me of Tomba of course but it doesn't have the same feel.

A lot of PS1 games had this Arcadey feel that was very nostalgic even back then, from the bombastic sound effects to the clear effort to maximise what the system can do. By contrast all these ports and remasters have had the love essentially scrubbed out. They just increase the poly count, throw a bunch of shaders over them and call it a day. It's also a distinct misunderstanding of what people want that has existed for a long time. The Wii version epitomized this by setting the voices to English by default. Like who the frick wanted that.

Maybe it's that everyone that plays it feels some kind of loss.
The original PS1 players felt loss from the ending.
The ones that played it later using the remaster or emulators also feel loss from missing out on such a good game.
And of course, Klonoa is the biggest loser of all. Being subject to Bamco's whims, and lack of existing as a series without a proper conclusion for his story.

In addition, for atmosphere the game has a kind of somber feel. It's cute and relaxing at first, but you get some odd sense of loss?

its one of the few games that feel like a actual dream, the remakes are decent but they dont give off the same atmosphere as the originals which im pretty sure the reason being the lighting and things like that.

It's clearly inspired by Kirby's "dreamland", however Kirby barely does anything with the premise. Klonoa takes it seriously and incorporates it into the twist.

Did you learn nothing from Klonoa? All things are temporary, just enjoy it while it lasts.
